Captain's C Not In Hockey

One thing I've been wondering about recently is quirkiness in using a Captain's C in other sports (namely basketball and baseball.) I really like the tradation of using both the C and A in hockey, but I've been wanting to know what is the significance of using it in these other sports? Why do these sports use them? Has it ever appeared in football? Here's a couple of pictures I've found while looking around, post your own:

j-cut wears (wore) the C for vandy...

and while on the subject, don't ever use google image search for jay cutler pics, unless you're specific enough to add "vanderbilt" to the search as well.

Joe Smith and Michael Redd of the Bucks have been wearing captain C's this year

in the 03-04 season, Desmond Mason wore a C (as did Redd), though last year they didn't use a C

For some reason, it seems to me that the Dallas Cowboys gave their captain a "C" on his shoulder, because I vaguely remember Danny White having one. Maybe a Cowboys fan can verify for me.

On a side note, the Georgia Bulldogs have captain C's as well:

What's the point of captains in football? Wouldn't it always be the quarterback?

While captains in football are often the QB, it may not always be true.

But as to your first question, I'm also having a hard time understanding the point of a captain wearing a "C" in sports outside of hockey. In hockey, I know that the captain has special privileges in addressing the referees (as do the alternates when the captain isn't on the ice). In practice, you see the refs in hockey conferring with the captains all the time--in fact, they conference with the captains as much as they conference with the coaches. The C's and A's help the refs identify who to talk to in a sport in which players always seem to be coming and going because substitutions are on the fly.

In basketball, baseball, and football, the referees interaction with the captains is less pronounced, either by rule or by practice. While the captains do serve important leadership roles in these sports, that role doesn't seem to require use of a "C" to reinforce that leadership role on the team.

about the Cowboys using C's at one time, I have an old Drew Pearson card showing his C clearly. there's that annoying problem with the scanner I have being broken or otherwise I'd use it, but heh.

I know that hockey is not the focus of this thread, but it seemed appropriate enough to display one "C"-related quirk from yesteryear(s) :

As near as I can tell, the Wings were the only team in recent memory (if the 50's and 70's is recent) to have their C's and A's on the other shoulder.

Last year Nebraska introduced a "C" patch for captains, which goes where the "N" patch normally does.

Red Sox captain, Jason Varitek

It really bothers me that the "C" is not the same font as the "RED SOX".

And it looks better on the sleeve.

You're right.
