Burkle is out of ownership & arena.... Looks like a "whale" got away....

http://www.sacbee.co...ding-arena.html

Apparently it was for some strange "conflict of interest" issue which frankly seems odd considering AEG was in the same position last year and no one batted an eye. That said it's not good news for Sac, but it's not really bad news either. Burkle (whom the Maloofs reportedly hated) is out and has been replaced by the Jacobs family (founders and current CEO of Qualcomm). So they traded a big whale for a group of bigger whales. And Burkle will still be involved in the ancillary development around the arena so he's not a total loss either.

But couldn't it be perceived as bad to swap partners after a bid has been submitted, after Johnson touted his greatness at the state of the city meeting, and days before a vote? The timing just seems odd.

From what KJ is saying the NBA was appraised of the new guy Friedman at the meeting on 4/3. So this wasn't a surprise to them apparently.

Malloofed again....

http://www.sacbee.com/2013/04/10/5332154/source-maloof-family-sets-deadline.html#storylink

The Maloof family has given the Sacramento investors seeking to buy the Kings until 5 p.m. Friday to submit a written, binding "back-up" offer that matches the deal the family has in place to sell the franchise to a group in Seattle, a source close to the deal told The Bee today.

The source told the Bee that if the Maloofs receive a matching offer by Friday, they will consider it as a serious back-up proposal should the NBA nullify their tentative deal with Seattle. If the offer doesn't arrive, or doesn't match the Seattle bid, the Maloofs have said any talks are off with the Sacramento group.

Actually this is the first time the Maloofs have openly acknowledged there is even an offer from Sac. If Sac brings the goods the Maloofs have now pigeonholed themselves into a situation where the league can deny Seattle with no fear that the Maloofs would hang on to the team. Granted the onus is on Sac to match, which according to a few sources they may have in fact already done, but once they do the league has a much easier route to keeping the team in Sac. The Maloofs may have Maloofed themselves thinking they were being clever.

Wow things have become even more whacky overnight. Last night Chris Daniels from Seattle reported that apparently there is a rift that has opened up in the NBA. Some of the owners are pushing for Seattle. Stern and presumably other owners are pushing for Sac (and Stern may have not only been hand holding Sacramento through their process but actually assisting in their efforts). Then this morning the league put in a request to the Sacramento group to "make Hansen whole" in the event that the league votes against Seattle (ie: Sacramento's new group pays Hansen back the $30 million non-refundable deposit that Hansen paid to the Maloofs). Presumably this would be done to forestall any anti-trust liability on the league's part for denying Hansen the Kings.

All of which frankly looks very good for Sacramento if they comply and pay the $30 mil. It gives the league a very easy out in denying Hansen. And with Stern orchestrating it all behind the scenes (because in the end I can't imagine the owners going against the guy they always listen to and who has made them hundreds of millions over a 30 year career) it's starting to look very much like this is Sacramento's game to lose now, not Seattle's.

Well, all Sacramento needs is 8 owners in their corner, and for them to stay there, and Seattle doesn't get the Kings no matter what deal the Maloofs and the other parties agree to. Unlike the NFL, the NBA's relocation policies have never even been challenged, let alone defeated, in a court of law... and that won't happen here no matter the outcome.

With all the money that's going into keeping the Kings in place, you have to think they're going to start being run to win. You can't drop half a billion on a small-market team and just keep plodding on the way they have been.

The Maloofs didn't really care about the team the last few years, and Petrie made several bad moves as well. I can't wait to see what will happen with the new owners, GM, and coaches.

The NBA doesn't really need a 32nd city. As someone previously said, they've operated at odd numbers for long periods of time. In baseball, it prevents daily matchups, in the NFL it creates extra bye weeks. In the NBA, the only effect is "unfair" divisions. In a league in which something like seven franchises have won all but 2-3 titles since 1980, "competitive balance" is not in their dictionary.
