FiddySicks
I’m not entirely sure who to believe here, but one thing I do now know is that this league is already a :censored:show, and I think I’ve lost any interest in it for good. 1 2 Quote On 11/19/2012 at 7:23 PM, oldschoolvikings said: She’s still half convinced “Chris Creamer” is a porn site.) PaleVermilion81
Watching the game tonight. I didn’t watch any games this weekend. Did every game feature the announcer explaining what every play call is? Man it’s annoying. Takes away so much of the suspense of a play being a run, pass, play action, etc. Actually makes it really boring.

Ferdinand Cesarano
Update: all teams look good except Pittsburgh. The helmet logo is indecipherable, and the orange yoke on the purple jersey is unsightly. Still, to have only one clunker in eight teams is good.
Sykotyk
First, football is popular. There's no debate on that. It's a matter of scale. Millions of people watch high school games every weekend in the fall. Yet, you aren't going to get a million people to watch just one high school game. People aren't that interested in watching teams that they're not fans of. Only at the highest levels does 'casual viewing' become a thing. The NFL can have fans tune in for any game because of the 16 every weekend, you're bound to get a good one. Same with the upper echelon of college. Spring football struggles for one overwhelming reason. It's not the same football that you watched. It would be like In-n-Out only selling burgers four months a year, and the rest of the year you just had to a wait. And burger stand after burger stand trying to start up to fill the void. But tastes like shoe leather and only available in 8 cities. You're not going to gain the same fans because it's not the same. What you need to do is adjust your economics to subsist on what you do get. And the last two spring leagues pre-covid that tried, both tried fans in stands as the core driver to grow their leagues. The XFL 2001, and AAF. They failed because travel is expensive. TV crews moving from city to city. Increased number of stadiums to man, staff, etc. USFL is trying to cut out the expenses to be financed entirely by TV. For those complaining about attendance... the tickets were $10 for Sunday, and good for all three games. They're not making money on tickets. At all. In fact, they'd probably do better to just have free admission and have a concessions deal to get a split of profits. Would look better for fans, at least. The big change over the past 20 years since XFL 1.0 is that TV ratings are garbage EXCEPT for live events. XFL 1.0 debuted with a 9.5 rating, which was great, but floundered with a 1.6 rating midway through the season. Today, a 1.6 rating would be popping champaign among executives because live broadcasts are so much better than anything that can be watched on delay. And sports is still the one key 'must watch live' events on TV. It's why there's live plays, reality shows, game shows, etc. Because people are hoping to see something unique as it happens. And sports today is made for TV. USFL is trying to capitalize on it. And with no travel, no stadium deals all over, staffing, etc. It's easy to keep costs down and contained and hope to subsist on TV. And THEN once it grows in support, branch out to the host cities. But apparently, too many are going to be hung up on people they don't even know sitting in a stadium of a game they are watching rather than watching the game. Then again, it's why the NFL papered the Super Bowl two years ago so people idiotically thought it was full because somehow it mattered. 3

Because our chimp brains think the more monkeys are in the stands, the more exciting it has to be. I wish I had a better reason than that.

GDAWG
Pittsburgh is terrible. It may end up being long seasons for two pro football teams with Pittsburgh as part of their name. The only reason the Steelers might be competitive is due to Mike Tomlin, but we'll see how he does without Big Ben.

Yeah, man, they should've just folded the league on the spot. Like, right in the middle of the kickoff. Just have the players toss their helmets into a moving truck right at the 50-yard-line. I'm sure Fox already has the press release drafted, "Well, we gave it a good try, but the good people of Birmingham have convinced us at Fox, after just one week, that our entire long-term TV-focused strategy is a failure. Maybe we'll try again in 30 more years! Good luck XFL!" 1

Aside from having no fans show up to games and a dude who wanted pizza over a salad, USFL 2.0 has been DOA. 1

I don't know what next season's going to look like, but XFL is out for blood: https://www.espn.com/xfl/story/_/id/33765857/xfl-pitches-league-player-agents-attempt-counteract-usfl-source-says Quote The XFL continued its efforts to counterprogram the USFL's return to the field by convening a virtual meeting of agents Monday night to pitch them on the league's plans for 2023 and beyond, a source told ESPN. The XFL's top football executives -- Marc Ross, Doug Whaley and Russ Giglio -- told agents that the XFL would offer higher salaries and better benefits than the USFL. Ross, Whaley and Giglio also suggested that the XFL's season schedule, which will begin in February and end in May, would be more "advantageous" for players who want to get subsequent consideration from NFL teams, according to an internal outline of the meeting obtained by ESPN. USFL players are receiving $4,500 per week in addition to bonuses if their team wins. They also receive subsidized housing during the regular season; The USFL pays $75 toward a daily $150 hotel room rate at the league's one-site location in Birmingham, Alabama. Ross and Whaley told agents that XFL salaries will be higher and will include full housing and meal costs during the season. I thought that media and fan treatment of XFL 1.0 was pretty horrid -- ESPN in particular was rooting for it to fail -- and I think leagues deserve to live or die on their own merit. USFL is beginning from the meageriest of meager beginnings. Hopefully they can turn it around, but right now, the optics are just awful. 3 Quote 1 hour ago, ShutUpLutz! said: and the drunken doodoobags jumping off the tops of SUV's/vans/RV's onto tables because, oh yeah, they are drunken drug abusing doodoobags

It's at least a new wrinkle in the story. The WFL, USFL 1.0, the AAF and both prior XFLs were only competing against themselves. Having two actively trying to compete against each other could be beneficial to both leagues -- each driven to one-up the other, increasing their quality and value along the way. Maybe it eventually forces a merger of the two. Or maybe it bankrupts them both.
