Well, they're currently enjoying the success the NHL had circa November 1994.

Nobody cares about arena football on any higher level. The teams aren't civic institutions, they're arena tenants.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

BOTTOM LINE

The AFL was enjoying the same success as the NHL was during the 90s

Wait, what? How so?

Well Gots when the AFL signed with NBC back in 03 NBC treated the TV deal as if they were still doing the AFC schedule unlike ABC only televised the opening week and the ArenaBowl. Like the NHL the AFL was slowly moving up and had a shot of overtaking the NHL since they still has not recovered from the 04-05 cancelation but unfortunately the AFL suffered the same fate.

BOTTOM LINE

I feel the same way about the MLS.

The NHL was also able to sell out more of its games than the AFL and was much healthier financially. The players also commanded significantly higher salaries throughout. To compare the two is at best a joke and at worst a sign that someone bought the bill of goods David Baker (May crawdads feast on his ankles) was selling.

FWIW, the AFL celebrated its season when the NHL wasn't playing by folding Detroit, Indiana, and Carolina....with Indiana being a naked attempt to keep expansion fees artificially inflated.

I still don't see the comparison. The AFL didn't "suffer the same fate" - quite the opposite.

The NHL came back from its hiatus prepared for the future. Looks like the AHL's hiatus has killed the league.

The NHL hasn't seen the kind of success they are getting now, after the lockout, in the last 16 to 20 years.

Not the best, by a long shot, but the NHL is doing much, much better than the direction it was headed in...

You mean the attempted-to-be-sold-on-eBay Indiana Firebirds? lol

God though I loved Firebirds games at Conseco.

This paragraph from the story intrigues me:

Tulsa would compete in the higher level of a two-tiered league consisting of previous af2 and AFL franchise, along with possible entries from rival indoor leagues.

Any speculation on the tiers? Is this essentially the end of AF2, but with most teams moving to AF1?

Also, here's an article from the Associated Press, with the same story, plus a little more.

If the quality and demeanor of the phone call was an indication of the professionalism of this league, avoid it now.

Got something for you... here is a list of the initial 16 teams of Arena Football 1, a league formed on September 28, 2009 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to replace the defunct Arena Football League and af2. Some of the teams are from both leagues, plus some other leagues:

Arizona Rattlers (Phoenix, AZ)

Arkansas Twisters (North Little Rock, AK)

Bossier-Shreveport Battle Wings (Bossier City, LA)

Central Valley Coyotes (Fresno, CA)

Chicago (Chicago, IL)

Iowa Barnstormers (Des Moines, IA)

Jacksonville (Jacksonville, FL)

Kentucky Horsemen (Lexington, KT)

Milwaukee Iron (Milwaukee, WI)

Oklahoma City Iron Dawgz (Oklahoma City, OK)

Orlando Predators (Orlando, FL)

Spokane Shock (Spokane, WA)

Tennessee Valley Vipers (Huntsville, AL)

Tri-Cities Fever (Kennewick, WA)

Tulsa Talons (Tulsa, OK)

Utah Valley Thunder (West Valley City, UT)

Hopefully, a total of 24 teams will form the league.

Might this streamlining of the various indoor leagues actually work out to be the best thing? If afl2 is gone and the strongest teams from the other leagues all join together, I think the sport of arena football would be stronger. I am correct in interperting that afl2 will go by the wayside, right?

The af2 is dead.
