22-23 NBA Season Thread

Somehow I didn't know anything bad about Karl Malone.  Just read about impregnating a 13 year old, then settling a suit so that he would not have to publicly acknowledge twins that he had with some other girl (actually the twins came first, the statutory rape came second) . At least both he and that girl were both 17, but when he fathered a 13 year-old's child, he was 20.  That's not simply a "matter that has settled".  I don't think it's virtue signaling to call that  despicable.  Lots of players get praised or get the benefit of the doubt after doing despicable acts, but IDK... being a 20-year-old college student and getting a 13-year-old pregnant demonstrates not only multiple occurrences of bad judgement, but is flat-out sick.

Man - I loved Stockton and Malone, but knowing what I know now about both of them, I'm really glad they're not immortalized in NBA championship lore.

Karl Malone walked so Herschel Walker could run (directly into a brick wall, multiple times over)

Malone has a daughter, Cheryl Ford, who played in the WNBA, and the only reason he seemed to even acknowledge her was that the NBA acted like he was responsible for her talent. Which outside of the initial event, he was not around to help her become a league champion.  He seems to be much closer to his children he had later in life, but he all but abandoned Cheryl and her brother right after they were born.

Philly got a championship!

A slam dunk championship. Congrats to Mac McClung.

Literally nobody has any idea who that even is.

He acknowledged in 2008 it’s too late for them to have a real father son relationship, but has had a relationship with him since 2014. So once again what’s the big deal? There are plenty of dead beat fathers out there.

Sooo the outrage is actually about Karl Malone r*ping a 12 year old girl.

McClung was on fire but Murphy had great dunks too. In next year give me McClung, Gordon, LaVine and Morant/Toppin.

On the other hand I gave Skills Challenge second chance but no, this new formula is still too chaotic and I still don't like it. Please NBA bring back original one.

I've been waiting for Mac McClung to have an NBA moment. And this counts!

I also really like that Jae'Sean Tate was throwing passes to Kenyon Martin Jr. for his first attempt. They're teammates now and they're dads were college teammates at Cincinnati.

Also, yes, the Dunk Contest has been meh the past year or two, but every year that happens people want to shut the whole event down, because god forbid we don't have a take on everything that happens, even if we don't really watch it. This was a good dunk contest! And they'll continue to happen before, after, and around bad ones. We didn't shut the Super Bowl down after the 49ers beat the broncos 55-10 or the Seahawks beat the Broncos 43-8 (unintended Broncos pile on, yeah!). It's fine. Sometimes events are duds, and it doesn't have to be this big statement because we have nothing better to do.

I almost passed on watching the dunk contest this year; I’m glad I decided to keep watching! McClung’s dunks had me out of my seat. The dunk contest needed that badly.

Also, a very cool moment with Dame winning the 3-pt Contest here wearing a Weber State uniform. He’s the greatest player to ever come out of a Utah school and definitely beloved here (I’ve attended two Blazers/Jazz games in SLC, and both times he got a near standing ovation when introduced in the lineup), and he’s always shown a lot of love right back to the state. I was rooting for Markkanen of course, but Dame winning here was the next best thing from a Jazz fan perspective, and I was really happy to see him do it.

Is he the first guy to compete in a dunk contest without actually having played for the team he's representing?  I just looked up his stats, and he hasn't even played in an NBA game this year (and only two in his life... one for each of two teams!)

Might be a deep pull, but you have to forgive McClung for not getting too much PT, since he's got a second career as lead singer of Future Islands.

I think Cassius Stanley in 2021 was in the G-League at the time of his participation. I know he played around 20 NBA games that year, but I can't remember if they were before or after the contest.

This live picking is...not as good as when they did it on television.

Also, what's going on with the audio?

Westbrook to the Clips.

Good luck to everyone involved!

Adam Silver foaming at mouth right now over the potential of a Lakers/Clippers or Suns/Mavs playoff series (or both!).

This move makes sense for Westbrook, but not for the Clippers. He gets to stay in his hometown of LA, and he gets to play with his former teammate and buddy Paul George. The Clippers get a non-shooting, poor desicion-making, ball-dominant player who's past his prime. The same issues with his fit with the Lakers will apply across the hall.

On the one hand, the Lakers gave up on Zubac and he's excelled with the Clips. On the other hand, that was really stupid by Magic and everyone knew it immediately.

Westbrook's last great moment was dragging the Wizards to the playoffs, and he deserves a lot of credit for that.

But it just feels like fundamentally, if you can't play with LeBron and AD, who can you play with? They gave him every opportunity to succeed, and he kind of literally threw it away.

Westbrook is a high motor guy and will always keep up energy on the court. But he can't shoot, I don't recall him defending particularly well, and his passing has gotten worse.

It's completely possible Kawhi and Paul George and Ty Lue get more out of him than the Lakers could. Maybe they'll prove everyone wrong. It's just that it feels like that's what we've heard about Russ ever since he left OKC and he is who he is now.
