2023 season is over. Starting up the offseason thread.

Padres Reportedly Needed a Cash Loan in September Amid Payroll Issues

https://www.si.com/mlb/padres/news/padres-reportedly-needed-a-cash-loan-in-september-amid-payroll-issues

"The big hit for the organization came early in the season as the television broadcast partner, Bally Sports and its parent company Diamond Sports, filed for bankruptcy in March."

This seems relevant.

Anyway, I wonder how likely the Red Sox are to go on a panic signing spree a la 2014-15. The general consensus seems to be that the team's Q rating is fading fast up there. The time seems right for one of those flailing-around, Hanley/Sandoval/two washed-up starters type of offseasons.

Among those teams?  It's either the Padres, Mariners or Rays, with the slight edge going to the Rays.  The Rays have been to the World Series twice like the Rangers did before this last appearance.  Now what will be interesting is what happens if they go back to the World Series, they are up 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2 in the series and have a chance to win the title at home.  If there is that type of game for the Rays, how many people will show up for that?  If that same situation was to happen for the Brewers, Mariners, Rockies or Padres, those stadiums would sell out and be loud.

Cold af on all sides, but it totally makes sense. Mark Jackson to Steve Kerr kinda move. Feel sick for Ross, and for Brewers fans, but it’s probably the right move.

Indeed it is...we need a manager who can take us back to the Fall Classic, and I don't think Craig is that manager.

Jason Benetti goes from White Sox PXP man to Tigers PXP man

As someone who can only listen to their team on the radio, I also found myself listening to Benetti and Steve Stone because they were a great pair and fun to listen to. I'd say Benetti might be my favorite broadcaster across any sport (along with Kevin Brown and Adam Amin). I feel like Detroit needs a whole new both based on reviews from last season so we'll see who he's paired up with.

Padres owner Peter Seidler has passed away...he was only 63.

This is terrible news...this guy was easily one of the (if not the) best owners the team has ever had.  Since he became the main stakeholder, the Padres started to turn things around, and he was ready to see them become a big deal in the future.

My condolences to his family, frends and every Padre fan.

The Padres are like that movie Life with Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence. Just when you think they’re about to be released from the shackles of mediocrity, their owner dies before he can draft up and sign the pardon paperwork.

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if Seidler’s free spending was largely because he had something chronic, knew he was going to die, and threw all his cash into the ball club on his way out. If that’s the case, there’s likely to be a fire sale happening that’ll make Jeffrey Loria raise an eyebrow.

Aaron Nola re-signing in Phila for 7/$172M.  Not sure about opt outs, no trades, or anything like that.  Turned down more money elsewhere (rumored to be from Atlanta, who was confirmed to be in negotiations.)

No idea how to feel about this.  He's one of the most polarizing players (both in his performances and whether people wanted him back) I can remember in a long time.  He's never hurt, and has lead the league in innings since 2018.  He can pitch  like Cy Young in big games - but he can also pitch like me, and he's blown up at some of the most inopportune times.

He had them bent over though, as there's not another guy that could backfill his role (Snell creates too much of a tax on the bullpen) so it is what it is.  Those last 3/4 years are going to be brutal though, and the price to re-sign Zack Wheeler just went up... a lot.

The Juan Soto sweepstakes go to the New York Yankees

It would be hilarious if Soto is a one-year rental for the Yankees, only for him to sign a long-term deal with the Mets the following off-season.
