Red Sox and Cubs to Wear 1918 Throwbacks This Saturday

I'm not expecting a modern uniform for a throwback night. But a completely plain jersey/hat combo would just look hideous on the field in my opinion.

Maybe (though I suspect a plain uniform is just too plain to be "hideous," per se), but lots of one-off throwback nights are hideous. I think the novelty of going completely name/number/everythingless for one night would've made for a memorable game, which is what you'd like a throwback game to be. The perfect example is the telecast of the Braves/Cubs 1948 game. They did a few innings in B/W with circa-'48 camera work. It was nuts! I couldn't see the game like I was used to seeing it, the angles were all weird, the picture was bad, it was not an optimal viewing occasion, but it sure as hell was cool for [part of] one day. Perhaps they could've been creative in communicating who was in the bullpen and so forth with big placards or something. They could've made it work, had some fun with it.

This. Exactly this.

It would really suck if they authentic jerseys and hats for the Boston throwback set are being sold around the same price that the other authentic throwbacks are being sold. Whoever buys them are getting royally screwed due to the fact that they are essentially paying a lot of money for a black jersey and hat.

I can't believe Majestic actually used unmatched numerals on the backs of these jerseys! The 3 has 45 degree angles at the inner corners and the 2 has 90 degree squared edges. I've only seen this done on their horrible replica jerseys. The Sox should have used their traditional font in plain red and Cubs should have had their standard number style in dark blue. That would have been a major improvement.

Not to mention the numbers themselves should be a good 3-4 inches higher and be closer to neckline.

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Not the first time they have done that. They did that when Rice used Majestic uniforms.

How did I miss this game? I had no idea they did this back in 2008, I would have loved to have seen this game.

I too wish the Redsox went with no numbers on the back. It would have made for a more authentic look. Also I think it would have been cool if the game was broadcast in black and white or at least an inning or two, to give the fans at home a throwback broadcast feel as well. i didnt know the Cubs did that in 08. Looks cool. Overall i love when teams have these throwback games, if a team did it once a year i think it would be cool

I really loved the Cubs uniforms, the socks were weird with the very top being black and the bottom white, it looked like pulled up football player socks.

They looked white to me.

I kind of liked the red sox throwbacks because everyone was wearing high socks and it was red and white, what the Red Sox colors should be.

But the Cubs set was one of the coolest uniforms I have ever seen, from the socks, to the jersey to the hat it was awesome.

Seriously? Or am I missing the irony in your post?

I know it's really plain, but I absolutely love the Red Sox look. Cubs look nice, too.
