Quirky HS Nicknames

Representing the AVON LAKE SHOREMEN. Are there any other Shoremen out there? I guarantee there are other Moose out there.

Hmm, I had a good friend from college who went to Avon Lake. Small world. Around WNY, we have the Wilson Lakemen (Wilson is on the shore of Lake Ontario).

There are also the Moorhead High School Spuds in Minnesota, right across the river from Fargo.

Also in North Dakota, I've always liked the Kenmare Honkers. Hettinger, now called the Black Devils, was once called the Gold Bugs. Marion-Montpelier was, for a little while, called the M&Ms. The Munich Magicians and Starkweather Stormkings formed a co-op and became the Magic Storm. New Salem is the Holsteins (there is even a giant holstein cow outside the town on a hill overlooking Interstate 94). There was also the Wahpeton Wops (which was changed to Huskies because of the derogatory term Wops is, plus it's a dumb nickname).

And, as mentioned before somewhere here, there was my home school, the Wing Royals, which began a co-op with our arch-rivals, the Tuttle Trojans, and for a while became ... gulp ... the Royal Trojans.

Actually, it's Grimsley High that goes by the Whirlies. And their logo is a tornado with Grimsley written at the top.

1000% correct. My bad, and I knew better - my ex-girlfriend's entire family went to Grimsley. I was reading something about Dudley earlier, and it was on the brain. Thanks for spotting that.

One more from Jersey I forgot: Woodstown Woodies. They never got too much flack, because they were the juvenile high school (and may still be). It was the one game I wouldn't throw inside very often (I was also a foot shorter and 40 pounds smaller then)...

When I was in junior high, our mascot was the Ponies. We played a school whose nickname was the Kittens (yes, the Kittens). I can still hear the laughter I received when I told my parents that the Ponies were playing the Kittens in basketball.

Wow, those Illinois ones first mentioned...I played against the CornJerkers, the Bunnies and the Pretzels in my HS football career.

The Fisher Junior High was known as the Scotties, you know, the little dog. So once you got through being a Scottie in Junior High, you got to become a Bunny.

The CornJerkers if I remember right had a HA (Hoopston-Area) with "Jerkers" written across it.

As far as the Collinsville Kahoks, they are a ficticous native american tribe. The area has ancient burial mounds all over the place. My mom went there.

My middle school's teams were called the Red Devils; which is a little redundant, since the Great Satan hisself is red and scaly, with a bifurcated tail, and he carries a hayfork.

The school I coach/teach at is the Kenosha Bradford Red Devils (WI)

Can't say for HS, but Washington College in Chestertown, MD (wife's alma mater) calls it men's teams the Shoremen (I think the women's teams are the Shorewomen, to be PC/gender accurate).

Hoopeston Cornjerkers

I had to look that one up, purely out of morbid curiosity....

Mascot's name is Jerky. Go figure.

"I don't need to talk to you, jerky."

OK. Last reply, I promise.

Boiling Springs was the only team Lebanon Catholic beat when I played football there. Sadly, Lebanon Catholic's mascot was the Beavers so we didn't have that much ferocity or anything to boast about.

Would love pics of some of these schools.
