With Emmit Smith retiring today, Who do you think is the greatest Running Back of all time? There are a number of players you can nominate, there is Walter Payton, Jim Brown, O.J. yes I said O.J Simpson, Emmit Smith, and Barry Sanders, and there are a few others as well. But who do you think is the greatest of all time? My vote goes to Barry Sanders, number #20. Man Retired to early.

this may be a tad off base but I think Earl Campbell woulda been #1 in a world w/o injuries but since it isn't....Jim Brown

You know what, I think you're right. He was a complete monster. Pounded the living hell out of everyone one that tried tackling him. His only problem was longevity, but when you dish out a beating like that every week, injuries are bound to arise.

I voted for Sweetness, no doubt about it. But for number 3 (Brown is 2 in my book), I think there should be some serious mention of Marcus Allen in here somewhere. The man was the first RB ever to have 10,000 yards rushing and 5,000 recieving, played FB for a few years with the Raiders while Bo was there, then was almost completely benched for 3 years because of a feud with Al.

I picked Barry Sanders. Jim Brown is way before my time, but I suspect that based on what I hear, he may be the best. I just picked the best that I've been able to follow.

Barry Sanders, aside from being the most fun player to watch, was the best pure runner of the last couple decades. I know, I know,--he has six playoff games and never ran for 100 yards. He never made a super bowl and he quit too early. Well I think his is the BEST, not the most accomplished or driven. Barry did not want records so he chose not to toil on a perpetually 9-7 team to get them.

Let's compare Barry and Emmit Smith. Emmitt has a few rings, big playoff performances, etc. I'd like to ask an NFL defensive coordinator that coached against both about preparations. My guess is that Detroit was much easier to deal with--stop Barry. With Dallas you had a very good QB, Irvin, Novaceck, Moose blocking for Emmitt. Emmitt was great but he was, to an extent, a product of his system. I wish Barry would have played for a better team and been surrounded by better teammates.
