Arena Football League 2010

Those cities returning to the AFL fold are a good thing. But one sentence near the end of the halftime 'show' made my stomach churn a little. Essentially, Jerry Kurz said additional expansion was forthcoming soon. That's bad.

Why is it bad?

First, because I personally doubt all 15 teams from 2010 will return. Gate attendance being everything in the AFL, 10,000 seems to be a benchmark for profitability, and there are a few franchises that aren't anywhere close to that number - and won't be. Consequently, I expect those teams to be gone after 2010, 2011 at the latest.

Second, this expansion repeats the cycle that caused the demise of the original league -- over-expanding and, in the process, financing the league's losses with expansion fees. As was the case with the original AFL, eventually, they'll run out of suckers to buy expansion teams at $10M a clip... and as soon as they do, they'd be dead.

Mac, I think it's important to take into account a couple of things. First, it was my understanding that several ownership groups intentionally sat out this reboot, while they explored the prospects of starting their own league. It appears they've realized those prospects were slim and none, and seem to be coming into the fold of this (allegedly) more fiscally responsible league. Second, I recall that sometime around the initial rebirth, the heads of the new league expressed a desire to establish a two-tiered system. For 2010, I think the plan was to just scrounge together whatever teams were left standing to make a playable league. For the long-term, a split back to major and second/third-tier markets would appear to be the plan to get everyone operating within their means as much as possible.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

The group that sat out, with the exception of the Sabercats ownership group, has stayed out, or at least the principals behind them have. It's my understanding that the Philadelphia and Kansas City "reboots" are under new majority owners, with only San Jose's principal owner returning to head up a resurrected club.

I would've thought the two-tier system had been abandoned, but you may be right... and if you are, that's an even sorrier notion unless it's handled very, very carefully.

It'll be interesting to see what teams from 2010 return. If it's all 15, great. But if it's a repeat of the original AFL's revolving door of franchise relocations and disbandments (if "disbandments" is a word), it'll be same ol', same ol', which spells death long-term.

Rumored Moves

Looks like the Georgia Force and New Orleans VooDoo are coming back. This time through moves, the Bossier-Shreveport Battlewings and the Alabama Vipers are both moving, Wings to NO and Vipers are rumored to be going to Gwinnett to become the Force.

The two teams with the lowest attendance in the league are moving, a good sign.

Looks like a done deal with Oklahoma City moving to Seattle(Insert NBA-AFL Joke Here), and Bossier to Nashville

So we're going to have Seattle intruding in on Spokane and Bossier going to Nashville instead of NOLA?

I assume the Seattle team is playing in Kent, right?

I wouldn't be so sure of that, Kent's arena is only 6,500 seats which seems very small by AFL standrds (the smallest arena this past season was Alabama's Von Braun Center, which is no defunct.

The KeyArena could work, it would be an awkward setup, but do-able.

From what I read from the team would be playing at Key Arena in Seattle
