The NCAA is forming a working group to consider how its rules can be modified to allow college athletes to be compensated for use of their names, images and likenesses. The NCAA made it clear, however, that the group would not consider anything that could be construed as paying athletes.

FOX seems to be avoiding the SEC on CBS and dissing the Pac-12.

During their upfronts on Monday, they said that their "best game of the week" will air at Noon Eastern/11AM Central.  Lots of 11 AM starts for Oklahoma and Texas this season. Michigan is basically used to the Noon start. We may have empt(-ier) student sections everywhere.

I think we'll see Texas and Oklahoma maybe play 2 games at  most, other than the Red River Rivalry, same for the Big Ten teams. Fox is playing it smart  by making sure they don't have to fight for eyeballs against the likes of Alabama or Texas A&M. The Big XII is used to early starts, it's just usually those games are Kansas and Baylor hosting someone. If kids can get up at 4 in the morning to hang out in Pullman, WA in October they can make an 11 AM kickoff in Manhattan, KS.

NCAA grants 6th year of eligibility to last year's Memphis starting QB, Brady White.

Quote

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- The NCAA has granted Memphis quarterback Brady White a sixth year of eligibility due to several medical issues he dealt with while playing at Arizona State.

Memphis announced the extension Friday.

White started all 14 games last season for Memphis. But he suffered a foot injury in 2016 after playing in three games that wiped out the rest of that season and all of the 2017 season. White, who sat out 2015 as a redshirt, graduated from Arizona State at the end of the 2017 season and enrolled at Memphis in January 2018.

This could also be posted in "The Sports Media Thread", but I'll place it here for it being NCAA football specific.
NFL Network to air 10 C-USA games/year for the next four years.

Quote

Conference USA Commissioner Judy MacLeod and the NFL announced today a new four-year contract for a 10-game package of C-USA football games to be broadcast on NFL Network. The partnership will begin in the 2019 football season with one game each week on Saturday afternoon.

“While exploring new media options for football, NFL Network stood out as an excellent opportunity for national exposure,” said MacLeod. “We look forward to showcasing our conference through their tremendous platform and reach.”

“We are excited to showcase the next generation of NFL athletes to our fans on a weekly basis,” said Hans Schroeder, Chief Operating Officer of NFL Media. “Our fans crave live football, and partnering with Conference USA – a conference which boasts several Hall of Fame players – provides us with an excellent opportunity to do so.”

So no games on BeIn Sports then?

* - Looking it up, BeIn has been kicked off everything but Roku and that means less access than what they already had.

Gotta get those wins up a bit.

Just following the SEC-model.

From The Athletic story, where CFT got its story from:

Quote

USC basically starts every season with 10 games on its slate, nine Pac-12 games and its annual rivalry game with Notre Dame, which means it’s scheduling two additional games per season.

So as the program moves forward, the schedule it wants to establish is this: seven home games in three out of every four seasons and a neutral-site game against a Power 5 school once every four years.

“It doesn’t mean we don’t want to play more Power 5 conference schools,” Lopes said, “but you have to be careful when you do those and sprinkle them throughout because we already have Notre Dame.”

This means you can expect to see fewer home-and-home series pitting USC against Power 5 opponents, going against a recent trend of some major programs (like Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Georgia) scheduling home-and-home affairs with other high-profile schools.

That's pretty pathetic. I thought it was crap when the Big East kicked out Temple because they were horrible at football, but to kick out your best team because they keep winning everything is just worthless. These administrators probably blame millennials for this too.

NFLN will make a play for Mountain West games starting with the 2020 season, per SBJ/SBD.

In other news, Ole Miss AD Ross Bjork will leave Oxford to take the same position at Texas A&M.

And tonight, Art Briles is back coaching high school in a small town in east Texas.

Excuse me while I vomit.

F*** everybody involved with this.

Pete Thamel nails it in five paragraphs...

Quote

High school officials in Mount Vernon hit a trifecta of incompetence, ignorance and arrogance on Friday night. They started by hiring Art Briles, the completely toxic former coach at Baylor to be the football coach at Mount Vernon High School. The same Art Briles who couldn’t find gainful employment in America since 2016, when he was fired in disgrace at Baylor.

Mount Vernon officials stooped even lower by announcing this hiring late Friday afternoon before Memorial Day weekend, an age-old publicity avoidance ploy that reinforced what common sense clearly told them — this is an embarrassing decision that needs to be hidden.

The final salvo in their tour-de-force of overt lack of self awareness came from the public-relations official who allowed this quote from Briles to run in the news release: “You’ll make no bigger impact in this world than when you shape the lives of young people.”

In one artless and tactless swoop, Mount Vernon solidified itself as the new moral basement for high schools around the country. It has willingly brought in Art Briles, who ran a program at Baylor that had a stunning amount of sexual violence tied to its football team. And with it, tiny Mount Vernon has become the latest and most glaring example of how winning trumps ethics and an eternal reminder that the glare of Friday Night Lights can blind adults from acting in the best interest of children.

How bad was Baylor under Briles? One of the lawsuits to come from his tenure — and there were plenty — alleged there were 52 acts of rape, including five gang rapes, during a four-year period while Briles was the coach.
