Lightning working on sale with value close to $2B

From what I'm understanding, the move is to expand the ownership group now but keep Vinik in operational control for for the next several years.  The rumored buyer is believed to be Doug Ostrover, co-founder and CEO of Blue Owl Capital, a very successful investment firm.

Vinik purchased the Lightning for $170 million in 2010.  Not a bad ROI for 14 years later.

Habs get Patrik Laine and a 2nd for Josh Harris. Absolute steal IMO. Very low risk, as Laine only has 2 years left. You get a 2nd rounder as well and only have to give up Harris, who is expendable with our deep defensive prospect pool. If Laine can be even half of what he was previously, this is great.

I mean he's immediately the highest paid player on the team (not counting Price), so there's a degree of risk, even if it's only for 2 seasons. With Slaf and Guhle's new deals kicking in next year there might be a bit of a cap crunch to deal with.

Also, considering the issues Laine has dealt with the last couple of years I'm not sure that playing in arguably the league's most high pressure market is the best thing for him. Just look at what happened with Drouin.

Laine's intro press conference was pretty reassuring and the MSL era has been pretty impressive with regards to getting the best from pretty much all of these types of players (aside from Josh Anderson). We don't need the cap space so we may as well take a chance- considering how well Sean Monahan went, imagine if Laine gets back to being Patrik Laine, and then we have an opportunity to either have an elite player to speed up the rebuild or if we truly can't afford to re-sign him once we're a contender (which should start after this season), he'd have higher trade value than Jordan Harris for him and a 2nd.

It's only a steal if Laine starts to play like his contract suggests, which Montreal took on all of. Getting out from under our bad contracts and scraping the Jarmo off the roster is Waddell's prime directive right now. Losing all 8 million off the books for the next two years is a win for us, getting a player who has Laine's potential is a win for Montreal.

Laine was never a fit with the Jackets and was only acquired in a rushed panic when they had to move Pierre Luc Dubois. Never did much for me as a player or as a franchise centerpiece. Always felt like he was unavailable or underproducing. I wish him luck.

It is pretty wild that among the top 10 picks from the 2016 draft, only Matthews & Keller are still playing for the team that drafted them (although according to league records Keller might be on his 2nd team). 7 of the top 10 are playing for at least their 3rd team.

There is no "might" to it. Utah and Arizona are not the same franchise.

Hopefully it’s false, but there’s a rumor that Johnny Gaudreau may have been in a serious accident. Updates soon, hopefully.

Unfortunately, it's been confirmed.

Worst case scenario.

(from the Athletic's report)

*The Gaudreaus were struck by a suspected drunk driver who decided to try to pass another vehicle, who moved over to the left to pass them on their bicycles, on the right.

*They were back in town for the (now postponed) wedding of their sister, which was scheduled for today.

*Johnny leaves behind two children under 2.
