NFL 2023 Changes

I’m not from Texas, not a Texans fan, not into lowriders, etc. - but I like the candy finish and, even if I didn’t, don’t see how something so shiny is all that bad. I’ve disliked matte helmets since I first saw them and, while satin finish works for the Vikings and Falcons, it’s too dull for most teams. Candy gives another way for a helmet to be colorful, besides basic gloss and metal-flake. I’d like to see more teams experiment with it - and if that means a slight shade adjustment to make it work better with the jersey, that’s fine.

Honestly, with how Nike has been jamming whiteout, blackout, Color Rash, matte helmets, monochrome, etc., down our throats, I would think a little more color would be welcomed.

Am I missing something or did this thread immediately turn into a giant whine fest because one poster mentioned the candy red paint on the Texans helmets reminding him (...or her...) of slabs in a positive light and since slabs apparently now equate to lowriders which now equates on a 1 to 1 basis to "rap culture" then the whole thing is bad and deserves immediate and overt derision?

Yes, I think you’re missing something.  I didn’t see a post mentioning “rap culture” as bad and deserving of derision.

“I suppose that's part of the urban culture, too, but like custom low riders, I don't think that's something you brand a professional sports team after.  Be better, Houston.“

And then we straight up have a guy saying they are pandering to blacks.

what year is this thread?

We’ll, neither of those quotes are mine, so I don’t want to speak for them, but to my mind, saying it isn’t something you’d want to build a professional sports brand around isn’t the same as saying it’s bad and deserving of derision.

As for the Admiral’s ultimate point… it’s kind of just one of his usual points.

I said what I meant and I meant what I said. We clocked what they were going for weeks ago with the Old English lettering, and not only is "urban streetwear" a bad fit for the brand and a misstep for a team whose league should be above trend-chasing, it's also tacky coming from an organization whose opinions on enthusiasts of "urban streetwear" are pretty clear. No apologies.

It’s not a trend it’s a large part of the cities culture for over 30 years.

I am always surprised when people here say they like the red helmet. I think people perhaps just like the idea of more red helmets in the league. Heck, I am on board with that.

But in practice it just did not work for the Texans. Maybe it would work with a flatter finish, but to me it clashes very hard with the red jersey. Could possibly work with the blue jerseys?

Red helmets and navy blue jerseys for the win!

It's funny, when I think of Texas, I never consider street culture. But I guess every large city has an urban side of it.

The Geto Boys were reppin H-Town in the late '80s.

East side, maybe. Or the rich white kids in West U or Memorial who act like what they think the fifth ward is and pretend to listen to the Houston rap scene (but really just Travis Scott). Houston is really odd in that if you were to ask 20 people from across town (including suburbs who say they’re from Houston) what “Houston Culture” is, you’d get about 20 answers. Montrose is different from is different from rice village (okay maybe those two are kinda similar) is different from bellaire is different from magnolia park is different from third ward and so on. Keep in mind that the most rabid Texans fans sure as hell aren’t in the loop, or even beltway 8. Admittedly, that’s because their branding and marketing mostly goes out towards the whiter suburbs, and it probably helped them secure places like spring/the woodlands/Conroe/Sugar Land/Pearland/Missouri City/etc. by having a “great white hope” as their largest spokesperson (nothing against Watt btw, seriously a great dude and did a LOT across Houston during his time here). The pivot towards communities inside of Houston proper just seems insincere, is all.

Also, the Texans would look SOOOO much better with a white facemask.

First of all, thanks to @Htown1141 for the breakdown of internal Houston fandom. Any big city is going to be weird in its own way so its good to get the insider perspective.

Secondly, a lot of teams have a shift from helmet finish to jersey. Take a look at the Eagles.

It's just something that we've seen for a while so it's no quite so jarring, though I know I'm about to get a half dozen Philly fans pining for the old satin topped jerseys.

The fabric/helmet mismatch wouldn't be so jarring if they wore kelly green instead of a desaturated '90s interior design swatch.

I honestly would not mind a Texans version of this. The fade to blue I could live without (but I don’t hate it, either), but the red satin finish is actually great.

I wanted the Bills to wear red helmets and pants with blue jerseys and socks and people told me it was a terrible idea. I thought it would have looked okay, though.

Houston should be wearing this full time if they want to use more red:

*note the bonus use of the correct socks with the blue pants

Something about the red helmet just feels off to me. I don’t like the finish, it’s too orangey but besides that, it’s just doesn’t look right to me for reasons I can’t really articulate.
