2017-18 NCAA Football Thread

Like a lot of the things you post here, Abel, I'm having a hard time trying to decipher just what your point is. Sure I'd take the success that Gene Chizik had at Auburn (I'd also take the All American quarterback who was making six-figures under the table, too. But that's just me). They won a freaking National Championship. Willingham, on the other hand, coached Washington to some of the longest winless streaks vs their in-conference opponents the team had ever had, and topped that off with a winless season where their final loss was to their 1-11 in-state rivals. How are those two situations even remotely comparable?

What are we even talking about at this point?

Point is, the Herm Edwards era already looks like a huge mess, and I don't see it getting any better.

Gary Andersen's recent lack of success in the PAC 12 was very apparent yet you went back a decade to point out Willingham.

Plus, while you are a ASU fan, it's not like anybody took advantage of the four year USC probation period. Cause you f'n didn't!

I really think Arizona State was more worried about looking like they're improving rather than making sure they actually improve. Edward's press conference was horrible. It's like he thought he signed with Arizona instead. The school seems to have brought him in as a GM instead of a coach. I'm certain his presence will bring some decent players in, but the AD placed restrictions on who could come in so he could keep certain assistants who have since decided to leave. Sumlin could have worked so much better and half the league wouldn't be showing YouTube videos of him laughing at his own team's uniform.

It was just a somewhat similar coaching issue I remember as a kid that popped into my mind, that's all. I think I was like 13 the last time Ty Willingham was a big deal. Why are you making such a weird deal out of this?

In fairness, Ty Willingham at UW kind of made sense at the time. A once-promising coach railroaded out of Notre Dame given a second chance is defensible.

Crazy old man who's been shouting at clouds for a decade at ESPN was always going to be a joke.

Ty Willingham went 13-15 in his last 28 games at Notre Dame. Let's not act like his firing was some great injustice.

Apparently, Florida State shouldn't be bowl eligible.  Their win over Delaware State doesn't meet requirements necessary to count towards bowl eligibility.

Reddit user bakonydraco did an in-depth dive into Florida State's bowl eligibility. Thanks to a makeup game against Louisiana-Monroe, the Seminoles got their sixth win of the season, which would generally give them a bid for a bowl.

However, one of those few wins was against FCS Delaware State. According to the NCAA rulebook, for a win against an FCS opponent to count towards eligibility for a postseason game, the school must have awarded at least 90% of the potential scholarships to players.

I'm not a huge college football guy, but don't coaches generally hope to get to coach the players they recruited? I don't know how many of Willingham's recruits were on the two good Charlie Weis seasons, but it seems like more than a few.

Either way, I'm not holding any candles for Ty Willingham. I was a student at UW during the 0-12 season and it sucked.

To get a better understanding of how fans felt about Graham’s dismissal and Edwards’ hire, azcentral sports made a public-records request for correspondence Crow and Anderson received from fans during the week of change.

This request produced more than 1,000 pages of emails. It also produced two obvious conclusions: An overwhelming majority of fans who emailed the ASU leaders wanted Graham to return for his seventh season. And nearly just as many had a hard time understanding how Edwards – who hasn’t coached in college in nearly three decades – is the right man to lead the Sun Devils to a higher level.

“Are you kidding?” wrote one alum. “He’s 4-2 against UofA. He brought discipline and respect back to a program that was lost and wandering. He owns RichRod. Been going to the games since 1974 and he is the closest thing to (Frank) Kush we’ve seen.”

Quote

Wrote one Valley resident to Crow: “As a huge ASU fan, I ask you to ponder this one simple question: Why would you allow Ray to fire Coach Graham and pay the largest buyout ever to let him hire a former mediocre coach who happens to be a personal friend of his who hasn’t been in the college game for 30-plus years?”

FSU made a statement saying, in essence, that Reddit was wrong because the rule apparently includes academic aid as well as athletic. That’s the first I’ve heard of that, FWIW.

Me too and I wouldn't really care if the the story was true since they'd destroy any FCS team regardless of the scholarship situation. It would just be funny to rib their fans a bit after they rescheduled a game to maintain their streak (and I'm sure extra practice played into it).

Florida's season was equally awful when you consider preseason expectations and it couldn't end soon enough for me.

One thing I know, the Army-San Diego State game was nuts.  West Point couldn't stop that Penny dude...and the Aztecs had trouble stopping Army from bleeding the clock (unless they tried to pass).  I'm not sure I would've gone for two, but it was either that or Penny gets one more shot at gashing the Army D in OT.

Another thing I know, I'd only caught the end of the Tx Tech-USF game, but that end was equally crazy...you got three passes that had equal rights to being game enders...were defense not optional :P

SDSU scored 35 points on just 32 plays from scrimmage and the last two were the last possession. Having a WR throw a pass was basically insane.

Belk Bowl was just another exhibition and kudos to New Mexico State who actually won a bowl game!

Man, what an absolute disaster this bowl season has been for the PAC 12. 1-7 so far and a few downright embarrassing losses to boot. It's no surprise, though. The PAC 12 was down all year to the point where Arizona State, who was GOD AWFUL this season, was clear of the Bowl cutoff by two full games and was in the race for the PAC 12 South until the pentultimate week of conference play.

I love the PAC 12 and always will, but they're getting absolutely boatraced by pretty much every other major conference right now, and there is a smaller conference or two that may actually be stronger top to bottom as well.

It'll all pick up I suppose, as it seems like college football out west fluctuates pretty heavily from year to year as it is (seemingly more so than the other big conferences, anyway). But right now is definitely not the early to mid 2000s.

Happy to see it happen. And they needed to win this one, because it may be a while before they go back to one.
