2019 NHL Country Club (offseason)

What happens in New Jersey, we'll see how it goes.

But as of right now:

The Habs have: Shea Weber

The Predators have: neither Shea Weber nor PK Subban

Tbh, this move is an unexpected turn, in terms of when I look back on that 2016 blockbuster trade.

Can't believe the NHL just decided to not hold a draft at all this year. That's weird.

I was fully resigned to Panarin and Duchene leaving, but then some a$$hole on CBJ reddit says he has it on good accord from a front office member that Panarin has been talked into returning and if he does then Duchene will re-sign as well, which all sounds like a bunch of booolshirt to get upvotes on that hideous website, but I went from zero percent hopes to like 3 percent hopes and that'll be just enough to crush me when he signs with Florida on July 1st.

Excited about the Devils future. PK for a few more years. I don't care if people think he's on the decline, guy is a huge upgrade over what we've had to work with the past few years and the value of what we gave up wasn't much of anything. Also the intangibles and his value to the club off the ice will be a huge boon.

I love Subban, and am really going to miss him. The guy was a Norris finalist two seasons ago, when he led the Preds in points for 3/4 of the season. I don't care what anyone says, I don't think the Preds would have made the Finals in '17 with Weber. Considering an injury year on either side of his Norris one (which was one point shy of a personal best), Subban actually put up decent numbers (his whole Preds stint average puts him at a 50 point season PPG stat). If he's healthy, it's just as likely that he's worth it. That's all before the intangibles. Much like the Preds when they acquired him, the Devils will benefit from him being a media darling. He's a player who gets butts in seats, something the Devils sorely need. They haven't finished higher that 26th in attendance in the past five seasons, and they don't have Winnipeg's excuse of a small, but sold-out arena.

I don't think that the majority of the fans (in Nashville or elsewhere) are racist, but there's a very vocal subsection whose magnitude of hate can't possibly stem from anywhere else. That's easy for others to glom onto when his high-risk/high-reward style gives plenty of negative stats to latch onto. On top of all that, he's a football or basketball-type personality in a sport that generally prefers their superstars to be more stoic.

My biggest criticism of Poile these past few years is that he's seemed too hesitant to spend big on a super-star first-liner (ideally a winger). He's great at finding deals, but it's really hard to find those, with a big name. Subban's 9 mil a year is easily the most obvious place to shed money, especially with how solid the rest of the blue-line is. This trade puts us at three D-men to protect in expansion (Fabbro will still be ELC), and allowing us to protect more guys. This frees up a lot of space crucial to signing a UFA. I absolutely hate not getting as much for Subban as I think we could have, but I'll wait and see what Poile does next. If he can snag Panarin or Duchene (ideally Panarin), I think it'll be worth it. If he doesn't close on them, and pulls in a Nyquist or Lee, I think he winds up looking bad. Not that they're bad additions, but I don't think they justify letting Subban go for so little.

Roberto Luongo retires after 19 seasons. Finishes 3rd all-time in wins.

I'll always remember Luongo for the 2007 Western Conference Semifinals Game 5 when he had to poop just before overtime started, didn't start the overtime, came back, and then in double OT, he tried to complain to the referee about a play 50 feet away from him by waving his glove hand, and then Scott Niedermayer sent this by his glove hand:

Hawks get Andrew Shaw back for a second and a third, seems like a pretty big price for a third-line wing whose game resembles that of a pinball and has already seen him start breaking down. Trade might look better at the close of business tomorrow if equivalent players are signing deals well over $4MM/yr.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Well thats what happens when you spend 11 million for Karlsson and need to sign Meier to a new contract. Apparently, Pavelski and the Sharks weren't even that close to a deal.

Panarin making a lot of money to play for the crappy Rangers. Although the combination of him and Kakko is a nice place to accelerate the rebuild.

Dallas is not where I expected Perry to go considering fans there always seemed to hate his guts more than most. He's 12 games away from 1,000 career games, and Dallas' 12th game? Home vs. Anaheim. How quaint.

Speaking of the Ducks, some spectacular Bob Murray logic already. Buy out Perry and because the Ducks have a logjam at forward, particularly on the wings, with so many young players ready to make the jump. Trade for not useful fourth-liner Nicolas Deslauriers from Montreal. Sign AHL playoff MVP from Charlotte. Murray is almost never active on July 1 or in on the big names, so this isn't a surprise. But he makes a lot of "but... why?" moves, and for an organization trying to change its direction, I see moves like this and say "but... why?"

Have you considered rooting for one of the other California teams? Both of them have championship DVDs you can by so you don't have to worry about them being perpetual losers!

"And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday."
