BBTV
I've never understood having to pay for the "privilege" of parking your car at a place you intend to spend money at.TANGENT WARNING:It's the same way with the mall in downtown Sudbury - and I believe that the mall suffers because of this. Many more shoppers in Sudbury visit the larger mall in the north end of the city because they have free parking.I understand the bit about paying a fee if you intend to park at the mall but shop somewhere else downtown, in a way, but the problem with downtown Sudbury is that finding parking downtown is a nightmare just about anywhere except for that mall. I usually go downtown by bus when I need to/want to, but the bus system in Sudbury is, well, that's for another discussion entirely...And don't get me started on hospital parking fees. When you're going to see a potentially dying loved one, how is it fair to be charged a fee every time you have to park your vehicle? All they should do is give you a free parking sticker to hang on your car when you go to the front desk, which would authorize you to be there. If you don't have one because you didn't go in and get it while at the hospital, that should indicate that you are not intending on going into the hospital.Maybe I look at it differently since I live in a city, but parking spots are valuable real estate that has more demand than supply. Also charging for parking encourages use of pt which benefits everybody. I do get that the situation is different in the coyotes case, and in the west / southwest in general. Also - are sports events really that cheap out there, $40 for a cardinals ticket? $5 for dbacks / suns? DG_YouKnowWhatThatMeans
It's been a while, but I paid $5 to see the Reds at Great American. When I moved to Seattle in 2006, my first M's game was $7. Now I think bleacher seats are around $10-11. The D Backs play to a house that's 3/4 of the way empty as it is, so tickets aren't too hard to come by. The Cardinals vary a bit. Tickets to see them play the Chargers this weekend started at around $20. Last week vs Dallas though, tickets started at around $80. Magnus
Charging for parking encourages use of public transit, which benefits everybody. That would be nice in theory, but Sudbury's public transit system is garbage if you need to go out to or come in from the boonies. But that lack of parking spots caused buy the value of the real estate just makes what few spots around very valuable. I lease a spot now for around $300 / month. Deeded spots can range from 100k to 40k depending on location (but are usually tied to condo towers). When I give up my spot in a few days (since I'm moving) I'm pretty sure it will get taken within a day or two. In Phila, the stadiums are kinda in the middle of nowhere, on huge lots of land without other businesses around other than a few warehouses and food distribution centers so I don't know how valuable that land really is, but still the demand / supply ratio calls for it to be priced what it is. PT is pretty easy to and from the games if you live in the city. It's still not bad from the burbs, but a lot of philly burbs people have no idea how to read a transit map or wont arrive to the game in anything other than their oversized gas guzzling Lexus tank. The Giant Pacific Octopus
Also, the White Sox and Cubs have coexisted in the city for 113 years. The Sox had a few ownership scares and "build me a new stadium or I'm leaving" moments, but they have never lacked fan support to the point where they'd have to move. And the situations aren't even comparable. The Lakers were an established, landmark franchise for the NBA, winning bunched of titles when the Clippers came in and said "Hey you guys, go Lakers! But if you can't get tickets to the Forum, come see the NBA stars at a discount here!" The Cubs are certainly a popular team now, but they are not at the level of the Lakers in LA, and the Sox didn't come to the city in the middle of the Cubs being a perenial winner (LOL). Besides, the whole "Chicago is and has always been a Cubs town" thing is a misnomer. Up until 1984, the more popular team was the one who was winning. And the Cubs' bumbling ways are well noted, but the White Sox have made several colossal mistakes that ceded the market to the Cubs and then refused to challenge to take it back.I haven't followed baseball in eons. The_Admiral
Let's hope they get the Panthers or the Winter Olympics. What's the Panthers' lease anyways? The building is owned by Broward County. The master lease is contracted out contingent on the operation of a hockey team. Ergo, the Panthers fill arena dates and lose money while giving the owners the right to have concerts and stuff that make money. All in all, they'd be better off just running concerts and lingerie football and whatever the hell else doesn't have expenses of over $48 million a year, but unlike the situation in Atlanta, where the owners could just dispense of the hockey team without consequence, they're required to have the team there. Liberating the Panthers from their swampy purgatory would thus require the owners of the parent company, a "Sunrise Sports & Entertainment," to want to get out of the arena business altogether and maybe take some penalties from Broward County for breaking the terms of the lease (costs that would no doubt be built into the sale). It's a longshot, but who knows what the future holds? I remember a time when everyone who said it might be Atlanta that True North was circling was told "nope, not a chance! the naming rights require there to be a hockey team!", and well, it's still Philips Arena, isn't it.
