SteveR
Correct. They are a throwback, but I forget from when. But they were originally an alternate, back in the mid-1970s.Having watched several Bullets-Spurs playoff series from the mid-70s, I can attest they weren't alternates. (The NBA DIDN'T HAVE alternates then) They were the one-and-only home set.I also remember the set that had the "humped" piping along the back side of the shorts. OMMF
- Atlanta, when 2009 comes around, should go with a red one with the same template except "ATL" on the chestI hate when teams use ATL, PHX, MIA, or any other wacky abbreviation for their city names. They are a sports team, not an airport. If they can't afford the additional cost to spell out the whole word, then leave it off. IMO, it looks like total CRAP!!!! I would rather turn the channel rather than watch a team wear such crappy, piss poor lettering across their chest. I don;t know what moron ever thought that would be a good idea, but I wish that it would be a trend that would die a horrible death and NEVER be resurrected. I am taking your quote as an example, not out of disrespect to your opinion. This is just my opinion.my opinion is that both of you are right, in a way. i think the hawks have been set up to make that ATL red alt since they got this new identity, as it was in their set, but only used on the @ss of the shorts. but that doesn't mean its a good idea. i personally have no problem with it, mostly because only the cities that it works for have been using it. true, it will not stand the test of time, but most NBA teams aren't gunning for that anyway(jersey sales!!). it would really bother me if teams that it didn't make sense for started using it just because it was "cool". ATL and PHX work great to abbreviate the city name, but not make it hard to understand. I would hate to see POR, SAC, DEN, TOR, MIN, etc. because those just don't seem to automatically refer to a city. whatever, my 1/50th of a dollar.Except that almost all of the teams you listed don't use those abbreviations as airport call signs.Portland = PDX, which I use all the time to refer to the citySacramento = SMFToronto = YYZMinneapolis = MSPSo, assuming that Atlanta, Phoenix and Miami are using airport call signs, you would see some unexpected abbreviations if you gave one to each team. AAO
They're not airport references, although they may be what you see on the arrival/departure screens. They are urbanisms--derived from the people of the cities. ATL is very popular in Atlanta, even before the release of the movie 'ATL'. PHX simply sounds like Phoenix, its cool. The only other team in the league it may make sense for would be NYC. All though, I don't think the Knicks would submit themselves to that. The Hornets could pull off 'NOLA' if they really wanted to, which i doubt. (The ASG game alt logo with NOLA was awesome though). None of the other teams in the league would ever use the three letter terming. It's just not feasible. batman1211
PHX simply sounds like Phoenix, its cool. No, PHX would sound like "fix" or "fax" but in no way would it ever in any way sound like "Phoenix". ...And, it is not cool. It is stupid. Not when you pronounce it phonetically, but think about it. If it's on a jersey, it stands for a location or a nickname. There are no nicknames like that (except like UW-Green Bay Phoenix), so it has to be a location. What other locations fit the pattern of P_H_X?And when he said it's cool, I took it as "it's all right or acceptable / not an issue." It's trendy, but I don't know if that's the same thing as the other definition of "cool."

tohasbo
Charlotte Bobcats: There are rumours about a rebranding of the orange and white unis, according them with the template of the blue, which will become the away first option...Milwaukee Bucks: According with the 2-years-rule they will wear a red alternate uni the next season...Minnesota Timberwolves: Since 96-97 they are wearing that ugly 90's uni, and it's time to rebrand it, and also the logo... Blue&Green, of course.Portland Trail Blazers: They wanted to change it on summer, so i suppose that it will be some changes there...Toronto Raptors: They will introduce a black alternate, and if the league allows them to make it maybe Magic or Rockets will want the same for their alternates...Apart from that, I am hoping for some rebranding in Golden State and Clippers, and if it's possible a Grizzlies alternate.Sorry about my english, I am from Barcelona and, you know...http://taylorwolves.blogspot.comI agree with Charlotte going blue...but other than that I am not sure about the rest of the teams here... Which, someone found pics of and then we discussed. The Dark Red alt - used during the horse-days - wasn't in question.

mantleisthebest7
I've been curious about New Jersey. They have had the same set since the mid-late 90's (like the T'Wolves), and I was curious if anyone has heard anything on them? It is probably the most used shorthand for people who live here. It would probably look out of place on a jersey, though. Sac is a really common "Urbanism" in this area.So is "Cowtown", from what I see, presently being in the vicinity of central/north Califoolya. (How can I be 15 miles from the Pacific Coast and yet still look around and see nothing but MOUNTAINS and cows all over the daggone place? I see enough hills and mess back east! It is some nice scenery out this way, though.)Having said that, outside the ATL and NYC (since PHX already carries that "code" on their alt jerseys), about the only other "cool" mark I couls see popping up on a jersey might actually be "305"--which ain't actually a word at all, but bear in mind that down south, we refer to the region we from by area code QUITE frequently--or at least we do in FL. (For those who still tryna catch up..."305" is the area code for "Miami".) However, having said that, one could imagine the confusion that could come from seeing "305" across the chest of a basketball jersey with a jersey number up underneath it.(Oh--and if the Sonics relocate, I wouldn't be too surprised to see an "OKC" 3rd/alt pop up at some point down the line.)BUT...this IS all just one man's opinion...my two rusted Lincolns. *Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. || dribbble || Behance ||
