Team Colors You Want To Come Back

TruColor

Recommended Posts

I've been messin' around with my Team Colors listings on the SSUR, and I got to thinking...what particular colors, or combination of colors do you miss, and would like to see come back?

For me, it isn't waxing nostalgic on particular uniforms, but the move towards retro (for better or for worse) has made some interesting color combinations go by the wayside.

For example, I hated the previous Houston Rockets logo and uniforms (cartoon rocket), but one of the colors in their color scheme was REALLY cool. They had this metallic Blue (they called it "Mercury Blue") that was pretty much just an accent color, but it was very unique:

You have to see this color printed using metallic inks to get a feel for how cool this color was. Kind of a silvery-Light Blue. Actually, according to the Pantone Metallic Formula Guide, it was 12% Blue 072, 48% Process Blue, and 40% 877. It's too bad that the new uniforms couldn't have kept Mercury Blue around...

A lot of guys want to see Royal Blue and Kelly Green back...I agree, although I think what happens is that certain time periods and the current trends and fashions of the day somewhat influence the color choices. The mid-to-late-1970s had Blue and Green come into the picture more and more...it was a relatively unused color combination at the time, and became "hot" during that time period:

Then, in the mid-to-late-1980s, Teal and Purple, Purple and Green, and other related color combinations came to be. Another trend, but as someone else on this board recently pointed out, in a few years kids will be clamoring for those combos to come back. It's a vicious cycle.

Personally, I have to admit that I wanted to put Purple with Teal and Blue and Green years before they became trendy (not sure what that says about me), but I admit that they've run their course.

So sue me - I like funky colors together. I like teams that experiment a bit with the color choices...I don't like standard Navy Blue and Red as a first choice. It's boring in my eyes.

But then again, I's got ISSUES...

:P

I really enjoy the Astros current uniforms and colors but wish they would bring back the metallic gold brim (at least on a BP hat). I think the current BP cap would work well with a metallic gold brim.

I own the navy and gold one, but I purchased it when I was like 12, so it doesn't fit any more unfortunately. IMO Metallic gold looks futuristic and goes well with the Astros identity.

This is the color I'm referring to:

the titans should move navy to an accent color.

and i'd also LOVE to see a brown and gold team. in any sport.

and i think a powder blue and green scheme would look pretty unique.

and the mavs should definately be primarily green.

I think i'm on Pantone's vibe here...

For my money, one of the most beautiful color palates in sports is currently and curiously missing.

My made-up team in Madden is always red jerseys, brown pants. I think it looks good. I don't know if a team has ever used those colors, but maybe one should.

The Harvard Crimson wear crimson (darkish red) jerseys and tan pants. That's the closest thing I can think of to your color scheme (unless Brown goes with the red/brown idea and I'm unaware of it).

looks brown and white to me :(

it's a shame. red/brown make a really funky color scheme... and it's my 2 favorite colors.

I also agree about the Astros...although, I actually prefer the concept that was on this board a while back (can't remember who did it) that used Navy Blue, Orange, and Yellow. More modern, yet a nod to the older uniform set...(without the accompanying nausea)

Yep, powder blue and red is a neat combo that should be used more. For a while, I'm pretty sure that the Sacramento Kings used a powder blue in their unis-- around the Reggie Theus era. And of course, back in the powder blue MLB days, the Cardinals had that look for away games.... Interestingly enough, a local high school (Rummel) uses that color scheme, but has red as the primary (jersey) and powder blue as the accent. That just doesn't work...

In terms of brown and gold, do you mean gold as in "yellow" or "metallic gold"? The only examples that come to mind is Wyoming (Brown & yellow) and the old WLAF San Antonio Riders ( brown & metallic gold). I'm with you on that, brown and yellow would work well for a western team....

Powder blue and green ARE unique. About the closest example I can see is Tulane University, which lists there official colors as "olive green and sky blue". That color description has a lot of potential, but in practice, Tulane fails to deliver. The olive green has over the years been trending darker and darker, becoming more of a forest or pine green rather than a kelly green or olive drab. The "sky blue" is barely there, usually a minuscule accent stripe somewhere on the uniform. Most of the time all you can see is dark green and white. Tulane has even added grey/silver to their print and emblem logos, which throws off their scheme even more.

Anyway, getting back to Pantone's request-- my thoughts on actual team colors I want to come back:

AAA PAcific League New Orleans Zephyrs- One, if not both, of their shades of green and blue need to revert. From kelly green and royal blue they went to pine green and navy blue. For night games, it all looks BLACK.

Mavs-- Back to the kelly green and royal blue.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers-- I like the new logo design, but part of me likes the old orange. I think the Bucs added one too many colors to the scheme with the redux, keeping orange as an accent, keeping and emphasizing red, and adding lots of pewter and some black. Imagine if they had only added ONE color (petwer OR black), and somehow worked to keep orange jerseys-- maybe there's something there.

San Diego Chargers - Powder blue and yellow (but work in navy accents somehow-- maybe use navy to outine the bolts and to present the helmet numbers)

San Diego Padres - Navy and Orange

Edmonton Oilers - Blue and Orange

Mets - back to blue and orange with NO BLACK

Toronto Blue Jays - back to two-tone blue with a little red and NO BLACK (they can keep some graphite)

A's - back to Kelly Green and Gold. I swear on TV last night that forest green looked BLACK.

N.E. Patriots-- back to "regular" red, white and blue.

Philly 76ers -- back to "regular" red, white and blue with no BLACK.

Philadephia Eagles-- back to Kelly Green, and no BLACK.

Pittsburgh Penguins -- back to BLACK and gold (yellow).

(I better go because I'm starting to sound like Dana Carvey as "The Grumpy Old Man" on SNL):

" Back in my day, we didn't have any fancy TEALS and MIDNIGHT GREENS... We had your eight basic colors, just like in a crayon box... That's the way it was AND WE LIKED IT!! We liked it just fine!!"

"Flibbiddee floo!"

It is what it is.
