Hearing rumors that Landon Donovans San Diego Loyal will make the move up from USL Championship to MLS in 2024.  Don Garber supposedly has approved it and we are just waiting for an official announcement at this point.

Bill Foley (owner of the Vegas Golden Knights) looked at putting an MLS team in Las Vegas but instead purchased Premier League Club AFC Bournemouth. Building a new stadium in Las Vegas plus the expansion cost in the MLS was too much for him and said Bournemouth was a bargain. I think Las Vegas is a no go at this point and San Diego as a strong yes to be team number 30

I hope that’s true, been impressed by San Diego’s showing in NWSL and the stadium looks nice, even though it’s a college stadium. San Diego has always felt like a more logical market than LV ever did.

Only thing is that I must break from my usual position and, this time, insist that the team change their name upon “promotion.” San Diego Loyal is as dumb as anything we had in 1996.

Normally Id agree with this but, im scared if they change it we'll end up with another FC, SC, United, City

Absolutely amazing that Sac Republic forces out Warren Smith, and the very next team he helps to start ends jumping them for that spot. Karma is a real :censored:, huh? They deserve every ounce of that one.

Time for Sacramento to find a billionaire owner and swoop right back in and take Vegas' spot...

San Diego is a logical choice. Glad that Las Vegas could be out of the running for club #30, however, I wouldn't be surprised if they're club #32 down the road.

Absolutely not. Sacramento had their chance and blew it. Besides, would MLS really need five California-based clubs in the league?

A round robin group stage sounds very fun. Who do I have to cyberbully to get that going?

Garber.

I don't want Las Vegas at 32.  I want one of those spots to go to a first time major league city, like Louisville (MLS is the only shot Louisville has of being a Major League city) and the other in Indianapolis.  But Las Vegas will probably get one of those spots, because it's Las Vegas and they will not stop until they get teams in all five major leagues.

Why wouldn't they? No different than having five teams in the Acela Corridor. Sacramento to San Diego is further away than Foxboro to DC.

Well that is a difference! 😅

Honestly though, Sacramento will inevitably land an expansion club in the coming decade given their U.S. Open Cup run this past year. They're also trying to figure out the finances for building a stadium. Plus, MLS loves giving second chances to their markets, e.g., San Jose Earthquakes 2.0, LAFC, NYCFC, and Inter Miami FC.

I don't think Sacramento should receive a club again at this time.

For the sake of the fans in Sacramento who have been tremendous in supporting their club, I hope you're correct.  But I'm not sure I agree that a MLS Sacramento franchise is an inevitability.

It seems as if the formula for MLS franchises has been cities that are A) in desirable growth markets B ) markets that fill geographic gaps or C ) smaller markets that have shown outsized support for lower-league soccer franchises.

Of those three, I could see A or B being options with the most strategic upside for MLS to keep going back to. In my mind, Sacramento was following the option C path, and once you miss your opportunity, I can't imagine there's abundant demand within league leadership to go back a second time.

I hope I'm wrong, though.
