bhambruiser
I was talking with a colleague the other day at work and we got to talking about the UAB Blazers dragon logo...which I personally think is one of the cooler logos in college sports...but he was telling me that he has a friend who worked at UAB who told him the origin of this logo and since i know many on this board are privy to logo history and origins i thought i would run this by you guys and see if it carried any weight the story goes like this:the new jersey nets were contimplating a name change to the new jersey swamp dragons (or just dragons?) and they went as far as getting a design company to design a logo for the new identity and name...but...the outcry was apparently so strong that they abandoned the concept and name change idea all together and ofcourse stayed the Nets. UAB on the other hand around '95 was looking for a new logo to go with the new athletic department image since they were becoming a I-A Football member in '96 needed an overhaul and a mascot, so the dragon worked naturally and it became the uab logo. now the question is- Is this FACT or FICTION?....hopefully the logo sleuths here at the CCSLC can help solve this logo cold case? ColeJ
the name change proposal is fact, i believe... they came up with all kinds of different names, and i've seen logos for most of them....now if the same logo became UAB's logo, i'm not so sure. FiddySicks
sounds pretty sketchy to me. im not saying its never happened, but my guess would be no. ive never personally heard a story of a team wanting a new logo, ditching it at the last second, and having another team buy it. but i cant be sure this wasnt the case, just sounds like it wouldnt hold water to me On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) TruColor
That DEFINITELY happened. In fact, "Fire Dragons" was also considered.

kc51design
the rumor was 10 years ago that Nets would change name to Dragons in honor to the guy that I have in avatar and signature - Drazen Petrovic, who was called Dragon, and I was disapointed when that went down. As for the proposed logos, they all suck. lockerroom51

CC97
The failed Dragons logo was also one of the three finalist logos to be used for the eventual Toronto Raptors -- one day, maybe back in 1999 or 2000, I went searching -- I found and posted all those Swamp Dragon logos (which is where logoserver.com got them from) along with the logos of the Toronto Dragons (looked the same except they removed "New Jersey" and "Swamp") and a logo for the Toronto Grizzlies. That was a fun day. --- Chris Creamer Founder/Editor, SportsLogos.Net "The Mothership" • News • Facebook • X/Twitter • Instagram
PhilaLogos
could you imagine that dragons wordmark on a unifrom? (shudder). That UAB logo caught my eye too, it would've been cool for an NBA expansion team.
pcgd
Personally, the a couple of the dragons marks for the Bobcats were the strongest designs that were in there. That PDF find was awesome. That was a good day as well.

That was a great day.I also liked the Flight logos they gave us for free too.I prefer the name and logos for Dragons over Bobcats, but then, the owner would have to be Dragon Jones wouldn't he?
