Mr. Team

Recommended Posts

I'll only do the current NL teams, because they're who I really know best. I'd be taking too many shots in the dark with the AL.

Mr. Diamondback: Luis Gonzalez

Mr. Brave: Hank Aaron (Mr. Atlanta Brave: Chipper Jones)

Mr. Cub: Ernie Banks

Mr. Red: Pete Rose

Mr. Rockie: Todd Helton

Mr. Marlin: Jeff Conine

Mr. Astro: Craig Biggio

Mr. Dodger: Jackie Robinson (Mr. Los Angeles Dodger: Tommy Lasorda)

Mr. Brewer: Robin Yount

Mr. Met: Tom Seaver

Mr. Phillie: Mike Schmidt

Mr. Pirate: Roberto Clemente

Mr. Padre: Tony Gwynn

Mr. Giant: Willie Mays

Mr. Cardinal: Stan Musial

Mr. National: Ryan Zimmerman

I agree with every one of these.

My American League picks:

Mr. Oriole: Cal Ripken, Jr.

Mr. Red Sox: Ted Williams

Mr. Yankee: Ruth or Mantle. Good arguments for both.

Mr. Blue Jay: Joe Carter

Mr. Ray: Carl Crawford

Mr. White Sox: Shoeless Joe Jackson or possibly even Frank Thomas.

Mr. Indian: Bob Feller

Mr. Tiger: Ty Cobb

Mr. Royal: George Brett

Mr. Twin: Kirby Puckett

Mr. Angel: Tim Salmon

Mr. Athletic: Ricky Henderson

Mr. Mariner: Ken Griffey, Jr.

Mr. Ranger: Nolan Ryan

Mr. Pilot: Jim Bouton

Mr. Pirate: Roberto Clemente

I was gonna suggest Bouton for Mr Pilot, but then it occurred to me that he was traded half way through the year! Also does a relief pitcher really get Mr.... award for ANY team?

But in the end I have to agree that Clemente is probably the right pick for Mr Pirate. As iconic as the 'We are famileeee' team is, Clemente kept the Pirates alive in the 60s, and led the 1971 Series Champs. Also about as cool a ball player as there has ever been.

As for Ty Cobb, he gets Mr Tiger for me simply because look at the periods of success for the Detroit Tigers. Though Cobb didn't win a world series, his period with the Tigers is there most consistent period of success. Though I can appreciate the calls for Hank Greenberg and Al Kaline. (Grewenberg would be an interesting pick as the first Jewish Baseball star, just as Willie Mays and Jackie Robionson get credit for being leaders of colored ball players)

Whoaa.. a saintsfan sighting! Where have ya been?

Been busy for a couple of years, the odd snoop around, but not really had time to post! Should be around a little more from now on! At least for a bit! :D

Other than that, all is open to conversation...

For the O's, I can't think of anybody except Ripken. He was an Oriole for his life, even before he played. He was in and around the team when his father was with the team. He caught the last out of a World Series, he was one of the best players in MLB history, and has done so much for Maryland and the Baltimore community. If hopes and some rumors come true, and he leads an ownership group that buys the Orioles and returns them to glory, you might as well rename Baltimore, Ripkenmore.

The only other player I can think of possibly saying is Brooks Robinson, he, like Ripken, was an Oriole for life and has done numerous amazing things with the team, but when you have Ripken as your competition, you aren't going to win this.

Mr. A's = Jimmy Foxx.

Other than the fact that Ted Williams is head and shoulders above most other Red Sox, I think either Carl Yastremski [sp?] or Carlton Fisk would be my favourites for Mr Red Sock.

Fisk's reputation might come from one shot, but remember he was a New Englander, and was a stalwart of the team before moving to the White Sox.

No, it has to be Pesky given how he has remained with the organization for so long after his playing days and what he means to the Red Sox image.

Fixed that for ya.

Edit: Beat by Shum. Oh well, still funny.

Mr. White Sock is not Minnie Minoso at all. I don't know who is (I have my opinion), but here are five nominees better suited:

Frank Thomas

Nellie Fox

Carlton Fisk

Luis Aparicio

Luke Appling
