What WAS the XFL?

Wikipedia is a great resource!!

It is in this case in part because I wrote a fair amount of the article. :D

The most fun I've had with Wikipedia though was when I re-wrote the article they had on the 25th amendment, only to get flamed via e-mail from people who disputed my information.

I retorted in the best way I knew how - I contacted (1) the Senator who wrote the damned amendment in the first place (Birch Bayh, former Indiana Senator ultimately defeated for re-election by Dan Quayle), and (2) Fred Fielding, an attorney who worked closely with the Reagan administration and who advised him on the first implementation of its "Acting President" provisions (and, as a sidenote, someone who until this week was widely believed to be "Deep Throat").

I then forwarded their verifications of the information I had posted to each and every one of those who said I was wrong. It took me weeks to compile everything, but God it felt good.

Editing Wikpedia is a lot of fun. I once editied the description for Sidney, Illions (pcgd's birthplace) by suggesting that there are 25 or so iguanas for every citizen or something like that. A day later the page re-edited to it's original form :D

I saw, I came, I left.

sorry but it was the dumbist thing ever one thing that sticks in my mind is that they had camera men on the field during the game it was just plain STUPID :cursing:

I believe they had players on the field with helmet cams. Didn't the winning team earn more more money than the losing team each week?

I don't remember the helmet cams, but there sure were cameramen on the field. They usually hung around the offensive team's huddle, and stayed 5 or so yards back from the running back.

I didn't see enough games to know if and cameramen (or other broadcast personnel) got in the way of any plays. I don't even remember if the cameras and mikes were wireless, so even the wires had to be somewhat of an obstacle.

Football + Sports Entertainment = XFL

Yeah, it was a bad idea, but I'm kinda glad it happened.  It gave us, of course, He Hate Me and the "coin toss", which we've mentioned already.  The XFL also paid teams so much for winning.  The team would divide the money up between players evenly, except for the kickers who got less than the rest of the team did.  And it was capped off by the Million Dollar Game.

You gotta love that trophy.

Paying the teams for winning was one of the things I liked about the XFL. (The overhead camera and cheerleaders were the others) That trophy reeks of awesomeness :) I would have preferred that trophy to only have the 'X' instead of the other clutter. I wonder where that trophy is right now?

Probably in the XFL Hall of Fame. It's a damn big building.

I really think it's too bad the XFL didn't succeed. And it probably was tanked in part because of the bad press it received.

It had a lot of good ideas (paying the winners more being one, cameras in the lockerroom and all over the field too)

It also was new enough to make bold choices like the Skycam thing which ABC/ESPN has appropriated with out so much as a shout out to the XFL or NBC Sports.

I respect Vince McMahon and the empire he's built. I'm a fan. But I think in retrospect he should've backed off a bit on the attacking of the NFL, the interviews with him and wrestlers during broadcasts, and let the football do the talking while first time viewers were tuning in. I think he already "had" the wrestling audience tuning in and needed to be more delicate and convert the new viewers. Some people may like the parade of scanti-ladies and violence but aren't prepared to "say" they do when the media and their friends are saying...."Booooo" so loudly. A more gentle transition was needed at first and McMahon is so over-the-top, in-your-face and garrish that it turned people off immediately before the football was even on.

NBC was a great network partner to start with......Saturday nights are dead space in spring. Everything was aligned for this to work and it's unfortunate it didn't. Now it's kind of a joke.

Correct. Along with getting a fixed salay around $40,000 per year they also got paid x amount for a win and y amount for a loss.

Sorry I can't remember the exact numbers.

Admittingly, it was ONLY, that one time. It had something to do with the WAFA matchup between my team, Edmonton and pcgd's team, Sidney. What was interesting was that when I first saw the description of Sidney, I found that someone had already made fun of it. Oh and we're gonna get you back pcgd :P

No it tanked becuase it was bad football. It had good raitings in Week 1 and they plummeted fast by week 4 the ratings were in the toliet. People tuned it hatred it and never watched again. I know I stopped wtaching after week 6.

Yeah it wasn't a big deal cause the only info that was on there was somthing about how "gay" my town was but it wasn't as "gay as 'queer central' tolono" or something really stupid like that. He changed it to iquanas and then it was edited back to include nothing but area and population information.

Back to the XFL. Tank nailed it. It had enough innovation to be interesting and different, the problem was you were basically watching good high school teams playing, sometimes not even that. me and my friends bought into the hype early on got tickets to the Chicago Enforcers first home game (which was week 5) before the season started. By the time the game came we decided to get wasted and tailgate instead of enjoy the game.

The weather was awful. It was raining so hard the giant X on the 50 yard line was washing away to reviel the chicago bears C, as well as the endzones. The gameplay was so bad (chicago had negative yards passing in the first half) as the game was between two teams that hadn't even won a game to tha point.

Chicago went on to sweep the rest of the season if I remember right and nearly went to the Million Dollar game.

The XFL is still responsible for my only visit to my beloved Soldier Field.

2) No Fair Catch: Be a man, stand in there, and catch it! This would improve punt return coverage teams.

Brilliant! The CFL should adopt this! Anyone know Tom Wright's email address?

Yeah, good idea... ;)

Winning teams got $2500 per each ACTIVE player. A key there. If you weren't in the lineup no pay. QB's got $5000, and kickers $1500. Losers got $0. There was a small base salary, but that's it.

BTW, the WWE still has all the old XFL uniforms and equipment in their possession. The commercial for the 2003 Survivor Series pay-per-view event featured wrestlers invading a football game being played between the Demons and the Enforcers. Basicallly, it's wrestlers beating up football players.

Funny line at the end though, as they cut to Vince McMahon in the stands: "A wrestling football league?....Nah, it'll never work." :P

They must have had left overs. To my knowledge a Sacramento area high school, ironically named Demons with the same colors, bought the uniforms. Unfortunately, the only thing I can show from my days with the league is the golf shirt and hooded sweatshirt they gave me.

So I'll try the WWE offices and hope and prey they have stuff that they can possibly give me.

They already do have a no fair catch rule.

They know that. It's called sarcasm :)

Hey brennus, I don't understand, you don't know what the XFL is but yet your favorite player is steve largent, hmm.

I kind of think the initial question was pretty valid. Because even to this day i STILL dont think anyone really knows exactly what the XFL was.
