Steelers unveil new uniform today.

Okay, seeing this, why can't the Eagles and Steelers both wear their throwbacks when they play each other during the preseason?

A. Only ONE team will be at home.

B. Preseason games are the biggest ripoff in sports, and the majority of fans that go either get their tix for free or buy them from season ticket holders who are forced to pay for the crappy games. So the regular fans won't take part in the "celebration."

C. They'd have to have helmets and uniforms for every player, even though half of them won't be on the team. Seems pretty wasteful.

That would be extremely appropriate, since both teams are celebrating their 75th Anniversary.

Looking at that slide show, all I can say is I continue to lament the disappearing sleeve stripe on all NFL uniforms. Those pictures just confirm that the style is here to stay. It's supposed to be a throwback - does it have to have the "half-stripes"?

There is a slide show up on steelers.com. Looks like it will be white pants with a thin black-gold-black stripe pattern. Socks are black with gold stripes. I like it!

I like the gold-on-black, but wonder how those massive sleeve stripes will look on all the players who don't wear sleeves....

Probably no better or worse than their current massive sleeve stripes.

Stupid faux-back reasoning aside, this uniform actually looks pretty good, which is ultimately all I care about when I'm looking at a uniform.

Hmm. I just also noticed that the 75th anniversary logo has a conspicuous gold outline around the number. Could some tweaks to the regular uniforms also be coming?

Too bad they don't meet in the regular season this year. Also, since Philly's throwbacks are gold, the NFL might OK both teams wearing the throwbacks if they DID meet each other since you could still easily tell them apart. Remember, for a couple of those Thanksgiving games, Dallas wore blue double-stars while the other team wore dark (Broncos throwback orange and Redskins' faux-back Burgundy).

I don't really like these. The helmets look great though. I don't like how on the throwbacks both the eagles and steelers are wearing this year, the jerseys have no white at all, but they are wearing white pants. It just doesn't work. Michigan and the raiders look great with no white in the jerseys, but that is because they wear pants that are a color that IS in the jerseys. That is what bugs me the most about these throwbacks.

Nice, they are wearing them for the opener and on Monday night against Baltimore. Good choices.

I think this looks great and represents a few different eras all at once. I might even be inclined to buy one and i don't even typically buy jerseys at all.

I think mascots for pro teams are dumb but at least they modeled this guy after their original logo.

Dammit. They killed what could have been an awesome look by wearing white pants. <_<

75 years ago, neither team was wearing colored pants, so white would be a decent choice. Most likely, they wore those tan canvas pants the Packers wore with their original throwbacks (navy/gold) a few years back. Fashion and uniform design wasn't what it is today back in the '30s, when people had larger concerns (the Depression and where the next meal was coming from, for starters) than making sure the pants complemented the jerseys. It might not look right, but I can assure you that you'd hear the screams of protest if the Stillers came out in their gold pants with these - "It's not historically accurate!" and so on. Ditto the Eagles; I don't know that they wore white, but I am fairly certain they weren't wearing sky blue or gold pants.

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

That is what I figured was probably the reason, but then I found this:

steelers uniform history

Apparently, this is a mixture of many different periods, so it isn't historically accurate anyways. Those jerseys have actually been worn with yellow/gold pants, and they have been worn with the tan color pants. Later, they had white pants like they will wear with these, but they were with different jerseys. The helmet is also not historically accurate, since the facemask was gray back then. So, since the rest is not historically accurate, and yellow/gold pants were worn with those jerseys, I think it would have looked a lot better with them now.

Well there you go. Thanks for doing all the research on this. Maybe their intent was to represent every uniform the Steelers have worn in 75 seasons? :P

thanks reppact, at first glance i thought they looked pretty accurate but then i came into this thread and everyone was saying how inaccurate they were. yeah the facemask is off but I still think it looks good. I can't tell if the sleeve numbers got moved up to the shoulders or not though.

Ah, thank you. I had forgotten where that site went....

The only thing wrong with that throwback is the black facemask. Otherwise, it's pretty faithful.

Except for those out-of-place white shoes. NO one wore white shoes before the late 1960's.

When these teams bring their throwbacks 'back', I realize why they were dumped in the first place. Most of them are butt-ugly. I think the Lions are the only ones that actually could work today. Of course, they have very little striping on their throwbacks, which most teams have (thankfully) gotten rid of in their current uniforms. A bunch of goofy stripes on jerseys, pants and socks went out of style with the Reagan administration. Just a few (Chiefs and Redskins) haven't realized it yet and still their look is still "in".

I think bucco_b deserves a pat on the back, right? Didn't he "break" this story for us?

At first glance, I thought that jersey was horrific. Now I think it's so ugly that it's good. Consider me pleased. Does it go with yellow or white pants?

Why thank you kind sir; yes I did. I'll take that credit! :D

Try looking here

http://www.weirdwolf.net/FFP/1960s/1960.htm#

Pretty detailed uniform history here.

Plus, 1962 seems pretty spot on.

Pittsburgh62.gif

Let's also not forget that 1962 was the year the Steelers first wore the hypocycloid logo; so I guess going with the 1962 uniform as the 75th anniversary logo has some precedent, using that line of logic. (The switch to black helmets wasn't until the postseason of that year, which also happened to be their winningest season up to that point...how fitting is that???)

I can guarantee you this, though: short of that fugly ann'y logo, those jerseys--which will be on sale here in Pittsburgh probably as soon as August, if not July (by the way, do NOT rule out seeing these in the pre-season; I've already been hearing murmurs of that), will be OFF THE RACKS AS SOON AS THE RETAILERS HANG THEM UP ON THERE. I can also guarantee the authentic versions will retail far north of $200; possibly into $300 territory...and they'll stillbe all bought up.
