Nationals Refuse to Pay Rent

Recommended Posts

More than midway through the baseball season, the Washington Nationals' owners have failed to pay $3.5 million in rent for the District's new ballpark, contending that the state-of-the-art stadium is still incomplete. Besides withholding rent, the team is demanding damages of $100,000 a day, dating from March 1. The team and the city are also at odds over the timing of sales tax payments on tickets, with the Nationals paying game-by-game and the city wanting tax revenue from pre-sold ticket packages upfront.

This is a pretty old story. It's all over some clause in the lease. As far as I know this has been going on since the start of the season. I heard about it on The Tony Kornheiser show a while back.

hey now lets not get too hasty on this. the city absolutely HAD to have baseball no matter what the cost. they skimp on construction costs, they overcharge for everything at the ballpark. i wouldnt let this city run a dairy queen. i dont think the Lerners should just not pay rent, for crying out loud they got a ballpark with city tax dollars that could have been spent elsewhere, but both parties are to blame.

Contraction?

Probably not...but so far the stadium, fan support and the city have been rather pathetic.

Considering the team that plays in the new stadium is almost twenty games back, and plays in an area with a fair amount of transplants (who also get transferred every two-four years), I'm not too concerned.

When the team showed some signs of life, like second or third, even a competitive fourth in the division, they were doing very well at the gate. I'll start panicing when the Nats are five games up and can't draw more than a Mystics game.

They should of went to Portland or Vegas. Didn't any one notice that baseball had already failed in D.C.? Twice?

One owner was a racist who wanted to "get away from all those Negro folk".(Calvin Griffith)

The other one was a very shady man who dismanled the team. (Bob Short)

Now, clearly, the third time might not be the charm for baseball in D.C. If that's the case, bring in the Mayflowers. But bring them from the south. The caravan won't survive if they drive through Baltimore.

And in doing so, severely damaged the market. Things aren't going to be better right away.

In this instance I don't think Baltimore would mind

That's fine with me if the Nationals are in the vans.

I still maintain that Winnipeg would have made much more sense for the Expos. That way, their 5,000-average attendance wouldn't have looked nearly as cavernous in the 7,000-capacity Canwest Global Park.
