College athletics identity changes

I'm a State fan and I don't like it. We're supposed to be the antithesis of Ole Miss and the "good ole boy prep school" look the school exudes, and now we're copying their script? C'mon!

I've always wondered why the baseball logo isn't the primary.  First to win a title and iconic in its own right.

That's the baseball team's logo. If they tried to spread the identity across the athletic program, fans would take it as sacrilege.

University of Tennessee wants their colors back too 😆

Well UT-Southern is part of the University of Tennessee system. Has been since 2021.

That said, I like most of that logo package. For some reason I can't put my finger on, the full-body firehawk isn't doing it for me. Other than that, I wish they'd have made the "S-hawk" hybrid the primary. If they were to ever get football or lacrosse, then they could separate the hawk head from the S.

University of Tennessee Southern  rebranded 3 years after their last rebrand, and...UND called and wants their minimalist hawk logo back...

Got to say that having a UT-Southern just seems odd to me.  Tennessee is an East-West state, not a North-South state.  Is there really that much distance between the southern edge of the state and its northern edge?   It's like that old song about "Kids in America" where Kim Wylde sings about Eastern California.  No, Cali is a North-South state, and TN is an East-West state. No need for the U. of Southern Tennessee just like there is no need for the U. of Eastern Vermont.

Depending on where you are in the state, maybe 110 miles or so. So no, not really.

(Of course it can take forever to get from south edge to north edge if you catch Nashville at the wrong time of day...)

New truck stop.. I mean logo for the America East

It's not horrible, but has to be one of the biggest downgrades I've seen in a LONG time.

The previous logo was great and has aged well. It was simple and modern. A and an abstract E placed on the east side of the letterform with color variations to match each member school.

Really would like to know the reasoning for this and I don't want to hear "the schools are by the same highway" BS.

I agree completely.

The conference, in their press release, emphasized "unity, toughness, and unyielding resolve," as well as the fact that they're a tightly-knit league. Oh yeah, and that the schools are on the I-95 corridor...

Phoenix hasn't changed. I feel bad for Yuba students. Lots of schools are going away from their PDW-designed identities, and here is Yuba getting one.

I feel worse for them having to go to school in Yuba City.

On the NAIA front...

The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference is changing their name to the HBCU Athletic Conference - Here's the story.

It makes perfect sense to me since all the conference members are HBCU's. This also includes the incoming members of Stillman, Voorhees and Wilberforce.

School wise, Union College in Kentucky is changing their name to Union Commonwealth University - Here's the story for this one

And yet, and this is amazing, no pro sports teams called Bulldogs.  Wildcats too (not counting 2020 XFL).  Some of the most common college/HS names are out there:  Eagles, Falcons, Colts, Tigers, Rams, but not Bulldogs, Mustangs, Wildcats.

The only time I can remember a pro team in general having the Bulldog nickname were the former Boston Yanks, who only had the name for the 1949 season.

While I'll agree that the new America East Conference logo isn't a masterpiece, the logo it replaced never struck me as being anything special. Frankly, it looks like something that would be featured in a quiz dubbed "College Conference or Regional Airline?" on Sporcle. It could have been purposefully designed to adorn the vertical stabilizer/tail fin in the livery of a regional carrier.

Supposedly Mississippi State switched from the block M to the State script as the primary back in January.

Mississippi State Bulldogs Logo - Secondary Logo - NCAA Division I (i-m) (NCAA i-m) - Chris Creamer's Sports Logos Page - SportsLogos.Net

While I like the logo, the switch to just "State" reminds me of what Dr. Pepper does with its Fansville ads...
