NoHoJoe
Before the ground is to be broken on the new-and unnecessary- $800 million stadium that will no doubt be footed by the taxpayers, we New York Sports fans need to take a stand and preserve the Names of our football teams...The New York Giants and The New York Jets. We must tell Governor George Pataki and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to propose legislation that if the New York Giants and New York Jets are to be called New York, then they must play in NYC or New York State. Otherwise, if they are to stay in New Jersey, then the Giants and Jets must be legally obligated to call themselves the New Jersey Giants and the New Jersey Jets repsectively. If the Jets and Giants are to remain New York City teams, then we must tell New Jersey Governor John Corzine to cancel the $800 million deal as soon as possible, and ask Pataki and Bloomberg to draw up new plans from a new stadium for the Jets in Queens and a new stadium for the Giants in the Bronx!!!!ITS UP TO YOU, NEW YORK, NEW YORK!!!SPREAD THE WORD!!!!! Shmee
Speaking as a Giants fan, this is retarded. If the Jets could have secured land in Queens to build a stadium on, don't you think they would have done so some time within the last 30 years? They tried building a stadium in New York City (Manhattan specifically) and got nowhere. Their chances of building a stadium in Queens are just as minimal.Same goes for the Giants. There's no place to build a stadium in New York City that could be both fit for an NFL team and cost feasible. And as has been previously mentioned, these teams represent the New York metropolitan area, not just the city itself. It's the same as any other team having its stadium/arena/facility in a suburb of its city and still going by the name of the city instead of that of the suburb. FiddySicks
I thought when the Jets had the big Manhattan deal, they should have kept the New York moniker, and the Giants should have been called the New Jersey Giants.

I don't think the Jets current ownership wants to play in Queens. They could go in with the Mets to build some sort of combined stadium (and by that I mean a Baseball Stadium and a Football stadium with a connection between the 2) and it would go through now problem. As far as the Giants their historical fan base is in NJ so they don't want to move out of NJ. I believe the 2 teams have already reached an agreement to jointly build a stadium at the meadowlands that would be co owned by both teams and the state has given them the land and the 2 teams (or just the Giants) would pay off the debt that is still owed on the current stadium for the 70's when it was built. I know the Jets have already started searching site in northern NJ for it's headquarters. They will be moving it from Hofstra on Long Island. Corzine isn't going to cancel a deal that keeps buisness in the state and is basically free as the Jets and Giants are paying for it themselves.Anyway NoHoJo what do you have against New Jersey? brinkeguthrie
I always wondered why the Niners are in fact based in San Jose. (Actually, in Santa Clara, right by San Jose. That's where the HQ and practices are.)
VitaminD
Are you serious about this? The essence of your threadstarter is that you want the Giants and Jets to forgo nearly 1 billion dollars being offered by the state of New Jersey from the coffers made up of New Jerseyans' tax revenues to fund stadiums that will put the teams in virtually the exact same location that they've been calling home for nearly 3 decades over a naming issue that no one is contesting?Nowhere have I read that Corzine asked/demanded/required either team to change its name.Nowhere have I read that this money requires a single New York resident to shell out a single tax dollar to the state of New Jersey to fund this project.Nowhere have I read that the new stadium site will be anywhere but in the metro New York City area, which is right where East Rutherford is (6 miles from the Tunnel puts it closer to Manhattan that many parts of the 5 Boroughs are to Manhattan... ).Nowhere have I read that Pataki, Bloomberg or anyone else has found suitable land on which to put these stadiums. What is your big issue? You're getting a new place for your teams, it's not costing you a blessed thing (yet I, a southern New Jersey resident who hates the Giants and bleeds Eagles green WILL be contributing tax money toward the project... go figure), they're not going anywhere, and no one's making them change their name. They've been the New York Giants/Jets forever, and will continue to do so, for their games are played within plain sight of New York City, within the New York metropolitan area. Pat
Then wouldnt Dallas have to change its name to Irving? Its still in the NYC Metropolitan area, so I odnt have a problem with it. Id rather one team at least play in NY, but 2 nearly billion dollar stadiums being built in that area seems farfecthed even if it is 2 different states. JBPerry
Then wouldnt Dallas have to change its name to Irving? Actually, they would have to change it to Arlington pretty soon. Same thing goes for FC Dallas, politically they should be called FC Frisco or FC Collin (Frisco is in Collin County, not Dallas County)
KevinMcD
Many teams are not located within city limits. Who come to mind are DAL, NYG, NYJ, WAS, MIA, NE, and The Bills are located in my town of Orchard Park about 15-20 mins. outside of Buffalo. How Bout.....The Buffalo Bills of Orchard Park

jkrdevil
Jersey sucks. Move to Shea for God's sake. Shea sucks. Stay in Jersey. And that's comes from someone in Long Island where it would be closer to go to Shea than Jersey. I never got the Jersey is a dump stereotype. It's the second wealthiest state in the U.S. behind Connecticut. Outside of Newark and Camden the state is nothing but suburbs of New York and Philly. leopard88
I never got the Jersey is a dump stereotype. It's the second wealthiest state in the U.S. behind Connecticut. Outside of Newark and Camden the state is nothing but suburbs of New York and Philly. You are pretty much correct, but you have to admit that there is a fairly substantial area along the Turnpike, Route 9, etc., as you approach NYC from the south and/or west that is largely factories, rundown towns, salvage yards, oil refineries and swampland. I travelled to Perth Amboy on several occasions to visit a heavily contaminated former factory site during the course of a former job, so I know of what I speak. All of that is where the stereotype comes from. When that is what most of the people travelling along the East Coast see, that is the image that sticks. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter what the rest of the state looks like because most people never see the rest of it. I have seen Princeton, I-78 west of I-287, Avalon, Stone Harbor and other nice areas in Jersey, but I'm most certainly in the minority.
