The capes might be a mistake.  They'll be much easier to tackle with them on.

Counterpoint, hot take, unpopular opinion--call it what you want--but to me, these were the best Lions uniforms:

I saw absolutely nothing wrong with those--well, okay, maybe the teardrop notches were a tadbit much, but the overall number forms were fine--but those accomplished everything the current sets just don't--namely, sharper contrast. Some may hate on the black, but at least in the previous set it was tastefully integrated (as opposed to obviously shoved on as in during Matt Millen's tenure there). It's that second gray that's causing the current set to look rather dingy by comparison from a color perspective (thank Nike for that, but also the Lions for allowing it). And then there's the half-italicized numbers of the current set. It's like Nike tried to split the difference between Roman and oblique and ended up doing neither.

My opinion: their next set should be closer to their previous. I wouldn't be mad if it came back in full. But yeah, that's my opinion--my two rusted Lincolns--and I'm sticking to it.

I'd be perfectly fine if the Lions went with a mix between this set and the throwback, basically a Honolulu blue color swap of Ohio State. It still looks traditional and still retains the Northwestern stripes, the only two requirements I'd have for a redesigned set.

If the Lions just take the stripes and helmet logo of the top picture and put it on the botttom, we'd be cookin':

I honestly can't stand this set, even with only Northwestern stripes. Not sure what it is, could be just the era's jersey materials, or maybe that they wore this set during the 0-16 '07 season. Not a fan of the outline numbers in this case, nor the black facemask or collar striping.

Already made this exact point in another thread. I happen to think the current set still has a lot going for it but I concur in the reading that this set was underrated.

What if the Lions replaced black with the dark grey they use now?

I still feel like that translates as black, even though, after looking at it for a minute, it's obviously not black. But it really took me a few seconds to even register that the color had changed.

Essentially, I don't think it makes a difference if that color is dark grey or black; it doesn't change the over all look of the uniform. It's an additional non-blue dark color added to a color combination that, some years earlier, had only been Honolulu blue, silver, and white. It's a lateral move within the context of that uniform (and the iteration that came before it).

Without striping or logos, it just looks like someone in the Lions equipment department got lazy.

They were replicating the 1935 uniforms of that season. If you want the 1975-2002 (1975-1981 and 1982-2002) uniforms back as an alt, then go message or tweet the Detriot Lions and show a photo of Barry Sanders and say, "Go back to these beauties.' If you like their 1975-2002 uniforms so much.

I think the darker grey works more for the current set as the Lions are using is it more or less like silver.

Primarily, its used on the home jersey to add some contrast between the silver numbers blue jersey. Effectively they've gone for the retro style silver numbers just using the different shade of grey to add some distinction.

Here the dark grey is used as a true tertiary color rather than a tuned version of the secondary color.

I've truly never understood why people think these are so great.

With all of the over-designed garbage out there, these are a breath of fresh air. If they were to wear a relatively simple helmet design with these, they would be great. They’re similar to the Raiders, of course, but there’s something to be said for simplicity and just letting the team colors speak for themselves.
