The 1975 Series can be called the All-Red Series (Reds v. Red Sox)

Also, the 1986 series can be called the I-95 series as well.

1986 was called the Shuttle Series.

I remember in last year's NBA playoffs the clippers had already advanced to the second round while the lakers had a two game lead on the Suns. They were making plans for "The Hallway Series" but the Suns came back to win the series over the Lakers and the Hallway series never happened.

I can't remember the name of the Astros-Rangers series, but it's something western. Lone Star Series maybe?

They haven't met in the World Series, mang....

I realize that. I was saying IF they ever met in the series.....

That's not what you said.

Okay...jeez. The Rangers and Astros play a regular season interleague series called something like the "Lone Star Series." Better?

Don't they "name" all these for interleague? Are these MLB creations or Media creations? I never heard the Crosstown Classic until SBC had a contest for it, but I haven't lived in Chicago all that long.

Mets v. Yankees - Subway Series

Cubs v. White Sox - Crosstown Classic, Windy City Series, Red Line Series (I like this one the best)

Angels v. Dodgers - Freeway Series

A's v. Giants - Bay Bridge Series

Rays v. Marlins - Citrus Series

Indians v. Reds - Battle of Ohio, Buckeye Series

Royals v. Cardinals - I-70 Series, Show-Me Series

Orioles v. Nationals - Beltway Series, Battle of the Beltway (my fav), Potomac Series

In 1989 Oakland played San Francisco in the "Bay Bridge Series" or the "The Battle of the Bay".

Actually that World Series was called as the B.A.R.T. Series.

That is for Angelo "Bart" Bartlett Giamatti, former MLB commish passed away few weeks before the World Series and also it was named from the Bay Area Rapid Transit.

I'm sticking with "The Battle of the Bay" based on this.

200px-World_Series_Logo_1989.png

I've even heard the 1944 World Series between the St. Louis Browns and St. Louis Cardinals called the "Streetcar Series", or the "St. Louis Showdown."

Also known as the "All Mound Series". But I never know why was named with that way.

Uh, something about that sounds slightly pornographic...

I don't know whether everyone around the Country did this, but some in Minnesota called the 1987 Series (Twins vs. Cards) the "Riverboat Series" as both towns are on the Mississippi.

I'm from Minnesota and that just sounds desperate. We do that here all the time. Trying to make ourselves sound important when we are just really stuck here in Fly-over Land.

The 1995 Braves-Indians World Series was called the "Politically Incorrect Series" by some....

I rather like that one. I've often joked about starting the Politically Incorrect Fantasy League where every team has to be named after an Indian in some way.

Yea, yea. I know, "Native American".

I remember in last year's NBA playoffs the clippers had already advanced to the second round while the lakers had a two game lead on the Suns. They were making plans for "The Hallway Series" but the Suns came back to win the series over the Lakers and the Hallway series never happened.

Don't you go bringin' no basketball inta one o' my threads, Goddamnit!

And that, my firends, is how you edit a post in a message board. Damn, I'm good.

Meanwhile, still no commonly accepted name for the 1906 Cubs vs. White Sox series, huh?

Orioles v. Nationals - Beltway Series, Battle of the Beltway (my fav), Potomac Series

I've never understood, or liked, either of the first two. Baltimore and Washington both have beltways, but neither road connects the cities. It would be more accurate to call it the Parkway Series or Battle of the Parkway, since the Baltimore-Washington Parkway (Md. Route 295 for most of its length) connects the cities (and ends next to Camden Yards and runs within about 3/4 mile of RFK).

The last one makes even less sense, since Baltimore is not on the Potomac River.

If you want to stick with the train/mass transit theme, you could call it the MARC Series, for the commuter trains that run between the cities. The Camden Line (one of two between Baltimore and Washington) starts on the opposite side of the B&O Warehouse from Camden Yards (i.e., about 50 yards outside the gate).

We now return you to your regularly scheduled discussion of World Series nicknames.

[VOICEOVER] -- "The search continues for a nickname for the 1906 World Series between the mighty Chicago Cubs and their crosstown rivals, the Chicago White Sox -- better known as the Hitless Wonders."

OK, here's what I've dug up.

First, there really seems to be no accepted name for the 1906 World Series. None was applied at the time, probably due to the fact it was only the second World Series ever played and just didn't have the kind of tradition it does now. There also seems to be no name that has really taken over as time has passed either.

Next, there is a book called "When Chicago Ruled Baseball" about that Series and the time it took place. In the review of the book the publisher states "The contest that could be called the Great Streetcar Series would electrify the city of Chicago, and prove to be one of the most unique and exciting World Series ever to be played."

Thier use of "could be" further reinforces my belief that there was not a catchy phrase attached at the time, but that one has never really been assigned as time has passed.

On a personal note, "The Great Streetcar Series" is a stupid name, given other options.

Also, here is a link to an online poll from last spring taken on what the current Interleague Series should be called. Problem with this is they only had two choices and one was stupid as well.

Poll on a name for Interleague Series

pcgd's post above has some good names in it, Crosstown Classic, Windy City Series, Red Line Series, but again, those are for the current Interleague play. Of those, Windy City Series is good, but I think Red Line Series is too much of a Chicago insider name since I don't get it. I assume it's a train line that runs from North to South in Chicago.

I'm a bit surprised that "The Chicago Series" never caught on, since you have the alliteration with "Chicago" and "Series".

"Windy City Series" also has the alliteration going for it and should probably be the name, but having looked around, it seems that when a name is applied to the 1906 Series, which happens with far less frequency than a more recent New York "Subway Series" the name used most is "The Crosstown Series".

Interestingly, waaaaay back in '06, the Cubs not only did not play in Wrigley Field yet, they didn't even play on the North Side, but the West Side in the appropriately named "West Side Grounds", while the White Sox didn't have a "Comiskey Park" yet and also were housed at the equally simply named "Southside Park".

Also known as the "All Mound Series". But I never know why was named with that way.

One of St. Louis's nicknames is Mound City (which is interesting in and of itself seeing as how there is an actual Mound City in the southwestern part of the state - and it got hit by a tornado last night). The nickname comes from the Native American burial mounds which were discovered during the founding and initial expansion of the city from its start as a riverfront trading post. It was a rather common nickname for the city before the construction of the Gateway Arch in the mid 60's. After that point, St. Louis's principal nickname became the Gateway City.

I remember USA Today was calling it the "M & M series" (for Minnesota and Missouri).

I think I remember the 2005 World Series being called "The Greatest World Series of All-Time."

By someone other than Ed Farmer?

I remember the 02 Sries being called like the Wild West Showdown because of both teams being from California and both being Wild Card Teams.

2006 was the Instantly Forgettable World Series.

Not if you speak to any cardinals fans, d*ck.

I hate how everybody says how horrible of a series it was, but the BETTER team won. Obviously the Tigers weren't the better team, they messed up. It just ticks me off how nobody respected the cards winning the series.

Cardinals -- Rams -- Blues -- Tigers -- Liverpool
