The Pointless Realignment Outpost

I'd contract the Kings and Pacers. Both are weak markets with rock-bottom attendance, so they aren't very profitable for the league. The only thing saving the Nets from my chopping block is the fact that they're moving to Brooklyn and could pick up a following there.

The Pacers were actually relevant here during the Reggie Miller era. Now it's just "OMG THEY SUCK AND THEY'RE ALL THUGS!!!11"

I figured that a East/West format wouldn't be a good idea in the NFL. Oh, well, anyway...

I give you the NFL, had the Colts, Cardinals, Rams, and Oilers not moved to Indianapolis, Phoenix, St. Louis, and Nashville respectively. (More like a "what if" than a realignment, but then again... just a thought)

The admiral issued a challenge to expand Major & Minor League Baseball. Here's mine so far:

MLB

Expansion Teams: Charlotte (AL) & Portland (AL)

AAA

International League

Expansion Teams: Ottawa, ON & Springfield, MA (best I can think of)

Movment: current Charlotte team to Orlando

AA

Texas League

Expansion Teams: El Paso, TX & Wichita, KS

A-Advance

Carolina League

Expansion Teams: Fayatteville, NC & Columbia, SC

A

South Alantic League (even though they shouldn't)

Expansion Teams: Dover, DE & Wimington, NC

Short Season A

Nothwest League

Expansion Teams: Bend, OR & Walla Walla, WA

Rookie

Pioneer League

Expansion Teams: Butte, MT & Logan, UT

That's my idea.

When you guys name what cities your expansion teams would be from, do you actually think about what requirements there are for a top-level team to be successful in a market, or do you just look for cities that have teams in other sports and decide that they should have teams in whatever sport you're reel lining?

If anything, sports need contraction. If a top-level league was starting out today, many cities that have teams (because they've had them forever) wouldn't even be considered. Would the NFL really expand to Indianapolis? Buffalo? I'll even say Pittsburgh? Would MLB expand to... well, half of its cities? If you take away the cost certainty and playing field that a salary cap and revenue sharing allow for, many teams in the NFL might actually have folded or moved by now, and we'd be left with an accurate representation of what the top-level-sports markets are.

I can probably say that I don't, and that my proposals in this thread have been based on what I perceive to be a passion for the sport among the populace in the cities, without a lot of consideration to city/region population base, corporate support, etc.

Hence, I believe that there are 14-16 markets that could still be well served by a top-level hockey team, but I don't know if they have the economic base for it.

I do think that the NHL should contract to a max of 28 teams, with the most obvious one contracted being Phoenix.

As for the other pro leagues, I don't have as strong opinions because I don't watch them as much.

Oh what the hell, I'll respond to The Admiral's challenge as well.

Let's do the following...

Major League Baseball: Portland, Oregon and Sacramento, California

AAA Pacific Coast League: Southern California/Tucson, Arizona and Vancouver, British Columbia

AA Texas League: El Paso, Texas and Wichita, Kansas

A-Adv California League: Los Angeles Area and San Francisco Bay Area

A Midwest League: Duluth, Minnesota and Green Bay, Wisconsin

SSA New York-Penn League: St. Catharines, Ontario and Kitchener, Ontario

Rookie Pioneer League: Walla Walla, Washington and Logan, Utah

Just an idea.

Duluth's a little out of the way (and the local stadium's a bit long in tooth) for the MWL. The Timber Rattlers might also grow a little testy if you plopped a team in Green Bay.

/The Low A teams would almost certainly go to the Sally League anyway.

If you're expanding to Sacramento at the AL level, then you lose the PCL RiverCats and need to account for that, too.

Good points by both of you (and I forgot the Sacto issue).

I'll put the extra AAA team in Calgary. I guess. :P

Hmmm... interesting topics, so why not do what the NFL will look like in 10 years...

National Football League

American Football Conference

Western Division

Denver Broncos

Kansas City Chiefs

Oakland Raiders

San Diego Chargers

Northern Division

Baltimore Ravens

Cincinnati Bengals

Cleveland Browns

Pittsburgh Steelers

Southern Division

Houston Texans

Indianapolis Colts

San Antonio Stars (Expansion team, though one can hope...)

St. Louis Bombers (Perhaps a nod to the Greatest Show On Turf)

Eastern Division

Buffalo Bills

Miami Dolphins

New England Patriots

New York Jets

National Football Conference

Western Division

Los Angeles Rams (The Rams are relocated back to Los Angeles after Ed Roski and his ownership group buy out Stanley Kroenke, who later purchases and then moves the Jacksonville Jaguars to St. Louis)

Phoenix Firebirds (I know, shameless plug...)

San Francisco 49ers

Seattle Seahawks

Northern Division

Chicago Bears

Detroit Lions

Green Bay Packers

Minnesota Vikings

Southern Division

Atlanta Falcons

Carolina Panthers

New Orleans Saints

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Eastern Division

Dallas Cowboys

New York Giants

Philadelphia Eagles

Washington Warriors (The politically correct crowd finally wins, after Daniel Snyder loses ownership of the team to a richer and more left-leaning owner)

As much as people want it to happen, the Redskins are never changing their name, and any new owner that tries to change will likely be branded a socialist/commie/marxist/Nazi by the fans.

NFL in 10 years:

AFC West:

Denver Broncos

Kansas City Chiefs

Los Angeles Avengers

Oakland Raiders

AFC South:

Birmingham Jaguars

Houston Drillers

Indianapolis Colts

Tennessee Titans

NFC West

Arizona Cardinals

Omaha Rams

San Francisco 49ers

Seattle Seahawks

All the other divisions would be the same as right now.
