Pretty much. That said, I think it's a bit too idealistic the way we're thinking. Germany isn't just gonna play along with the US's little game because, hey, why not. I imagine they'll be gunning for the three points.

I have a feeling that this will be the case as well.

I can easily see Germany beating the US 2-0 then Ghana beating Portugal 1-0 to knock us out for the 3rd straight WC.

Muller got hurt at the end of the Ghana game, Klose isn't getting any younger, and a draw gets them the exact same outcome as a win. There are advantages to playing for a draw.

EDIT-also, we're less of a threat in the knockout round than Portugal and potentially Ghana.

Since I can't stand this horrible sport, I've found it's more enjoyable to vicariously experience through twitter. I can tell when the opposition scores because it's a lot of silence and bitching. When USA scores it's caps for about 80 tweets with various takes on 'MURIKA. Cool that they're winning, though.

Just like hockey, except the pace is three times slower and the game clock is pulled out of some guy's ass.

This might be a minority opinion, but I have no ethical problem US and Germany Thursday kicking the ball back and forth for 90 minutes to get a 0-0 draw.

I have no problem with that either. As bad as the ending was for the Americans, the Portuguese have themselves to blame to even get behind and needed a desperate goal for a draw. It would, once again be another disappointing major tournament for Portugal.

World Cup 1982 in Spain, Germany and Austria both needed a draw to advance. All they did was just pass it around with few efforts on goal. Have a sneaky feeling it will happen again.

Who also advance with a draw...

Hmmm....

This is what I was thinking earlier. Worst comes to worst, just hope Portugal beats Ghana because the USA isn't losing their +5 goal difference relative to Portugal.

So we go full turtle and appeal to the Germans' self interest? How does one go about rigging a draw?

EDIT, no, seriously, is there anything in the rules of soccer that forbid slightly tapping the ball to kick off and then have both teams literally sit on their asses for the half?

I forget the year, but West Germany and Austria played a game where both would advance with either a one or two goal win for the Germans. After the Germans got their first goal, both teams basically didn't try the whole game, much to the displeasure of Algeria, who were eliminated as a result.

I think I connected the dots.

I think the USA is still in great shape, we just cant get blown out and need for Portugal to beat or tie Ghana. Portugal's goal differential is still very bad.

Ghana's our real issue, not Portugal. Again, goal differential.

Now, if Germany won yesterday, we'd be feeling differently about this tie

We'd be even more happy, yes...

Here's the key:

Germany and the U.S. would both move on to the knockouts if they tie their game against each other on Thursday. Germany gets the #1 seed from G because of goal differential, while the U.S. gets the #2 seed. What incentive do the Germans really have against the Americans?

If Germany wins, nothing changes. Germany is #1 and U.S. is #2.

If Germany ties, nothing changes. Germany is #1 and U.S. is #2.

If Germany loses, then all hell breaks loose from their point of view.

If both the Americans and Germans were smart, they'd collude with each other to half-ass Thursday's game to send both to the knockouts and rest their players for that phase. But no, a pissed-off German side will probably MOD EDIT on the U.S. because they felt like they derped their Ghana game.

And yes, a nightmare ending to this group would be Ghana winning against Portugal and Germany demolishing America by at least two goals. In that case, Ghana takes the St. Louis Cardinals-route of derping their group games and then sneaking into the knockouts, despite them losing to the heartbroken (and better) team out.

You so-called fans rooting for teams throw a game make me sick. What crap. Where's Herm Edwards? If the Americans can win the game, they should try to win.

I know the World Cup is a special event but at the end of the day it's just a game.

No one here would argue how nice it would have been for the US to take the points tonight and mail in the German game, and I don't disagree. I'd love to have seen the US get their first win when conceding first, handing Portugal their first loss in the same conditions, knocking out a top flight European side, being the first side to clinch in a Group of Death we were picked to finish fourth in and so on. All that would have done is helped us for Thursday, the US program is not at the level yet where it can be ducking competition, the German sides of the world are. Even if we are playing to hold the Germans to a draw these are the games this team will need to have under the belt if they make the knockouts this tournament and have to face the Netherlands, and Argentines of the world, and will need it in 2018 when we are faced with whatever draw we get then. Maybe it is better the US have to earn it against another world power, I think it will actually do the MNT more good in the long run.
