I thought the playoffs had to be in Canton because the stadium wasn't available.

Can anyone confirm that (too lazy to google).

Yes the Championship is in Canton.

Yeah, I dunno about this one. Play is meh, crowds are embarrassingly small, announcing isn’t great. Not quite sure who exactly this one is for.

Unless there’s a huge injection of cash from the networks and they have to hold onto it like the NHL holds on to the Phoenix market, I’m having trouble seeing this one lasting more than a season or two.

I dunno. I’m honestly not sure why they keep having these leagues in the first place. We have quite a bit of evidence showing that spring football  doesn’t have much staying power.

Edit: Aaand now the Tampa Pittsburgh game has been rescheduled for tomorrow. Rough second day.

I guess I just don’t understand how anybody can essentially insinuate  something is bound for failure after such a limited sample size.

You ask why they keep trying these spring leagues? Because there’s enough compelling evidence that it could work that people keep trying to unlock the formula.

So if you ask me, you’re judging the wrong things. Let the string play out on the strategy. Give it the time it needs. And see if the people behind this venture finally unlock the formula.

Suggesting it’s a failure when it’s barely started? That’s just annoying.

The attendance today hasn't been great.

Agreed, but keep in mind there was bad weather causing a delay for the first game and it’s also Easter Sunday. The Saturday night Stallions game looked to have had a decent crowd.

Sorry, I meant confirm that it was in Canton due to stadium issues (not because someone thought it was a good idea).

Yes. Both Protective Stadium and Legion Field are unavailable due to previously scheduled 2022 World Games being held in Birmingham.

I'm willing to give it a shot because it is spring football and the players out there are basically trying to impress NFL scouts with actual game play and the skills they have.

The challenge is simple: Will this be sustainable? The momentum built by the AAF and the XFL before those leagues went under do tell of a precautionary tale of how these spring leagues can fall apart at a minute's notice, whether it was by lack of money or a worldwide pandemic.

Is there compelling evidence that spring football could work long term? We've been chasing the high of the original USFL for decades with diminishing returns. I'm certainly not wishing for failure, but the crown jewel of spring football was a league that lasted three seasons nearly 40 years ago.

I don't think anyone is sitting around thinking spring football, specifically, is a great idea. IMO the thought is probably that the NFL and college football is such a cash cow that there must be some way to take advantage of it with another league. However, those two entities are so entrenched in the fall that a new fall league would be beyond hopeless. Therefore, spring is really your only shot.  So the question isn't really will spring football work ... The question is will any new league work.

In a few months we'll likely see the ratings returns, which I have no doubt will be excellent (by spring blah television standards), and the ad investors will pile on.  They'll take a big loss this year, but if they survive and the revenue comes, it's a done deal.

Yikes. I remember when the AAF got started and DFWable seemed to take it upon himself to make it his mission to cheer for it's quick death.  I see some of you gloomy mopes are applying for a similar position here.

You guys must be fun at parties.

It's sad man, but it seems to be the nature of message boards and forums and comments on the internet. Folks are just way too negative, shout out that nobody cares, etc., yet they bother and take the time to comment on something they declare sucks, or is going to be a failure or nobody cares about.

I'm not even sure why they bother to be honest.

This is where I'm at. People can say what they want, and I'm all for having a healthy dose of skepticism, but sometimes it seems to border on outright cheering for failure, which I find to be unnecessarily cynical and unproductive.

And @Redwolf, you're right. Perhaps "compelling evidence" was the wrong choice of words. But there seems to be a prevailing sentiment that a spring league should work.  And yes, maybe it's all borne from the unfulfilled potential of the original USFL. I'm sure it's not an uncommon lament to wonder what could've been with that league, and it seems like every effort since has taken the USFL model and tweaked it, trying to find which mix of elements will make the most successful formula.

In a way, it's like the holy grail of sports business. More leagues die trying, but the dream is still alive. I find that quest almost more compelling than the games.
