There's a difference between hating modern looks and hating some of the cluttered, fill-tool Edge garbage. This is a great example of how to look modern and good:

This is a bad way:

Hell, this is about the worst way:

I just find the whole lighting design switch ironic. Every day people around here complain about teams that use/used black. Call it unnecessary and throw out the dumb BFBS stuff. Not only that there was nonstop complaining about the new modern edge-design jerseys. THEN, the lighting eliminated black, when to traditional striping and everyone throws a temper tantrum. Another reason to hate Nike.

This just reminds me that the Avs should've never darkened their red. That looks spectacular.

Which brings up an annoying bit of inconsistency with sports teams in general; some celebrate anniversary seasons, and some celebrate anniversary years.

For instance, the Bucs celebrated 30 seasons in Tampa in 2005 (as a team that began play in 1976). Conversely, the Lightning are celebrating 20 years in Tampa this year (as a team formed in 1991-92). It's not the best example, thanks to the lockout, but it does immediately come to mind.

EDIT: Should say 1992-93. Still, celebrating 20 years in 2012-13.

This has always been an issue. I say the most important thing is that a team stays consistent. If you celebrate your 10th season, then don't turn around and celebrate a 15th anniversary. Of course the lost season screws this up a bit.

I remember the Blues in their pregame used to say, "For 37 years Blues fans have supported the team with pride and enthusiasm, now in our 38th season we thank you for your support and ask you to make some noise tonight!" They haven't used this line since the 04-05 lockout.

"I did absolutely nothing and it was everything I thought it could be." -Peter Gibbons

I wouldn't consider the Avs old look as modern. I've been an Avs fan since they moved to Denver and by the time the edge change came around I had grown tired of the zig-zags. They too could benefit from the removal of black in the uniforms. Maybe it was modern in the 90s, but now It's outdated much like the old Stars jerseys.

I don't know, I feel like the black helmets and pants create some important contrast in the Avalanche's look. Maybe if someone Photoshopped the Avs in maroon or blue helmets and shells, I might be surprised by it, but I'm picturing that look in my mind and it's just not working for me.

the avs were an excellent example of going with a modern look that looks good and has an iconic look. the stars 'star' jerseys to a lesser extent did this as well.

Disagree on the darker red being a mistake. Maybe I'm just partial to maroon and deep burgundy and so forth, but see the guy on the far right there? That's like the right shade of burgundy to my eye.

I don't understand why the Stars are doing all of the anniversary stuff this year. They're a season early. 93-94 was their first in Dallas.

This is their 20th year in Dallas. Would be their 20th season if not the 04-05 lockout. But in terms of anniversaries, this is the 20th year.

Which brings up an annoying bit of inconsistency with sports teams in general; some celebrate anniversary seasons, and some celebrate anniversary years.

I know I was surprised when I saw the Star/20 logo on their ice on twitter, because the (Mighty) Ducks, as well as the Panthers, were established that year too. And after being at Ducks practice yesterday and looking everywhere else, it looks like the Ducks are waiting on their 20th season rather than 20th year. Nothing from the Panthers either, so it would look like a 20th season thing for them as well.

The Ducks celebrated their 10 year anniversary ("A Mighty Decade" banner and all, ugh) in 2002-03. So they're going from years to seasons now.

God damn it. Thanks, Lockouts.

Anaheim began play in 1993-94. 2002-03 would've been their 10th season, and not their 10th year (that would've been 2003-04). Due to the lockouts, however, 2013-14 will be both their 20th year in the league, and 20th season as well.

No?

93/94, 94/95, 95/96, 96/97, 97/98, 98/99, 99/00, 00/01, 01/02, 02/03 = 10 seasons

1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 = 10 years (2003, 11 years)

Since then,

03/04, 04/05, 05/06, 06/07, 07/08, 08/09, 09/10, 10/11, 11/12, 12/13 = 9 seasons

2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 = 10 years

So 2012 is their 20th year. 2013/14 is their 20th season

So disheartening when a team gets their look absolutely spot on the first time and destroys it with updates that are completely unnecessary. With just 2 tweaks the Avs went from one of the best looking teams in the league to one of the worst.

The old Avs uniforms were almost there, but I didn't like the way the black pants looked with the white jerseys. The current uniform has the same problem.

From the front where you can't see the black numbers on the back, they look like a mite team that just bought the standard issue black pants in the pro shop.

I would've loved if they darkened their blue and wore blue pans and helmets. They have one too many colors.

The same could be said for the jerseys being worn by the fans in the background... although the return of red for the Panthers and the removal of the Bettman (?) stripes last year went a long way to fixing the mistakes of the past 10 years or so.

Exactly. Florida is still some ugly business. No hem stripes, no white to break things up, no piping along the sleeve stripes. The current look is just as much a step backward from their initial Edge atrocities as it is forward.

I liked blue as a base color more than red, but apparently red has undeniable marketing powers. Undeniable marketing powers, by the way, are brought to you by Macy's.
