rams80
My answer is there's no silver bullet. "Hurr Durr the academies" might be a long term solution....if we can also make serious culture changes in youth soccer and have people willing to shell out comparatively ludicrous sums of money on something that probably won't have a lot of profit margin. MJWalker45
Looking at all the "major" soccer countries that will be missing the World Cup, we aren't the only ones that need to make changes. The US has been following European style systems of play maybe we need to try a Latin American approach. Tuco Ferretti would be someone I'd suggest as a manager. He lives football and he's hard nosed enough to tell off the big name players in the team. Changes are needed across the federation. Finding opponents that challenges the team's weaknesses will be more important than the easy "signature" wins over B and C teams from Germany. PrimalCookie
I honestly don't know what to think. This is such a blow, to the team, the players, the federation, and the country in general. Wow. Just wow.

DS729
While it's going to be a bit surreal to not see the US (or the Dutch, for that matter) in the World Cup, you can't help but be happy for Panama. Also, FIFA need to give CONMEBOL at least 2 more bid slots. It's ridiculous that Chile or Ecuador can't qualify for the World Cup, yet freaking Saudi Arabia can. A ten nation federation doesn't deserve six spots in a 32 team tournament. In a 48 team draw, they'll get six.

And, on that thought, CONMEBOL had six spots in the previous World Cup. Five of those six got through to the knockout stage, including a team that wouldn't have made the tournament (Uruguay) if Brazil had to qualify. Digby
The academy setup in the United States is already shifting away from the pay-to-play, rich-kids-coached-by-inept-dads model. Whether it's been enough of a shift, we can't say. But, consider the difference in MLS (both at the youth academy level and on the pitch) from 5-10 years ago. And consider how well the current crop of USMNT youngsters have played in youth tournaments, much better than the current cohort (or lack of one) of senior players did in the youth ranks. None of this excuses how poorly both Klinsmann and Arena managed this cycle, nor does it excuse the ineptitude, corruption and nepotism in the federation. This was a perfect storm of garbage at every level and the chickens came home to roost last night.

dfwabel
Bruce Arena: Quote "There's nothing wrong with what we're doing," he said. "Certainly as our league grows, it advances the national team program. We have some good young players come up. "Nothing has to change. To make any kind of crazy changes I think would be foolish. We're building a good system in our professional league. We have players playing abroad of some quality. "There's enough there. There's no excuses for us not qualifying for the World Cup." Sunil Gulati: Quote "You don't make wholesale changes based on the ball being 2 inches wide or 2 inches in," he said, referring to Clint Dempsey's late attempt that hit the post. "So we will look at everything, obviously, all of our programs, both the national team and all the development stuff. But we've got some pieces in place that we think are very good and are coming along."
BlackBolt3
The fact that even with a win last night this cycle would be the least amount of points USMNT has ever scored in the Hex proves that there needs to be change. But then again, I wouldn't expect two men who's heads are under the theoretical guillotine to say anything that might discredit themselves.
