Sweet! I like it. The Red Sox will make a lot of this money back in the new market that comes with Matsuzaka.

I can't imagine it would be too difficult to come to negotiate his contract. Scott Boras doesn't have his usual leverage because, first, he doesn't have any other teams to drive up the price and also that he has 30 days to work with before he would have to go back and play for a lot less money in Japan.

I can't believe they're doing this...

The Blue Jays are close to signing 39-year-old DH Frank Thomas to a 2-3 year deal.

Story

well Frank will help but there overpaying. Frank Thomas and anyother 39 year old guy is not worth 10 million a year.

Apparently the Rangers were offering $8mil/yr... I guess JP really wanted him, so he outbid the compeition.

Either that or it's the classic case of "overpay the player to get them to play in Canada"

Wow. Good to see Oakland wasnt willing to pay the large amount for a DH. He will be missed, but this REALLY makes me wonder about the possibility of Bonds ending up across the bay.

I don't think Bonds is going anywhere. In my opinion, Oakland (or any other non-San Francisco team for that matter) won't bid on a broken Bonds. Not for the money he will demand. Whenever Bonds falls apart (probably very soon, I have doubts about his ability to play long enough to assault Aaron's record), it'll be in a Giants uniform.

Oh the cruel irony of steroid use. Get a couple of suspicion-clouded glory years and then you fall apart.

ESPN News is reporting that the Padres and Braves have a deal in place that would send Jake Peavy to Atlanta for Marcus Giles, Horacio Ramirez, and a prospect (I think his name is Salty).

Why on earth would the Padres trade Jake Peavy? Unless they know something about his health that we don't know, it would seem bonkers to give up a young ace of his quality. Giles, Ramirez and Saltamacchia are all decent players/prospects, but Peavy's a cornerstone.

I thought Riccardi was a pretty level headed GM, but come on he's spent nearly $130M the last two offseasons on Ryan, Burnett and Thomas. How can that make any sense?

$50M on a closer. Mind you most closers have a shelf life of about 3 maybe 4 years.

$55M on a injury prone starter whose career has been nothing short of a disappointment thus far.

Now as much as $30M on a slow, aging DH, approaching the age of 40, who has been bother by injuries 3 of the last 4 seasons.

Seems like he's digging himself into the same hole he dug the franchise out of a few years back.

My thoughts exactly. There must be some sort of tension between Peavy and everyone else for the Padres to pull a deal like this. I heard rumors of Marcus Giles going to San Diego to be with his brother, especially after they dealt Barfield. I just didn't think it would be for Jake Peavy!

Everything was "level headed" until the team owners gave him a major payroll increase... at that point you might as well spend to give the team a chance to compete in the money crazy AL East (even with all this spending we'll probably be 4th of 5 in the division in terms of player salaries again).

For the record, Thomas wasn't given $30 mil, he was given $18 mil over 2 years... when compared to Sheffield getting $28 mil over the same span it doesn't seem quite as painful.

btw, Thomas signing official

It'll be interesting to see how this deal for the Jays plays out. I hope that Thomas continues to be productive to help Toronto win the division. The AL East is a tough division, but I think they can spoil the New England party. Mr. Riccardi, I hope you know what you're doing.

What I think it'll also do is show the other players out there that Toronto is serious about winning now. It also means that offensively they don't suffer too much if they're forced to trade Vernon Wells if he gets too expensive.

My only concern is that a DH should have been lower on their off-season priorities, but I guess if JP's got a good payroll increase to work with then spend away. $18 million for 2 years is a good price for a guy who can post around 35 HR and 110 RBI. But the age factor comes in... can he do it again?

Pending a physical, SS Alex Gonzalez has signed a 3 year/$15 million deal with the Cincinnati Reds.

Another idiotic move by the Red Sox letting Gonzo go.
