Team support

I actually just remembered something I did way back in '02, when the Olympics were in Utah.

At the time, I was a 15-year-old with braces, and you actually got to choose different colors for ties (held the wire on, whatever). Since the Olympics were on, and I knew I'd have these said ties during the entire two weeks, I had the dentist put red ties on top and blue on the bottom.

So I was wondering, what's the most off-the-wall, unusual way you've supported your team? And t-shirts or whatever doesn't count, lol.

I had orange and black on my braces for the bengals (keep in mind this was 1999 through 2001 when the Bengals were horrible) and I would've gotten Ohio State or Cincinnati Reds colors, but my mom wouldn't let me get red bands because she thought it looked like my mouth was bleeding.

Other than Braces, I haven't done anything.

The craziest thing I have done was wear the same Cardinals "NL champs" T-shirt for the duration of the 2006 World Series.

I had red and white braces ties that when combined with the braces made my high school's colors. My cerebral palsy legbrace has a Patriots helmet on it. During the 2004 world series, I took a red marker and made a big spot on the ankle of my sock as a tribute to Curt Schilling. That's about it.

Grew a playoff beard when the Hawks were in the playoffs. I know it's done for hockey, but I've never heard of it being done for basketball.

Good thing they got eliminated quickly. I was looking bummy by the time Game 7 rolled along.

So basically, I NEVER get to see my Bucs play unless they happen to be on the road vs Oakland or San Francisco. Most of you know where this is going, but just in case you don't:

Yup, thats right. I dress up like a fu*king pirate.

And not just any pirate mind you, I generally try to dress up as the most ridiculously flamboyant pirate I possibly can. I got the idea a few years ago when the Bucs played the Niners the day before Haloween, it killed two birds with one stone. It showed my over the top team pride, and it as well got me a costume for the next day. And I figure it like this, if the team could go through the first twenty years looking as ridiculous as they did, it's only right for me to give that tribute right back to them. Unfortunately the bucs have lost EVERY GAME I've done the pirate gig (Hell, they've lost EVERY GAME I've been to  ) so I've decided to retire the look for good. I figure the change will be the same for me as it was for the team. Get away from what everybody laughs at for something sleek and cool, and maybe the wins will start pouring in too :)

Hmmm...

1) when Rickey Williams began playing for the Saints, I actually did the 'dreadlock wig' thing. I made it myself out of an old mop head dyed black, tucked under a Saints baseball cap. Of course, I wasn't the only one wearing it. I only did it for a couple of early home games....

2) Last year, after the first few LSU football games, I noticed that home or away, I had been wearing the same outfit: a yellow LSU polo-type shirt, and a certain pair of khaki shorts. For the Kentucky game (away), the shorts were dirty, so I wore a different pair of (army green) shorts while watching the game on TV. LSU lost in triple overtime. The rest of the season, I made sure to wear the same outfit... except for the Arkansas game (at home) the day after Thanksgiving, it was COLD and damp I would be out in the elements. I wore khaki long pants, and an LSU sweatshirt over the polo. LSU once again lost in triple overtime.

Of course for the SEC championship and Nat'l championship, I made sure to wear the 'lucky outfit', even it was freezing cold, snowing/raining, hurricane, whatever.

It is what it is.

On just a few days' notice, I traveled 23 straight hours utilizing planes, trains and automobiles in order to get from Rock Hill, South Carolina to Spokane, Washington for the 2007 NCAA Tournament to watch Winthrop play. A direct flight from Charlotte to Spokane was $1200...not exactly something I could afford. So, I booked a flight to Portland for $475 thinking that at least gets me on the right side of the country...and then took Amtrak from Portland to Spokane for $99.

I woke up at 4:30 AM ET, got to the airport early for my 8 AM flight, changed planes in Salt Lake City and then flew to Portland. Got into Portland at about 2 PM, first found the Amtrak station and then set about trying to find something to eat. Ended up in a sports bar where they were showing the early games. I had all my luggage with me so it was obvious I was traveling...and with my Winthrop shirt on, they asked if I was there for the tournament...yep, all the way from South Carolina. There was a sports talk radio broadcasting from the sports bar, so I went on there for a few minutes and talked and whatnot, they wanted to hear my story. They gave me a copy of NCAA March Madness 07 for PS2 and shortly after, I was on my way to Portland via Amtrak. Finally made it into Spokane at about 2 AM Pacific, which felt like 5 AM to me...got to sleep at 3 AM, 7 hours before tipoff. March Madness, baby.

Winthrop ended up beating Notre Dame, so it was all completely worth it. The photographers had a field day, and I ended up being featured on the cover of a documentary that was being produced...

Also, when I'm not mascoting, I tend to go a little nuts...

Don't you have a team logo tattoo as well? While a team logo might not be "unusual," it is a pretty good indicator of dedicated support.

Haha...no. I did once post a picture of myself in front of Miami Ink with a Winthrop tattoo on my left shoulder. However, it was a complete Photoshop job, just to mess with a few friends here.

A Winthrop tattoo would be cool now...but what about in 20 years?

I suppose it's a lack of support here, but it's similar, kinda.. I filled out an MLB all-star ballot this year, voting for every single AL player EXCEPT Manny Ramirez. A few members on the board were there to see my super ballot. Too bad other people didn't follow my lead...Jay Gibbons could've been an all-star :D

I also applauded at the bar last night when Manny got plunked. The Phillies fans didn't approve, as it loaded the bases. I really just can't stand the guy.
