...and the bastardized form of the same streetball I can watch for free at the nearest playground is so befitting of a league that supposedly features the best athletes the sport has to offer.

I'd never make a claim that college players are more skilled than in the NBA, but at least college teams actually play like... y'know... teams.

The NBA does have the best athletes - that's why they go for the crowd-pleasing dunks, threes, and crossovers instead of boring technical fundamentals. Excitement is an important part of sports, too.

And as long as we're making straw man arguments, I think I've seen high school teams play better than Butler and UConn's performance in the NCAA title game.

Last year's Mavericks, Nuggets, Thunder, and Grizzlies... the "We Believe" Warriors... the '06 Clippers... the '04 Pistons... there's plenty of NBA teams that play like teams in any given year.

You're the one who assumed "playing like a team" was code for "fundamentals." I think the Showtime Lakers were the epitome of what team ball should be... the way they ran fast breaks was pure poetry in motion... but they damn sure weren't fundamental.

More often than not in today's NBA, cohesive teams can get beat by teams that have one stud player who's capable of carrying his teammates (i.e. Kobe's Lakers). To me, that's boring and goes against everything a sport like basketball should be about.

I guess I have to go back to not watching Sportscenter. Whatever. NBC Sports Talk on versus is so much better anyways.

This. I enjoyed our time of generic, ho-hum dunks not reigning over two-thirds of the Top 10.

I guess I'll watch the Lakers' Christmas game like I've always done, then give a damn in April. I just have never been able to get into mid-season basketball, no matter the circumstances. I like the NBA, but just when it matters.

I know this might sound like just the same old puckhead rant to the hoops nuts, but whatever. It almost seemed like ESPN and the big media were resigned to the fact that there was going to be no NBA so they were giving the NHL it's due. It was getting more and more coverage (because they needed something to fill time) and came to a head with Crosby's explosive return. Seemed like we were almost turning a corner. Well now we're back to the status quo... dunk, dunk, dunk, dunk, dunk...

Bad example. The brief period of time when Kobe was the only star on the team were pretty lean years for the Lakers. In fact, there really hasn't been a team that has ridden one player to a championship - the Sixers back in '01 came the closest, and they lost.

If that Sheridan article is correct, the players (inexplicably to me) caved.

It's not surprising to me, at all. The owners have had the upper hand throughout the entire process. If anyone was going to cave (and eventually someone was going to), it was going to be the players.

The season will start Christmas Day, which is where it should start EVERY season, since no one cares about the NBA until Christmastime anyway.

You must not be a real NBA fan. I care about the NBA all year long...

College Hoops > NBA

You're in the wrong thread.

Watching Paint Dry > NBA

FYP

I'm a bit disappointed. It would've been nice to not have to put up seeing basketball highlights all season, but it's better for everyone else who actually enjoys basketball.

Plus, this is a good sign for Sacramento as well. If they can get a new arena and keep the Kings my dislike for the NBA will most likely turn around.

They better keep that Mavs-Heat Christmas Day matchup. Talk about trolling

Now granted, I do prefer college hoops over the NBA for a variety of reasons (and thank you everybody for not using the "NCAA IS GOOD OLD WHITE GUYS LIKE REDICK AND JIMMER WHILE THE NBA'S FULL OF THUGZZ" argument. That's probably the stupidest thing that comes out of NCAAB/NHL vs. NBA debates), but after the storylines of last season's playoffs, I'll be looking forward to seeing how this season's postseason will shake out. Thanks to the lockout ending, we'll be back to that. Personally, I want some more of the "good against evil" theater that last year had with everybody going up against the Heat

My advice is to stop watching ESPN, if you have the means. Since I got DirecTV this year with NBATV, MLB Network, NFL Network and NHL Network, I get to watch whatever sport I feel like when *I* want to, not when ESPN dictates. And there are more highlights and less PTI imitations. And they move on, rather than dwell on TO, LeBron, Tebow, -- and quite honestly, minute-by-minute minor-injury updates for a weekly football league, etc. My frustration level has gone down immensely since I went ESPN-free. (Except for live games.) I enjoy sports a lot more.

I totally disagree. I don't believe in going to the NBA season thread to bash the NBA, but this is about the end of the lockout (and our responses to it), and the primary reaction nationally is "meh." And mine is mixed, but I was looking forward to more coverage of the college season, particularly after the NFL*. But ultimately, I don't want the NBA to die over this. The regular season is fairly boring, but come playoff time, it's a pretty decent distraction.

*During the NFL season, I'd rather see Hawks/Hornets highlights than hear even MORE about Harbaugh vs. Harbaugh, so it's a mixed bag...

Sports media is virtually infinite at present, yet people are bitching that this "takes away" from NHL coverage. If you thought the absence of the NBA was going to make NHL fans out of people, you made a pretty big miscalc.

Kinda like your UConn-Butler game assessment being the norm for college basketball.

The NBA lockout served its purpose for me....I got to spend Thanksgiving with family instead of having to work at the game. I'm not a big fan of the NBA product, but I can tolerate it for 4 months.

I wonder how this 66-game schedule will be set up....16 division games (4 vs. everyone in your division) and 25 home-and-homes vs the other teams?
