Spurs delete "World Champions" tag

Found this on Yahoo, but you know, I definitely agree with what they're saying. "World Champions" is not the term they want to be using.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - The San Antonio Spurs are no world beaters, by their own admission.

The team has tweaked its new 2005 title banner, which crowns them 'NBA Champions' rather than the league's traditional 'World Champions' designation.

The franchise's other championship banners from 1999 and 2003 have also been changed to reflect the team's place in what has become a global sport.

"(Team officials) have long been leaders in recognizing the international reach of basketball," team spokesman Tom James said.

The Spurs have benefited from that reach. Half the team hails from outside the United States, including starters Tony Parker (France), Manu Ginobili (Argentina) and Rasho Nesterovic (Slovenia).

James conceded that Ginobili and team mate Fabio Uberto, who both played on the gold medal-winning Argentina team at the 2004 Olympics, might better claim the 'world champion' moniker.

"Basketball is now an international game," he said.

NBA rosters include 82 players from outside the U.S.

About time!

How arrogant are we (Americans)?

We didn't even win the Olympics.

The World Series needs to go too.

I agree with the NBA deleting World Champions because there are a lot of very talented basketball leaguesa around the world, but i think World Series fits, especially today. The best players from around the WORLD come to play in the MLB. If you disagree, just look how the Home Run Derby was represented this past year.

Baseball isn't a popular sport around the world. So I think that calling the Final as World Series is OK. But its champion should be called as World Series Champions or MLB Champions but not World Champions.

I think you'd be kidding yourself if you did't think the NBA Champions weren't the best club side in the world.

However this is a smart move for a number of reasons.

1 Basketball has a world championship, the winners of that are the world champions.

2 Its very presumptious to just give yourself the 'World Champions' tag.

3 Basketball is becoming a global game, with increasingly large international support.

If the NBA champ can't use the World Champions moniker, then MLB shouldn't use the World Series...fluff being PC!

The NBA doesn't represent the world, but neither does MLB and baseball is an "International" game too. If you want to use recent Olympic performance as the deciding factor, while the US basketball team displayed a TERRIBLE performance, the US didn't even play baseball in the last olympic games.

And, how many are actually going to favor the US in the World Baseball Classic against the stacked Domincan Republic or Cuban national teams?

I would love to see Maccabi Tel Aviv take on the San Antonio Spurs in a best of 7 series. Any doubts on who would win? You think the Chiba Lotte Marines could fare better against the Chicago White Sox than the Houston Astros did? I don't.

Well, I don't care that they removed it as the Offical name of the Championship is NBA Champions. However if they want to call themselves World Champions that's fine by me. The NBA is the top professional basketball league in the World by far. Therefor their champion is the best professional team in the world thus they can be called World Champions. Same thing for the NFL, MLB, and even the NHL (Although they don't call themselves World Champs they can if they want too). Now if the MLS calls themselves World Champions then I will have a problem. For now any way in the future it might become alright.

I'd rather have championship banners that are specific to the accomplishment, which is why I like this move by the Spurs. The announcers, the fans, the media can use the term "World Champions" if they want, but not on the banner itself.

I saw, I came, I left.
