Devils mad over proposal to change name

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the NJ Devils named after a local urban legend about a cursed monster that lives in the Pine Barrens?

Also, I'm pretty sure the the Duke Blue Devils were named after a fighting regiment (but not sure what war, possibly revolutionary).

That's what I always heard--and they couldn't keep the team name hen they moved to Jersey--well they could have--but New Jersey Rockies makes less sense than others--

That mascot is super goofy though--not in a good mascot goofy way--but in a lame way.

Now I'm waiting for PETA or some other group to protest against the Sharks, Panthers, Thrashers, Penguins, Ducks, Bruins, Wild, Predators, Coyotes, and even the Canucks & Capitals for abusing or taking advantage of or promoting misuse of animals!

Change them all!!! :D

Dont forget the elephant balancing on the baseball in the A's alt logo :P

The organization is modeled around the great Montreal Canadiens teams, as well as the great Boston Celtics teams and their previous buisness partner the New York Yankees.

if ur going to model your team after previous teams these would be good choices.

i read a story once that when the team originally adopted the devils name religious groups sent them letters saying that unless the changed the name to angels, they would never have a winning season. three stanley cups later....

Doesn't this guy realise that having a team named "Angels" or "Saints" is really a curse? Think about it. The Angels have won one World Series and about three division titles in their history, the New Orleans Saints have gone nowhere in their history, Southhampton is recently relegated from the premiership (not sure how many trophies they have) and St. Kilda Saints have only one one premiership since 1897.

Conversely, the New Jersey Devils won three stanley cups in 9 years, Manchester United, known as the Red Devils have won numerous trophies throughout their history and MelbourneFC, known as the Demons have won about 12 premierships (although none since the 60's)

Now there's something that should get a newspaper columist's attention :)

I saw, I came, I left.

Obvisiouly this guy knows nothing about the organization. When it comes to the name, logo and uniforms they are just like the Yankees and our against any changes. Lou Lamoriello has saif many times he is against changing the Devils identity even adding an alt. He has the Devils will not take part in those gimmicks to make a few extra bucks. The organization is modeled around the great Montreal Canadiens teams, as well as the great Boston Celtics teams and their previous buisness partner the New York Yankees. So don't expect any changes as long as the current owner and Lou Lamoriello is still alive. And if they keep on winning (which they show all indications of doing when the NHL comes back) don't expect them of ever changing.

Bucfan the Catholic Killer choice was ironically funny because close to 50% of New Jersey is Catholic.  ^_^

Thankfully, being that they're modeled after the great teams like the Celtics, Canadiens, and Yankees, they won't do stupid things just to boost revenue. Stupid things like adding an unnecessary alt, or changing their colors just to add black to the scheme.

Oh wait - never mind.

What unneccesary alt? They've never used an alt.

I think that the stuff of changing the nickname "Devils" only because it may offend religious persons is too absurd.

I'm living in a strongly Catholic country, Argentina, and there is a really popular soccer club called "Independiente" dubbed "the Red Devils" (like Manchester United). And nobody complained against the satanic nickname. So what?

I appreciate that the Devils don't have an alt and I do think they have a great logo, but let's not get carried away in comparing them to the Celts, Yanks and, Habs. They have been around for about 25 years or so, I think and they have had their current color scheme for about 15?

(Maybe I am disgruntled because my favorite hockey jersey EVER is the road devils from the Christmas era and I think going to the black destroyed the uniqueness).

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

What about just plain NEW JERSEY! ?

Or better yet, the New Jersey Jerseys. Their logo will be an exact replica of the jersey they are wearing.

--Roger "Time?" Clemente.

I'm getting an old Cincinnati Cyclones logo flashback

I also think the Devils colour scheme suits them perfectly. Is it bland? Sure, but does anyone believe that green is a colour you think of when you hear the word devil?

True, the Devils are great when it comes to this. They may not have the history and tradition those teams have, but they are probably the only expansion era team to develop their own similar tradition.

kudos

Ok, so it WASN'T a problem in 1982, but now it is? That makes no sense whatsoever. I'm guess they want to do this to "clean up" the image of the area so to speak. That's a horrible idea. Like someone else already said, the NJ government should be working on other things than trying to change a team's name. If they are to change a team's name, why haven't they pushed the Jets and Giants to take New Jersey? (Oh my, I might have just opened up a can of worms.) Seriously, NJ government, let it go! It took you 9 years just to FINALLY get a new arena moving (remember, during '95 playoffs, the Devils were supposedly packed and ready to move into the Nashville Omniplex (now the Gaylord Entertainment Center. Hence why the Preds were the first expansion team, the rink was already built.)

Fans picked the name, alienate fans, who just happen to be voters? Sure that makes sense for the politicans' re-election bids.

Secondly, you do that, and every state will then go on a frenzy and open up doors for the nicknames to challenged left and right. Which would mean PETA would go after any animal (or mammal) nicknames. Indian groups could start up the abolishment of Indian names. Creamer showing his "evil side" wants to get rid of Angels and Saints. Are Toronto teachers gonna file a law suit because Leafs isn't spelled correct and demand them to make it Maple Leaves? I mean next thing you know, pro sports in North America, who MOSTLY are known by their nicknames can turn into Euro soccer (football) (or now, MLS :cursing: ) and have the Stanley Cup Finals matchup be H.C. New Jersey vs. Club San Jose? They defeated Philadelphia United and H.C Los Angeles of Quackaheim H.C.

I thought the team was named after the famous mythical creature, the jersey devil. It supposedly has wings and lives in the woods somewhere. Just tell everyone that that is why you're called the devils, and I think people would have less of a problem.

If this has already been brought up I apologise, I didn't read the first two pages.

What evil side, he's agnostic :D

As for the Leafs, do you realise that the majority shareholder in MLSE is ..... the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan? If you can find a way on how can they file a lawsuit against themselves, I would like to hear about it :D

In other words...

Puckguy: let it go, its over let it go.

Buddies: NJ politicians has some unfinished business. They think making the Devils change their name to Happy Faces will give the state a better look.

That politician: I want it though.

Puckguy: What I'd tell ya? Let it go.

Buddy: Devils? You're still not going on about how "evil" it is? Come on politician, that's like not even worth it.

That politican: Ya know Buddy and Puck, let me ask you a question, why do you think I got into politics?

Buddy: Isn't that easy, for the power, money, and secret sex affairs? (Just a generalization, :P )

That politician: Well I want to lead our state, and maybe our nation. But that team cheap shots us, steals our reputation of my finger (Puckguy's note: it doesn't make sense, but to keep the "Miracle" script kinda together well... :P ) How'd you feel?

Puckguy: Everyone...ok some teams have offendable nicknames, so what? It's a friggin sports team. Let it go.

That politician: Ya know Puck it's funny you say that.

Puckguy: Where are you going?

That politician: Back to my legislative office, is that ok with you motha?

Puckguy: No it ain't ok. You think you're all that since you're in office. One thing that PERSONALLY makes you cringe and because you have POWER want to change it? Not for the people of New Jersey, but only for yourself? Who voted you in? The people of New Jersey. Who picked out the nickname, "Devils"? The people of New Jersey. NOW SHUT UP AND LET IT GO! AND DON'T CALL ME MOTHER!
