Pretty easy switch, I think. And I have to say, Memphis has a badass stadium.

Memphis is strictly a one major league sport town at best. Not enough wealth and companies around here to support more than one. FedEx and AutoZone already sponsor everything from the bowl game to the golf tournament.

As far as expansion teams for MLB, I think only Portland is realistic. Maybe Charlotte. I still think Montreal could come back in 20 years or so once Bud is gone. Of course they'd need a stadium.

32 teams would make for nice even divisions and not requiring interleague everyday. It might also be a way (the only way) to get rid of the DH. Hey union, we'll add two teams but DH goes away.

I liked when baseball had only four divisions instead of six. But if they were to go back to that, one division in each league would have to have six franchises. But, unlike the 1969-1993 system which only had a LCS, I'd still have a LDS: the weaker wild card would play the higher division winner and the stronger wild card would play the weaker division winner. Both rounds would be best of seven.

The reason I liked the older setup was because it seemed to create better pennant/playoff races.

This might work if they went to 32 teams. 8 team divisions. Division champions plus two wildcards. LDS round best of 7, division champion hosts games 1-2 AND 5-7, giving them a bigger advantage than the wildcards.

I know this has been rehashed about 4 billion times but with the major possibility of Phoenix moving to Quebec City after this season in all likelihood we are going to get

THIS:

EASTERN CONFERENCE

Atlantic - Boston, New Jersey, N.Y. Islanders, N.Y. Rangers, Philadelphia

Northeast - Buffalo, Quebec, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto

Southeast - Carolina, Florida, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, Washington

WESTERN CONFERENCE

Central - Chicago, Columbus, Detroit, Nashville, St. Louis

Northwest - Calgary, Edmonton, Minnesota, Vancouver, Winnipeg

Pacific - Anaheim, Colorado, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Jose

OR THIS:

Northeast - Boston, Buffalo, Montreal, Ottawa, Pittsburgh, Quebec, Toronto

WESTERN CONFERENCE

DETROIT & COLUMBUS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO STAY IN THE WEST FOR NOW

Starting in 2013, MLB re-re-realigns again. Were it to have gone my way, Houston would have not gone to the A.L. I would have moved Colorado instead, and put Houston in the NL West, giving more natural interleague rivalries.

That being said, one thing that makes baseball perfect are its imperfections. So we'll have 2 American League teams in the same state. We have had 2 National League teams in the same state (Pennsylvania) since the 1880s, so there lies a kind of "balance" of sorts.

The NFL has a few alignment issues, which I know people can agree on. I know the NFL likes to keep rivalries in tact, but I think by realigning a few teams to make the division more regional could help teams with travel costs and such. Most of all, I would just like to see a consistent base.

In my changes, I made 3 in the AFC, and 2 in the NFC

I think the biggest change would be the Dallas Cowboys. Obviously they have huge rivalries within the NFC East, but being in the division makes absolutely no sense. The Houston Texans are in the NFC South, as should be the Cowboys. Both Texas teams need to be consistent. This same concept works with the Miami Dolphins. Tampa Bay is in the NFC South, but the Dolphins in the East? Yes, Miami is East, but definitely sits better South, in my eyes. Below you can see more changes. I believe that this makes the divisions regionally better.

What do you all think? What changes would you make?

AFC East

New England Patriots

New York Jets

Buffalo Bills

Baltimore Ravens (moved from North)

AFC North

Cleveland Browns

Pittsburgh Steelers

Indianapolis Colts (moved from South)

Cincinnati Bengals

AFC South

Miami Dolphins (moved from East)

Houston Texans

Tennessee Titans

Jacksonville Jaguars

AFC West

Kansas City Chiefs

San Diego Chargers

Oakland Raiders

Denver Broncos

______________________

NFC East

Philadelphia Eagles

New York Giants

Washington Redskins

Carolina Panthers (moved from South)

NFC North

Green Bay Packers

Chicago Bears

Detroit Lions

Minnesota Vikings

NFC South

New Orleans Saints

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Atlanta Falcons

Dallas Cowboys (moved from East)

NFC West

St. Louis Rams

San Francisco 49ers

Seattle Seahawks

Arizona Cardinals

From a strict geographic sense, I love this. As a football fan since 1974, I'd miss the rivalries. To me, if I were to realign the NFL I would rename the conferences & the divisions too.

AFC renamed the Hunt Conference (For Lamar Hunt, founder of the A.F.L. & Kansas City Chiefs/Dallas Texans)

NFC renamed the Halas Conference (For George S. Halas, founder of the N.F.L. & Chicago Bears)

AFC East - Shula Division - Dolphins, Patriots, Jets, Bills

AFC North - Noll Division - Steelers, Oilers (back to Houston), Browns, Bengals

AFC South - Unitas Division - Colts, Ravens, San Antonio Texans, Jaguars

AFC West - Madden Division - Raiders, Chargers, Broncos, Chiefs

NFC East - Landry Division - Cowboys, Eagles, Redskins, Giants

NFC North - Grant Division - Vikings, Lions, Packers, Bears

NFC South - Thorpe Division - Seahawks, Buccaneers, Panthers, Cardinals

NFC West - Walsh Division - Rams, Saints, Falcons, 49ers

Playoff format stays the same, 6 teams, 4 division winners + 2 wildcards per conference.

Why would Houston be in the North and Baltimore in the South? Their current alignment and rivalries lie in their current divisions. It's rather pointless to make that switch.

Geographically speaking this is the closet I could come up with for a 4 conference league with the NFL.

Conference 1

Arizona Cardinals

Dallas Cowboys

Denver Broncos

Kansas City Chiefs

Oakland Raiders

San Diego Chargers

San Francisco 49ers

Seattle Seahawks

Conference 2

Atlanta Falcons

Houston Texans

Jacksonville Jaguars

Miami Dolphins

New Orleans Saints

St. Louis Rams

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tennessee Titans

Conference 3

Baltimore Ravens

Buffalo Bills

Carolina Panthers

New England Patriots

New York Giants

New York Jets

Philadelphia Eagles

Washington Redskins

Conference 4

Chicago Bears

Cincinnati Bengals

Cleveland Browns

Detroit Lions

Green Bay Packers

Indianapolis Colts

Minnesota Vikings

Pittsburgh Steelers

You add up the distance between teams in conference you wind up with a total mileage of 110171. I'll take suggestions if anyone thinks they can beat that number.

If you're just going off of the NHL realignment scenario, then this does make the most sense. The NFL is actually pretty well set ip geographically for something like this. I know it would never happen because of rivalries and the tradition of te AFC-NFC split, but it is interesting.

You put the Cowboys on the West Coast. That's why this wouldn't happen.

Same idea with the NBA

Conference 1

Atlanta Hawks

Charlotte Bobcats

Chicago Bulls

Indiana Pacers

Miami Heat

Milwaukee Bucks

Orlando Magic

Conference 2

Boston Celtics

Cleveland Cavaliers

Detroit Pistons

New Jersey Nets

New York Knicks

Philadelphia 76ers

Toronto Raptors

Washington Wizards

Conference 3

Dallas Mavericks

Houston Rockets

Memphis Grizzlies

Minnesota Timberwolves

New Orleans Hornets

Oklahoma City Thunder

San Antonio Spurs

Conference 4

Denver Nuggets

Golden State Warriors

LA Clippers

LA Lakers

Phoenix Suns

Portland Trail Blazers

Sacramento Kings

Utah Jazz

I don't think this one works out quite as well as the NFL one does. I'm not a big fan of splitting up the central division but its the best I can do. Total mileage for this would be 97250. Again if anyone thinks they can improve on that number let me know.

For fun I posted this in the NFL thread, if the NFL went the NHL route(in their current standings)

Western Conference

1. SF

2. DEN

3. OAK

4. SEA

5. AZ

6. SD

7. KC

8. STL

Eastern Conference

1. NE

2. NYJ

3. DAL

4. NYG

5. BUF

6. PHI

7. MIA

8. WSH

Southern Conference

1. NO

2. HOU

3. ATL

4. TEN

5. CAR

6. TB

7. JAC

8. IND

Northern Conference

1. GB

2. BAL

3. PIT

4. DET

5. CHI

6. CIN

7. CLE

8. MIN

The 1 seeds would get byes and the 3's would visit the 2's on Wild Card Weekend.

The teams with byes would be: 49ers, Patriots, Saints, Packers.

The opening games would be: Oakland @ Denver, Dallas @ Jets, Falcons @ Texans, and Steelers @ Ravens.

While it wouldn't be as feasible with the NFL, here's what I would do with the schedule: 6 games with the 3 teams that were in your division before, to preserve rivalries.(for example the Niners would play Seattle, Arizona, and St.Louis twice) Then 4 games with the other teams in your new division, but were previously in the other conference(Niners would play Denver, KC, SD, Oakland, and flipping off year after year where they play). 4 more games would be switched off among the 6 other old divisions that would be in the other conferences. The 2 last games would be against the same slot in the other 2 conferences the year before(for example, if the Niners are playing a group in the Eastern conference, they would play the same position teams from the Northern and Southern conferences)

Here is what the Niners schedule would be under this scenario for next year:

Home: Seattle, Arizona, St. Louis, Denver, Kansas City, Dallas, NY Giants, New Orleans

Road: Seattle, Arizona, St. Louis, Oakland, San Diego, Philadelphia, Washington, Green Bay

The year after for them would conceivably be(if rankings are the same):

Home: Seattle, Arizona, St. Louis, Oakland, San Diego, Green Bay, Minnesota, New England

Road: Seattle, Arizona, St. Louis, Denver, Kansas City, Detroit, Chicago, New Orleans

The Packers would be for example:

Home: Minnesota, Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore, Cincinnati, New Orleans, Tampa Bay, San Francisco

Road: Minnesota, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Carolina, New England

The next year for them would be:

Home: Minnesota, Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Arizona, St. Louis, New England

Road: Minnesota, Detroit, Chicago, Baltimore, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Seattle, New Orleans

Okay, I need to smack myself in the head because my first thought after reading DarkJourney's post was: "Because that's where most of the black people live anyway?"

Besides, I totally forgot about Atlanta and Detroit.

Its if the NFL took the NHL conference realignment system, so yes four conferences eight teams. However I lied about the mileage, its actually 115870. (Forgot to include the 49ers)
