I wasn't saying that, I was providing some colour to the press releases about theft. The FBI is saying that though, fwiw- https://cde.ucr.cjis.gov/LATEST/webapp/#/pages/explorer/crime/crime-trend If you go down to the rate of property crime, it was 2130.6 per 100,000 people in 2019, and in 2022 (the last year for which they have data) it's 1954.4, which is lower than the 2019 number. All violent crimes did in fact spike in 2020, but the rates for 2019 (380.8 per 100,000) and 2022 (380.7 per 100,000) are functionally identical, and if you scale the chart back to the earliest data they have (1985), the recent years are basically a flat line, since in the early 90's it was in the 700s! This is obviously not what the thread is about though, and I would recommend we not dwell on the idea that Oakland is crime ridden in a thread about baseball in a forum with rules against politics threads.
Red Comet
I wanted to make a stupid pun more than talking about Oakland or some social commentary about a place I never have been nor intend to ever go. Anyways, the Boston Braves were renamed the Boston Bees for a few years and considering that Salt Lake City is emerging as a dark horse candidate, why not bring back that moniker in the Beehive State? LaGrandeOrange
Utah getting an MLB and NHL team in quick succession feels like it'd be too many for such a small market. A lot of these current wave of "Major" league cities feel like they'll reach their tipping points fast.

The_Admiral
Whatever Oakland's problems may be, and they're similar to the many other American cities besieged by feral/antisocial behavior, I still believe there's no better place for them and that the league and union should do everything they can to keep them in the East Bay, up to and including throwing money at the Giants to claw back the "territorial rights" that don't have a right to exist. Here's hoping common sense prevails. "Disband the team for three years," go to hell. 2 Quote ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Digby
The A's managed to play at the Coliseum when Oakland was drowning in crack, and when the Black Panthers and the cops were openly at war across town. I don't think some Denny's parking lot break-ins are really why they're fleeing now.
OnWis97
If I take everything I read at face value, most MLB teams need to flee their urban hellscapes. The Twins, Mariners, Giants, Dodgers, and Cardinals, just to name a few, better get to the suburbs or roll the dice on smaller markets. 2 1 Quote Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse." The Twins literally play in one of the nicest and affluent neighborhoods in Minneapolis, at the corner of North Loop. I have no idea what you mean by urban hellscape. I mean sure, there are not great parts of Minneapolis, but geez 1 Quote "And those who know Your Name put their trust in You, for You, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You." At least the other cities have additional stuff to do in between car jackings and shoplifting flash mobs. Y'know, assuming you're out of the hospital or morgue in time to enjoy them. 2 Quote https://dribbble.com/MakaioCall

If you plan a trip to a ballgame from the suburbs in any city, I'd bet you're a hundred more times more likely to get injured/killed in an automobile collision than at that hands of a criminal. I'm going to SF for a few days in May and will be safer on the BART to the A's game than I would driving from my in-laws place in ex-urban Atlanta to the Ballpark at Cobb County Interchange. 9 Quote Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse." Oakland has some real nasty parts, but it’s still just like any other major American city. I’ve been to Oakland like six times in the past year and it was fine. Fun, actually. Good food scene there if you know where to look, and just as much to do as any other city (probably more weed stores, though). Theres just certain parts of the city you know not to :censored: around in, especially after dark. That’s increasingly true now, but it’s always been the case with Oakland. My dad is from St. Louis and grew up in the government housing projects in an area that was bad when he was young (1940s and 50s), and only got MUCH worse after he left. He took me to St. Louis once as a kid, and even being that young I knew not to ask to see his old neighborhood because you just kinda knew it wasn’t a great spot to be lingering around in. Philly has Kensington, Chicago has parts of the south side, LA has East LA, etc. It doesn’t mean those cities are devoid of any value 9 Quote On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) Digby
Plus bonus rendering of the current Comiskey converted to soccer for the Fire and/or Red Stars. Points for creativity. I don't know that baseball-to-soccer conversions ever quite work. Though this looks better than Atlanta and Arlington if they actually manage to totally demo left-center field.

Portland doesn't count in my book, since it was originally a football field and race track way back in the day. Baseball was the odd fit, if anything -- a literal parking lot of foul territory, and outfield grandstand angles that make Fenway look reasonable by comparison.
