FiddySicks
Houston still isn't in the clear, though. This kinda reminds me of game 4 vs the Yankees. That pen could still blow it. masterchaoss
Well Houston is pretty lucky the Dodgers just set the record for missing on pitches middle middle. I don't see this happening again and I fully expect this series to go back to LA. Kershaw is GOD! Kershaw is LIFE! Kershaw is ALL!

Quillz
Love my Dodgers, but this might be it. Houston probably gonna take it in 5.
FiddySicks
Gurriel suspended FIVE games for racial remarks. Five games in 2018, that is. That seems fair. What he did was dumb and really insensitive, and losing five game checks I think should be a pretty good lesson. I can see why this would make some upset, but suspending him during the World Series would've been too much of a story that MLB didn't want to deal with right now. Also, there's no way it would've held up with the union fighting it. On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) DEAD!
I disagree. It SHOULD NOT matter WHEN you make such gestures. A good lesson would have been suspending him in the World Series. Sure, the union would probably fight it and maybe a pending suspension would have been delayed until next season anyways, but at least the MLB would have looked proactive on this particular race issue. I saw, I came, I left.
Lights Out
Can't say I'm surprised that Gurriel wasn't suspended in this series. They didn't do it when Roberto Alomar spat on John Hirschbeck, so they're not going to do it now. Also, wouldn't Gurriel be able to just appeal the suspension anyway and still get to play? The_Admiral
Yeah, even if you suspended him right now, it would be held in abeyance until he could get a hearing. Though you figure with enough people from the commissioner's office in town for the Series, they could have the meeting on the road... EDIT: this creates an interesting liberal double-bind as it puts people between racial taunting being wrong (it is) and the collectively bargained rights of a labor union (they're good). ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
FiddySicks
Yeah this is kind of a tough one, and I find myself feeling pretty ambivalent about it. On one hand, you never wanna see someone do something like that. It's wrong, insensitive, and it sends a really bad message to the public. We already have enough of that crap in today's world. But do you really want to suspend a guy from a World Series game for that when the implications reach so far and effect so many different people? Every once in awhile I have those moments where I begin to question just exactly how I feel about certain topics, and this feels like one of them. I feel like I should be a bit more disgusted that they didn't levy a harsher punishment, but I also feel like I would've been more outraged if they had. I'm almost kind of embarrassed to admit that. The_Admiral
I think the correct thing to do would have been to suspend him immediately and make Gurriel and the union appeal the suspension immediately. That way everyone can go through the whole gavotte we always go through instead of acknowledging that Gurriel screwed up badly but not so badly that he should be punished while the stakes are highest. Now he'll probably appeal the deferred suspension anyway and still get it knocked down from like five games to three, which will also make people angry (unless there's a provision in the CBA that agreeing to the deferment of a suspension like this waives one's right to an appeal; I waste a lot of time reading stupid crap but even I haven't memorized each league's collective bargaining agreement). ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Given the events in the world, it can be pretty tiring to hear what the latest thing Trump said, or what the Nazis are doing. But, for a league and a sport that dedicates a day celebrating the colour barrier, and yet be rather weak on this doesn't sit quite well on me. For all the rightful anger by Hispanic and black people about how they are treated, to have a former NBA player who is black comment about an Asian player's hairstyle and a Cuban baseball player mocking an appearance of an Asian player probably shows no matter how much we have progressed as a society, we still have persistent in appropriately respecting other cultures. Lights Out
Pretty gross that Gurriel just got a standing ovation. Not sure if I want the Astros to win anymore. POTD: 2/4/12 3/4/

Quillz
A lot of the talking heads were predicting a 6-7 game series. Maybe they'll be right... If the Dodgers do hold on to win, that makes the series 2-2 and basically the World Series becomes a best-of-3. Interesting. (Which, by the way, is the format I think the wild card game ought to be). FiddySicks
Even though I most certainly have a rooting interest, and tonight didn't go my way, this has been an EXCELLENT series. One of the best I can remember in a good while. On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.)
