Evidently he thinks he's better than Jordan, so he's going to one-up MJ.

not to mention LeBron too. LeBron and Jordan were and are so much better than Kobe. LeBron and Jordan actually make their teammates better. Kobe is one of the most selfish players around.

LeBron is so much better than Kobe? I don't know about that. Kobe doesn't make their teamates better? If I remember correctly Kobe dished the rock to Shaq for 3 straight titles. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely hate Kobe but I dont think LeBron has proven anywhere close to enough to be mentioned in the same breath as Kobe or MJ.

One quick question though...Do players get a cut of their jersy sales? If so, this is simply a move for money.

From the ESPN Article:

"In order for a player to change jersey numbers at will, he either has to change teams or have the team inform the league of the decision more than six months in advance. Players who stay with the same team must have worn the same number for four seasons or longer."

This can't be true; look at Ron Artest throughout the years with Indiana:

He wore #15 when he first came to the Pacers during the 2001-02 season...

...then switched to #23 to honor Michael Jordan for the 2002-03 season...

...then switched again to #91 to honor Dennis Rodman for the 2004-05 season...

...then switched back to #15 for the 2005-06 season until he was traded to Sacramento.

It's possible this is a new rule instituted because of Artest. I don't think any other leagues have a rule like this; in baseball and football, at least, players change numbers quite often, usually when a new player comes and wants that number.

One more question: If this is in fact true, when Kobe retires, do the Lakers retire #8 or #24, or both (assuming his number gets retired)?

I say that Kobe doesn't make his teammates better because look at last years dismal season for the Lakers. It just looks to me that LeBron is more team oriented, due to his triple doubles and assist average (6.6. APG compared to Kobe's 4.5 APG). I guess because Kobe has the rings you unfortunately may be right for now, even though I think Kobe is one of the biggest jerks out there, but I think LeBron will be better than Kobe. Maybe LeBron isn't at Kobe's level yet, but he's damn close.

Excellent question. I'd assume they'd retire #8 and not #24. He won his championships in #8, got his popularity in #8, became a star in #8. Switching his number at this point is just ridiculous. Stick with #8 and live with it. Part of a player's identity is in his uniform number. It's just plain strange to switch it now.

What if he ends up winning a couple more championships wearing #24?

Also, here's a cruddy mock-up I did in Photoshop...

i think that this rule was put in place because of ron, that is my understanding of the rule. i know stern was mad about ronny "honoring" rodman at least.

when i saw the title of this thread i figured he was switching to 81. wouldnt have surprised me, hell, i wouldnt be surprised if stern made him do that.

I think when its all said and done Lebron will end up more of a prolific player than either Kobe OR MJ. The reason i think this is because, for how young he is, Lebron has shown himself to be one of the most mature players in all of the NBA. When you combine that amount of young talent with maturity, youve got one scary player. hes still young, he'll be ok. And ill say one thing about the three titles the lakers won. i wont discredit them because 3 straight is a damn hard task to pull off, but last nights Heat Bulls game showed me one thing. Shaq makes a star a super star. Wade made a ton of huge plays but he also had a HUGE advantage. Any time he got in any kind of trouble he just tossed the ball somewhere within the vicinity of the hoop and Shaq was able to put it in. Thats what Kobe has seemed to lack since Shaq left, the ability to make something out of nothing. And thats something that MJ was able to do his entire career, and Lebron is showing he has the ability to do.

24-Not even a basketball number, who wears 24?

You mean aside from Bobby Jones (retired, 76ers), Moses Malone (retired - Rockets), Bill Bradley (retired, Knicks) and Rick Barry (retired, Warriors)? Or do you mean current players... like Richard Jefferson, Marvin Williams, Donyell Marshall, Andre Miller, Antonio McDyess, Morris Peterson or Desmond Mason? (That's off the top of my head, there's gotta be a couple of benchwarmers I missed, and I don't even like the NBA.)

Good point, though...

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.
