Don't nightclubs in Miami make you wear something a little nicer than a baseball jersey?

Probably. The whole thing strikes me as trend-chasing without understanding what made the original work/the current circumstances of the franchise.

I watched a Marlins road game last week and was amazed at how drab the road uniforms looked on TV.

I was at Marlins Park today and all the advertisements for the throwback games showed a purple DBacks logo so maybe the DBacks will be wearing throwbacks as well?

The logo was actually an incorrect recoloring. The ad had a teal background so I guess they took liberties to not have a teal A on a teal background but the A was purple with gold and black for the diamond pattern on the left side.

I would love it if the Diamondbacks wore throwbacks too, but I doubt it happens. I recall the Marlins using the 90s Padres logos in their promotions for the 25th anniversary weekend at various points (at the park especially), but the Padres still wore their current uniforms during the games.

That's a missed opportunity in both cases because arguably the Padres and Diamondbacks are among the NL teams that have most noticeable changed their look since the mid 90s. I'd give anything to see a 90s throwback series between the Marlins and Astros next season!

If it’s how you describe then it must have been the logo on the hat on the far left and far right. It was an actual alternate hat in the first few years of the franchise, though rarely worn.

Yeah it was basically like that though I can't remember if the diamond pattern was black or gold, whichever it was the outline was the other color.

Man the DBacks were too heavy on the teal in that first unveiling. Very wise of them to bring the purple to more prominence when they eventually did. The teal cap on the home vest is an awful combo with the purple sleeves.

Also, the home whites were actually cream right? Seems weird for a 1998 expansion team to go with cream. They probably would have looked just as good in regular white. To be honest when they wear those today they look more white than cream to me. Almost like it's a lighter cream than say the Giants use.

The unis in that picture are definitely bright white.

As far as I know, the second iteration of the home set was definitely cream, though they very well could have been white when they first came out. I can’t remember for sure though I have some originals in my closet at home.

I would absolutely love it if the diamondbacks had some road throwbacks prepared for this series. I haven’t seen anything on the internet that indicates this unfortunately. Though, I was at the chase field team shop several times in the spring and noticed an increase in the former ‘D’ road hat (2000-2006) on the shelves being sold. It also had the extra new era stickers and was being marketed as one of the official on field caps with all of their other official caps, including the purple alternate one. This got me thinking that there was a chance of a potential throwback game with these hats being used this year. But this is the only evidence I could find to support my theory.

The D Backs were in white from the very beginning, but I don’t think it lasted that long. They began tweaking a few things here and there almost immediately, and made a few rather significant changes after the first or second season. They ditched the cream hat after only a few games (which I believe was only worn with the cream sleeveless set), changed the stacked original wordmark white home jersey to cream either somewhere after the initial reveal or after the first season (or maybe even mid season in their first year. This is the part that’s confusing to me. The original set was definitely bright white) then eventually replaced it with the cream A jersey, updated the original home purple batting helmets that used the D snake to the A logo, made the D snake the road hat and helmet switching away from the A, and they made the sleeveless alt the home jersey sometime after 1999 or 2000, I believe? At least, it was basically a defacto home jersey during their World Series run.

This is all off the top of my head, but I think I got that all right. The D Backs uniform history is pretty fascinating to me because they made so many subtle changes to their set so early on, and it was during the era literally JUST before sports leagues really tried to crack down on the consistency of team branding. Pretty much every change we’ve seen across the big four (or five, if you wanna include MLS) was rather well documented in comparison after the 1998 MLB expansion teams.

Also, my goodness, that D Backs first set (even with the slight tweaks) was head and shoulders above anything they've ever had. The brick, sand, and black set was terribly boring after only a few years and their current look is nothing short of a total mess.

1. The stacked Diamond Backs Jersey is among the worst to see the field in the past 21 seasons.

2. Solid-white cap should never be worn with pinstriped uniforms.

3. Were players really still wearing their stirrups like that in ‘98? I thought we were entering the solid-sock era by then.

4. The turquoise caps were atrocious. Only really went with the white A jersey, but even then, purple is way better.

5. I forgot that I actually liked that purple jersey. Waaaay better than any of their black alts, and way better than the trash they called an away uniform. Shoulda just worn that with solid-gray pants all season long.

This picture got me thinking of a couple of interesting experiences related to local rec baseball leagues with “Diamondbacks” teams (using official marks), and how the variety of colors and identities (and tweaks) the real Diamondbacks had may have led to some understandable confusion or liberties taken on those rec teams’ looks.

That black jersey Ainge is wearing looks exactly like the jerseys that teams called “Diamondbacks” in my hometown’s youth baseball leagues would wear when I was playing as a kid in the early 2000’s. Same exact wordmark and everything. I find that interesting because jerseys in those leagues were usually the major teams’ primary colors (never white), and the only exceptions I recall were the Mariners teams in teal and Diamondbacks teams in black (wore the black “D” caps, too, instead of the purple ones). Looking back I guess that was just the manufacturer’s assumption/perception of primary colors, I guess? Seems off but I don’t know. It could just also be that they just wanted to do it anyways.

Second thing is my stepdad used to pitch for what they called “The Old Man’s League” in the southern end of Utah Valley, it was a 30-and-over city league just for fun. He played for the same Diamondbacks team for three or four years, and their uniform was a grey vest and pants, black undershirts, black “D” cap, and the “Arizona” script but in turquoise with the white/copper/black outlines + dropshadow instead of purple, and purple was nowhere to be found on the top or pants. I always thought that was interesting, I never knew why or how that happened.

Anyways, sounds like providing uniforms for rec leagues and keeping up with Arizona’s identity must not have been the easiest task!
