Inaccuracies that drive you nuts

I don't know if any of you collect souvenir batting helmets or not, but the accuracy of some of the teams is awful since Fotoball bought the license for these things from Sports Products of Cleveland (Laich). Without getting on my soap box, I'll post one example. Here's what they're selling as a Padres throwback helmet:

And here's what the team actually wore:

Ozcard.jpg

Quite a difference there. Thing is, I don't think any of the teams' helmets had a front painted panel as large as what Fotoball is putting on these throwbacks. Do they not have any old baseball cards to look at? Do they not know about Google?

that front panel's HUGE

i think i've seen an old Pads batting helmet at the thrift stores, and i don't remember the yellow part being THAT big. a little larger than what Ozzie got there, but not that big.

Laich...i know i've seen taht name before. they the ones who used to make gumball helmets?

Back in the late 70's and early 80's when those replica plastic batting helmets were still quite popular (I had a whole closet full of 'em), a lot of them were rather inaccurate. I don't think I ever saw a Padres helmet that didn't have the inaccurate and much larger yellow panel. And a lot of times the colors were extremely off as well. There was basically one color of blue to cover every blue team's helmet, one color of red and so on. I guess they figured that for a $2.99 plastic helmet that was really geared more for kids, you didn't have to be that realistic. And the mini replica helmets you used to be able to get at Dairy Queen? Forget it - they never had different colored front panels, even when that's all the affected team wore. I never saw a Padres helmet that wasn't solid brown.

Sometimes inaccuracies work well.

Take, for example, the Detroit Tigers' Olde English D. Well, there are really two different Ds, one for the cap and one for the home uniform. And you know what, they both look good.

Maybe that's an intentional inaccuracy.

In the early 60's, the "D" on the Tigers' caps had rounded upper right corners, like the "D" on the jerseys (the cap logo was slightly different than the jersey logo), but they changed it to the current cap "D" in the mid to late 60's. I always wondered why they decided to change it, since it took the cap logo further away than the jersey logo. They kept the old rounded "D" on the batting helmets forever. I think they just changed it to the current "D" within the last ten years.

Name and number fonts always get me on jerseys. I just can't buy it if its not right for some reason. I don't go crazy about it, but theres been times where I've walked right past jerseys I've wanted because of wrong fonts.

If you go to eBay, you can see some BoSox jerseys... with NAMES in home jerseys... and WRONG FONT in its numbers... and of course, the (in)famous circle in the "R".

That one of the Dbacks, I think, is inaccurate. The numbers' font isn't the same I saw in TV.

Ya think?

I'm not gonna piss my pants over the elbow of a 4, but that's just completely wrong.

The numbers AND the letters on that jersey are wrong-diddly-ong. It's a very cheap attempt at an imitation of an authentic jersey. The D-Backs use Matrix for both numbers and letters...this jersey uses Machine for the letters, and a generic varsity for the numbers.

TCR, you don't have to go pissing your pants over the elbow of the 4...but if you don't pay attention to even the most minute of details, you're going to be the one in possession of fake memorabilia.

San Diego State Aztec replica helmets. I love the real think, but the replicas and minis all are a completely red shell; they don't have the black air-brush trim that help make the real ones so cool in the first place.

Can't even find Aztec helmets in Atlanta, but I did see tons of them in San Diego a couple of weeks ago. They are all the same: wrong!

There's a shop in my local mall that sells the worst knockoff throwbacks in the world... Bad enough that the '70s-Steelers models (featuring Mean Joe and Franco) have the numbers outlined in gold and the stripes wrong... They're cut like HOCKEY SWEATERS. But idiots buy them, because they have the fake Mitchell & Ness tags sewn on the front.

If there's a retail store selling phony M&N products, you should tell the company.

If you have information on the manufacturing, sale, or distribution of counterfeit Mitchell & Ness products, or you think you may have purchased a counterfeit product please email our investigative team at trademark@mitchellandness.com.

Mitchell & Ness' version of the 1978 SF Giants road jersey is wrong in a number of ways including 1) style of lettering and 2) contour of lettering on arch. Other than that it's well worth the $350 at retail. (M&N on right, of course)

I take my blank jerseys to the company that does all of the lettering for the Orioles and Ravens. I had them add a name on the back of my M&N Ripken jersey and they shook their head at the numbers that were on the jersey. The front numbers were a bit too large and the back number, too small. With all of the other detail that goes into one of their expensive jerseys, they seem to get tripped up on those details.

I hate how the Red Sox batting practice unis went from navy with white bordered numbers to white navy bordered numbers...To me, it's inconsistent for the fact the the "Red Sox" script is navy w/ the white borders, and then u essentially have white numbers on the back.

has anyone else noticed that the shade of blue in the cubs batting practice jerseys and hats changes all the time?

Well hell, let's petition the Atlanta Underground, they really need to start to carry those minor Division I-A College Football teams from the West Coast.

I noticed the Cubs stuff. It's like one day they're the royal uniform blue color and then they'll have a navy color.

I have a ton of those "bubblegum" baseball and football helmets. I also have 16 of the Dairy Queen ones from back in the day. I should dig out the camera and post a pic of some of the lame ones. Being a Bucco fan, I have the all yellow Pirate hate with the black P. :D

I also had a pile of those DQ mini-batting helmets. The lack of color panels bothered me so much that one year -- during a very boring summer off of school -- I painted thepanels by hand. That includes the bills. I painted an all green A's helmet with a yellow bill, but this was before they came out withan all green hat.

Unfortunately, it was also before the Expos went to all blue hats. So there I was, painting that damned tri-color scheme onto a little plastic helmet. I needed a better hobby.
