WNBA jerseys

I have actually attended a WNBA game.

My girlfriend's best friend plays for the Indiana Fever, so I went with her. It was a preseason game so the crowd was even less than it normally is, but I have to say, I was impressed. The game is pretty entertaining and all the judgements about how bad they are are over blown. The one flaw in the WNBA game is they aren't very good passers. But they can shoot and hustle.

The crowd was impressive considering my closed minded thoughts coming into the game. It was a game that featured the return of a Purdue rookie, so there were some folks there to see that. (the game was in indianapolis) I saw quite a few of the NEW fever jerseys. Considering they had come out only a week or so previous I was impressed.

I attended Game 2 of the WNBA finals in 2003 (LA Sparks at Detroit Shock). Amazing. First of all, they say that series was a turning point in WNBA history. They played very, very aggressively, and the games all came down to the wire. Second of all, the crowd was great. Sellout, loud as a Pistons game. Quite fun.

I wonder if she uses those big dishes on the side of her head to gain some extra air time when going up for a rebound.

Despite that, she is kinda cute.

Just looking at the pics and wondering, do they do fashion shoots with the players in tuxes or suits or whatever for the NBA? Just seems weird seeing them posed with the jersey, which is totally normal, and then a separate picture with some stupid pose like they're a fashion model or something.

At least we know she can handle a ball... or two... :P

Update on Brooke Smith:

Unfortunately, this adorable ballplayer is no longer on a WNBA roster. She was released by the Lynx on April 26th, was picked up off waivers by Connecticut at the start of May, and has since been cut by the Sun as well. According to my research, she was a three-time all-conference player at Stanford - but apparently not WNBA material. It's quite disappointing for such a cute girl.

So she's a free agent basketball-wise. What about in other aspects of life...?

Damn. How many other leagues would give up on a second-round pick that quickly???

Any league that can only carry 12 on its roster without a developmental league below it.

Its like saying giving up on a 7th round pick in training camp in the NFL is odd. Or a second round pick in the NBA.

Its the nature of the WNBA that only the first round picks make the team, usually they are also used as marketing tools regardless of skills or playing time. The 2nd round picks have to earn their way onto the team.

Some players get lost in the shuffle. When you only have 12 teams with 12 players each, there are going to be some drafted players slip through the cracks.

I think you'll find this exact thing happens in the NBA sometimes.

I'm sure you can find examples on all teams, but as a hometown fan, I gotta point to the Suns with some picks that never played for us or anyone.
