2011 MLB Season Thread

Twins have scored 86 runs on the year. How they've won anything with that rotation is beyond me.

So the Sox are 10.5 back of first on May 4th. Do you just chalk it up to the cold spring and feel confident that the balls will fly when the weather heats up, or is it Heads On Pikes time?

So...um...is the NL Central really that bad this season? I can think of no other explanation for the Cardinals being in 1st.

Pythagoreanally (is this a word?) speaking, St. Louis is underachieving. They've been running the same smoke and mirrors show with mostly good results for years now, so I'm not terribly surprised that they're back in first. The real shock is that the Astros are less than five games out.

Well, I want heads to roll, but the coaching staff will chalk it up to a cold Spring. In fact, that is one of the hitting coach's favorite excuses. While other teams routinely take walks and force the White Sox pitching to make mistakes in cold whether, the White Sox offense is rendered impotent by the cold. They swing at the first pitch just so they can get back into the dugout to play Gameboy on the bench. I think my favorite excuse of all is that they are trying too hard.

So it sounds like Jose Reyes may be leaving New York with the Giants, as San Francisco is pushing hard to trade for him. As long as the Giants don't trade Belt or Baumgarner for him, and this could be great move.

While Reyes is more than likely an upgrade over Tejada at this point, I've always found him to be overrated. He's got above average speed and average everything else. Maybe it's because I don't see a whole lot of the Mets, but I don't get why he's considered an elite shortstop.

It's now past 2:30am ET, and the Red Sox-Angels game is still going strong (3-3 in the 13th). Isn't there a limit as to how late MLB games can go into the night?

:censored:, Dice-K had to blow it. If I could have picked one game against the Angels to win out of the whole season, it would have been this one. It was awesome watching the fans who stayed. I wish I was there.

And you west coasters only had to "stay up" until 11:45. Psh!

Is Jose Reyes the same player he was back in '06-'08, no he's not. But I would still rank him as one of the games best at that position. Steals a ton of bases (leading the NL in steals), good fielder, some power, doesen't strikeout a ton, but the thing I like the most about him is that he doesen't do anything stupid on the field. He'll lead the league in triples, but you'll never see him getting thrown out at third base.

He understands his role on the team and the limitations of his ability and gets the most of out them. You have Jose Reyes on your team, you do not need to go out and look for an upgrade at shortstop.

The phillies played a DH in 1993 in which the second game didn't start until after midnight and ended in extras at 4:41 AM.

At this point, Stephen Hawking would be an upgrade over Tejada. He's the worst all around big leaguer I've ever seen play, especially for a former MVP. I generally don't buy that bunk about steroids making you such a better player, but it seems to me if there is one guy who's entire successful career was a direct result of roids, it's him. The Giants need to tie his worthless ass to a tree and pull the trigger on his career.

I don't how many people have been paying attention, but Jon Broxton picked up right where he left off last year, meaning he's back to being in full scale implosion mode just about everytime he takes the hill. The 123 inning he had against the Cubs was the first time he had done that since the second game of the year against San Francisco. By compairison Mariano Rivera has already done it seven times this year.

ERA of 5.68, WHIP of 1.895, already has two losses on the year and we are barely out of Apri. Just about a 1:1 ratio for strikeouts to walks.

I get that from '06-'09 he was one of the best relivers in the game, but when do you just say enough already? If your biggest fear is who's going to replace him, just look at his numbers. How on earth can you do any worse that what you already have now?

From what I gather from a Twins fan watching tonight's Red Sox/Twins game, Joe West still sucks at umpiring and at life.

The Mitchy-poo game? Ah yes, Mitch Williams talks about that all the time. Mitch,"How can you tell the man that you hate the name? It's Harry Kalas!"

So Cliff Lee K's 16 in 7 innings and still loses as Derek Lowe almost throws a no hitter in the same game. While this was going on, In St. Louis Jamie Garcia took a perfect game into the 8th. Good pitching all around tonight.

And what does Lowe get for his great pitching performance? A chorus of boos from the Philly crowd as he leaves. What a surprise.

The story was that the players all called him Mitchie Poo, and Kalas hung with the players all the time, but it was one of those "private" team-things and he just got caught up in the moment and said it after that GW hit. When Kalas died, Mitch told some great stories about how he got ribbed for quite a while after that.

Yes, because anywhere else they would have cheered a guy who just dismantled their team. Give it a rest - if a guy gets it broken up in the 9th and gets taken out, he gets appreciative cheers. Not in the 7th. I was there, and booed when he got removed - but I was booing the Phillies for not showing up and hanging Cliff Lee out to dry. They've scored 1 run for him in his last 3 games. He strikes out 16 in 7 innings, and gets nothing for it.
