Today, more stuff on the WBC (AKA The Baseball World Cup) was announced. They've got a website, and a slick logo.

They also have some brackets, and other stuff. Pretty cool.

Although I hope those uniforms are simply temporary until they get real ones. Those are waaaaaay too generic.

This is a very good idea. First off, I didn't know baseball was even known in places like South Africa, Italy, and China.

Secondly, this is a chance to see some of the best players in the world play for their home land. Think about it.

I have to give Hockey more respect with their World Cup, they only had 8 teams and didn't try to stretch it especially when they could have. However with the baseball 16 teams is a joke. Let's look at the possible big name players for a few of these teams as highlighted by the web site.

Tawain- Chien-Ming Wang, a rookie with the New York Yankees. Granted he's pitched well this year and has been the Yanks most consistant pitcher. But Still. He's not even the worst.

China- They didn't even highlight a mlb player.

South Africa- Same as China

Netherlands- Andruw Jones. He's a great player however he's not from Netherlands. He's from a Dutch Colony, which shouldn't count. If the Netherlands get to use their colonies why can't the US use Puerto Rico. I'm calling foul.

Australia- Justin Huber, Who?. I know they won the Silver in the Olympics but that was against countries that didn't send it's best players because they play in MLB. But at least this guy is in MLB.

Italy- Jason Simontacchi. 1 this guy isn't in the Majors anymore. 2. He's an American Citizen and is not a Citizen of Italy.

The eligibilty requirements seem to be on the random side. And there are too nay teams. A 10 team tournament you be goo. 2 Pools of 5 Top 3 in each pool adavnce top team gets a bye get a pool champion each of them play for the Championship.

It's a good idea, but poorly thought out. Each country should have a decent size MLB players to choose a team from, after all this is a MLB tournament. What do you expect from Bud.

Yeah I was curious about that rule. I'm part Italian but I did not grow up nor ever even been to Italy. But if I was good enough could I decide to play for the Italian team? I have also heard that Mike Piazza may decide to play for Italy.

Anyway, I'm excited for the tournament and will be rooting for the USA and Italy

Huber plays for KC Royals, he went to the school i am currently at......

also on the Australia page it says the Japanese:

The stunner, though, was soon to come: a 1-0 victory over Japan. It was a game that saw Chris Oxspring and Jeff Williams combine to pitch a five-hitter against a Japanese team that used its own Nippon Professional Leaguers in the Olympics for the first time in history.

I'm disapointed in Japan for going ahead and particiapting in the tournament.

*Edit* I take that back, the NPB hasn't accepted the invation yet, as they're still disputing the timing of the tourney, which I fully agree with.

Why, it's going to MLB players playing. The Countries and their baseball organizations have little if anything to do with it.

The Canadian team's gonna be pretty good if all of them choose to participate.

Harden, Bedard, Francis, Bay, Morneau, Koskie, Stairs, Walker

They could really give the USA a good run.

Group B in the Bank One Ballpark, I just can't wait :woot:

where did you see this at?

The site is mentioned in Team USA's "bio" page. The US will host 2 of the 4 pools: One in Arizona, and the other in Florida. The US will also host one of the two Quarterfinal rounds, both Semifinal games, and the Final game, in sites that haven't been named yet. Japan will host one of the pools, and Puerto Rico will host the other pool group, as well as the other Quarterfinal round.
