I do remember Mike Nolan's dad wearing a suit and tie on the sidelines while coaching ... complete with white socks and football shoes. That part REALLY cracked me up. I mean, it was common back then to see coaches in suits and ties, but the white socks and football shoes ...

My personal take is that Nolan should go ahead and wear whatever he wants on the sidelines. Try it once and see just how stiff the NFL will fine him; get the media talking about how ridiculous it is that he's been fined $50K for wearing a suit on the sidelines, etc., etc. Maybe get some widespread exposure for what otherwise will be a moribund 49ers team in 2005.

Dan Reeves wore a dress shirt and tie for at least the first couple of years he was with the Giants (1993-96) and maybe during his whole tenure in NY, which actually began five seasons after Tom Landry was fired.

The NFL should force coaches to wear the same uniform as the players wear. Wouldn't it be great to see Bill Parcells in a Cowboys uni? Same thing for NBA coaches, and hockey coaches will have to wear the uniform and skates too.

Of course I'm kidding, but does the MLB's continued tradition of managers wearing the team uniform still make any sense to anyone?? I still have nightmares of Tommy Lasorda with his beer gut hanging out in that tight uniform.

On the other hand, NBA coaches all wear suits, so why can't NFL coaches do the same?? I wonder why the other leagues haven't forced their coaches to wear brand-name-only apparel?

OK, who wants to work on some concepts of what a 3-piece suit would look like in team colors? (Can you say Seventies?)

Dick MacPherson, former Syracuse coach and the erstwhile Patriots head coach from 1991-92 wore a tie on the sidelines while coaching the Pats...I remember that pretty well.

I think in most jobs, employees and contractors pretty much have to wear what the guy who signs the paychecks tells him to wear. Obviously, part of an NFL coach's huge salary is funded by merchandise sales, so the NFL has made it a requirement for coaches to wear the merchandise on the sidelines.

Nolan asked for an exception to be made, and he was turned down. Nothing more to see here.

By contrast, think about the comments you tend to hear about NFL coaches: Chris Berman mocking Wade Phillips's "leaf-raking sweater", the trashing of Belichick's hoodie. Dan Reeves used to stand out by actually dressing like a professional.

For a league as image-conscious as the NFL, it's curious that they mandate that their coaches look like slobs, because they think it sells.

No one buys a hat because a coach wears it, do they? I know I don't...I've actually AVOIDED hats I've seen on the heads of coaches; who wants to looks like an angry old man?

3-In fact, NBA coaches must keep the jacket/sportcoat on. Jerry Tarkanian was told to keep it on by the league office during his 20+ game tenure with the Spurs. traditionally he tool it off or never wore it on court. Now as for the uniform idea, MLB managers cannot wear khakis, but most look very bad in a uni. George Karl looked bad wearing the Denver throwback too, regardless of what was on underneth. Middle aged men should really not wear unis, period.

Well there are any number of players who look just as bad if not worse then Lasorda in a uniform, John Kruk being a fabulous example.

And as for managers not wearing the teams uni, Art Howe not only wore a full suit, but also a straw hat for a throwback game a few years ago when he was still managing the A's.

I wouldn't see any problem with Nolan wearing a suit. Hell, every other assistant coach on the sidelines is decked out head-to-toe in team logos. It would make sense for head coach to stand-out from everyone else.

I've always believed a man's wardrobe says something about the man's personality. The personalities of NFL head coaches is as much a marketing tool for the NFL as the images created by the players. I'd think allowing a coach to stand-out would be good business.

Art Howe's get-up was a Connie Mack tribute.

Managers in civvies is a neat idea, but you'd hate to see something like Bruce Bochy and his freakishly giant head crammed into a straw boater with a tasteful seersucker outfit that's stained with tobacco juice up to the knees as he goes to change pitchers.

All that hair on his arms needs to breathe while he's on camera.

Believe me, I am not using Chris Berman as my fashion barometer, but when someone who demonstrates so little fashion sense can tool on someone else's clothes (Psst! Wade Phillips, I meant you ), it's not a good sign.
