NFL 2023 Changes

Count me among those that wants creamsicles full-time for the Bucs. Vibrant colors, gorgeous shades, much better than the dull red and gray mess they've worn since. The cannonball looks (both Super Bowl sets) suffer from major dullness syndrome. The pewter pants are dull, the pewter helmets are dull, the dark red is dull, the black socks are dull. Vibrancy is in - capitalize on that.

Big fan of the Bucs creamsicles but not sure I’d like to see them full time. I like their regular uniforms but they need to tone down the pewter pants about 3 or 4 shades lighter, if they must stick with the matte material and can’t get metallic. I’m sure they could get metallic, but it seems like 98% of the teams in NFL and college opt against it due to the lightweight material and breathability. Only ones I can think of are the Raiders, Cowboys, and Kansas State.

Nope, I'm right there with you. I never liked the seasonal affective disorder 49ers to begin with, but the fact that Nike refuses to replicate metallic pewter pants and leaves them instead with warm grey makes it irredeemable.

Another problem: what is their home uniform? Is it:

pewter/red/grey/black,

pewter/red/white/black,

pewter/white/grey/black,

pewter/white/white/black?

And that's not even mentioning the ill-conceived warm grey jersey or the tendency to wear snowflake-emoji white socks. You have a good chance of seeing any of these combinations in Tampa. I know every team's identity is a complete mess right now, but that's been a problem with this set going back to the days when the whole league didn't have that problem. A creamsicle set would be comparatively idiotproofed.

Changing to the creamsicles isn't going to stop them from mixing and matching what they wear at home. O/O/W, O/W/W, O/O/O, W/W/W etc

The new Cardinals away set is filling a very specific niche in the uniform world: the mono white / red centric uniform.

While there are multiple other mono white uniforms (white helmet, jersey, pants) in the League, all of those other teams are blue or teal (Colts, Bills, Dolphins, Chargers and alts for Browns and Cowboys)

Something about this is scratching an itch for me:

Now the Cardinals previous set was also white over white with a white lid but with the red shoulders, it felt different from this set.

I like the new set much better.

The Creamsicles are perfect in their current form, as a charming switch-up throwback look.

I also think that yesterday was the best that those uniforms have ever looked, the modern matte materials really enhance the colors and help them pop more than they ever have.

Agree on all.  Once, maybe even twice per year is perfect.

I get the nostalgia aspect of the navy helmet, but I just don't see how a mismatched helmet versus jersey is a better look. Give me this anytime.

This is a great look.  Love it.

But I also really love the Navy helmet, because that’s how it was and how I remember it, and that’s why it works.  I was instantly taken back to Lawrence Taylor, Carl Banks, Dave Meggett, Mark Bavaro and Bill Parcells in his Giants sweater and playing Tecmo Bowl as a kid.

The whole point of wearing throwbacks is the nostalgia, guys…not to fix them.

It’s the best they’ve ever looked.

Once they start wearing White/Red/White/Red and win a few games, people are going to rave about them.

There's a member that was in the equipment business and explained the whole blue-colored helmet thing in great detail at some point.  Can't recall the username.

I’d imagine we’re overthinking it.  Probably a “that’s what it’s always been” deal, if I had to take a guess.  To me, it worked.

This is where I'm at. I think the novelty of the creamsicles would wear very quickly if they were an every game look. One thing I've always liked about the 97 rebrand is it kept the creamsicle colors so they didn't completely throw away the DNA of the franchise - It added contrast and gave it a cannonball like feel with the black and pewter.

The solution is keep the creamsicles as an alternate, but stick with the sturdier red and pewter with metallic pants and go back to using the superior 1997 logos for the 16 other games.

I think you yourself had a good idea with your Bucco Bruce redraw that introduced burgundy as an accent color for the traditional creamsicle orange and red. Gives it a little more contrast without resorting to black, or worse, shoehorning in pewter.

Also, looking back at KU's old uniforms in particular, I still don't see how the Giants couldn't make it work until 2000.

Probably because they looked at these and said, “No, we’re good.”

I've long thought that the Bucs could please everyone by simply swapping the prominence of orange and red in their current color scheme. In other words, orange and pewter with red trim instead of red and pewter with orange trim.

Never thought of this. Someone please make a concept of this ASAP (I have zero photoshop skills)

You need a darker color than red as the base otherwise the colors are just too close to one another. I'm not going to go through the trouble of doing a uniform concept, but I'd keep everything the same with orange as the dominant color and change all the red to a medium darkness purpleish burgundy.

The Creamsicles might be the only entry in a rare category of uniforms that are a thing of beauty but also don't belong on a football field.

I'm never one for the macho notion that uniforms need to look tough, but I was reading a news story from 1996 in which Trent Dilfer said something to the effect of his linemen looking and feeling inferior in wearing those uniforms playing such a tough and aggressive game. From that perspective, I can kinda see it. It makes you wonder whether the uniforms didn't contribute to those years of being a laughingstock.

I suspect being a laughingstock had more to do with being owned by Hugh Culverhouse. Other teams could have dressed in hot pink and called themselves the Unicorns, and they would still have run roughshod over Tampa.

I understand why Bucs fans might not be crazy about the idea of  full time return to the bright orange, but am I the only one that has kind of soured on the current version of the pewter/red uniform?  I dunno, back in the early 2000's Tampa's original go-round  with this look was IMO about as perfect as an NFL uniform gets, but the new version is just kind... meh. I'm not entirely sure why, but Nike's absolutely terrible version of the pewter pants has a lot to do with it, I think.  The dark charcoal looks bad with the red jersey, but red over white is just bland. And the terminator skull will always be vastly inferior to the original pirate scrawled version of the logo.

Like the rest of us, when they dumped the alarm clock numbers and the mess that went with them for this "return" uniform, I was pretty pumped, but as time as gone by with it, I'm getting pretty underwhelmed. Nike's inability to get certain colors right can definitely cause issues.

This is a perfectly fair point. The current look is a cheap imitation of the first Super Bowl look, but I’m totally fine with that because the uniform set they won their first Super Bowl in is my favorite sports uniform of all time. Even a downgraded version of that is still better than the original 70s look that they were awful in, or the entire alarm clock disaster.

My biggest gripe with the Bucs is that they “modernized” their flag and ship logos. The original flag is just a perfect logo, and again is the reason I’m as big of a Bucs fan as I am, and the reason why I’ve wasted so much of my life on this weird sports logos “hobby”. Both of the “upgraded” logos are enormous downgrades from the original, and is the one thing that was kept from the disastrous alarm clock era,  from which everything should’ve been incinerated and then stomped and spat on.

I'll be honest, I never even realized there was a difference. The original does look cleaner without all the silver/grey shoehorned in.
