The Pointless Realignment Outpost

Lee.

Central Division (Big Ten)

Chicago (Illinois/Northwestern)

I've been told repeatedly that Northwestern -- and only Northwestern -- is "Chicago's Big Ten team." Since that can really only be true in a realm such as the "Pointless Realignment Outpost," I thought I'd mention it here for posterity's sake. Carry on.

Besides, the NBA has their own D-League, so if and when the NBADL (NBA Development League) expands to 30 teams, this is what it would look like:

  • Hamilton/Oshawa, ON, Canada (Toronto Raptors)
  • Springfield Armor (New Jersey Nets -- soon to be Brooklyn "insert name here")
  • Trenton, N.J. (Philadelphia 76ers)

Central

  • Erie BayHawks (Cleveland Cavaliers)
  • Fort Wayne Mad Ants (Indiana Pacers)
  • Green Bay/La Crosse/Madison, Wis. (Milwaukee Bucks)

  • Greensboro, N.C. (Charlotte Hornets)
  • Gwinnett County, Ga. (Atlanta Hawks)

  • Broomfield, Colo. (Denver Nuggets)
  • St. Louis, Mo. (Memphis Grizzlies)
  • Sioux Falls Skyforce (Minnesota Timberwolves)

Swap Winnipeg and Colorado. I know you are trying to keep Canada together, but that's a lot of extra travel for Winnipeg. It's like what is happening to Minnesota right now, which is why I wish they were really with Chicago, St. Louis, etc.

The NHL doesn't need divisions when it is conference standings that determine who makes the playoffs.

Add 4 more regular season games, play everyone in your conference 4 times and everyone in the other conference twice.

Western Conference

Anaheim, Calgary, Chicago, Colorado, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Nashville, Phoenix, San Jose, St. Louis, Vancouver.

Eastern Conference

Atlanta, Boston, Buffalo, Carolina, Florida, Montreal, New Jersey, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Ottawa, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Toronto, Washington.

Time for the Ontario Hockey League to pointlessly realign:

OHL NORTHERN CONFERENCE

NORTH

Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Ottawa, Kingston, Belleville

CENTRAL

Peterboro, Barrie, Oshawa, Owen Sound, Brampton

OHL SOUTHERN CONFERENCE

SOUTHEAST

Erie, Missisauga, Guelph, Kitchener, Niagara

SOUTHWEST

Windsor, London, Plymouth, Sarnia, Saginaw

---

Teams play 40 divisional games.

Teams then play the other 15 teams twice each.

The schedule is 70 games long; two more than the current OHL.

At 3 games per weekend, the 2011-12 season would run:

sep 23 24 25 30 (4) 4

oct 1 2 7 8 9 14 15 16 21 22 23 28 29 30 (14) 18

nov 4 5 6 11 12 13 18 19 20 25 26 27 (12) 30

dec 2 3 4 9 10 11 16 17 18 29 30 31 (12) 42

jan 6 7 8 13 14 15 20 21 22 27 28 29 (12) 54

feb 3 4 5 10 11 12 17 18 19 24 25 26 (12) 66

mar 2 3 9 10 (4) 70

(Of course, an entire schedule of 3-game weekends is an unreasonable demand on the players,

so mid-week games would still need to occur, but this serves as a starting point.)

Standings are wins and losses only.

The OHL playoffs take the top 4 teams in each division.

Round 1 is divisional semis, Round 2 is divisional finals,

round 3 is conference finals, Round 4 is OHL finals.

Here's the WHL while I'm at it:

Western Conference:

Prince George, Vancouver, Chilliwack, Kamloops, Kelowna, Kootenay, Everett, Seattle, Spokane, Portland, Tri-City.

Eastern Conference:

As is, minus Kootenay.

Conference opponents 5 times each (50), opposite conference twice each (22).

Top 8 of 11 teams in each conference make WHL playoffs.

QMJHL: Currently looks good to me. Three divisions of 6 for organizational purposes, 16 playoff spots. Nice.

Which is why if the NHL did go back to 28 teams I would love to see them reinstitute the divisional playoff system that the league abandoned in the early 90's. Furthermore what better way to promote some bad blood among rivals then to have to play an additional 8-14 divisional games in the playoffs.

Yeah, after posting that, I kind of realized why the NBA has divisions - a team is guaranteed to play 4 games per season against the teams in its division, hence promoting regional rivalries. I can't really comment on the NHL divisions because I'm not familiar enough with their scheduling and playoff systems.

The reason for divisions is because they get the teams to play the closer by teams more often than the teams further away, which reduces travel time and costs. They also want to promote rivalries. (which has been already stated)

Time for a little MLB re-alignment in honor of the start of the season:

It's pretty similar to my main plan I usually do, except there's no way Ndw Orleans or Nashville get a team. NOLA is in danger of losing their basket all team as it is and Nashville won't build a stadium for their triple-a team or any other level. I usually do Portland and either San Antonio or Cbarlotte, but usually move Colorado to the AL something with KC, Texas and usually the San Antonio franchise. You gotta keep the Cards, Cubs, Reds and Brewers together.

Oddly, I put the Reds in the NL South since the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, although technically a "Midwestern" U.S. city, is part of the "Upland South" subregion, which is in contrast to the "Deep South" subregion. Just my opinion anyway.
